What's the difference between the PRESENT PERFECT and the PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS?
In today's lesson, we'll cover the grammar basics -
present perfect: have/has + past participle
present perfect continuous: have/has + been + verb 'ing'
...and we'll look at multiple examples so the differences are clear for you.
Let me know if there are any other tenses you find confusing!

Her information is incorrect. Keep studying! She stated that "Present Perfect" tense describes an action that has began and completed in the past. That is wrong. If I state, "I have gone to the store." that is "Present Perfect" tense, but I have NOT yet returned -- so the action is incomplete at present. The tense can be present perfect but the action could be unfinished or finished.

@Arnel: "I've lived in the UK for over 10 years now" that means you are living in the UK now or you no longer live there? In this sentence you have the word "now" so I can't figure out the meaning.

@@HanHan-wm4oe No, she wrote it correct because "live" is a stative verb and so you can't put it into the present perfect continuous.

I still dont understand: why should i use "have" when i describe the past? I've tried and I tried. Whats the difference? Does anybody can explain it to me?
@sergeymalakhov5578
@sergeymalakhov5578 3 жыл бұрын
I have tried - present perfect "have tried" передаёт связь с настоящим, как будто добавляется "на текущий момент", past simple - действие совершалось или совершилось когда-то в прошлом. I have tried = (на текущий момент) я попытался, I tried = (когда-то в прошлом) я пытался/попытался. Разница в той картинке, которая находится в голове у говорящего - речь о том, что когда-то было или о том, что произошло на текущий момент.

"Does anybody can explain it to me" - "can" является модальным глаголом, он сам образует вопросы. Кроме того, "anybody" в вопросе задаёт особый контекст (как будто спрашивающий и не ожидает ответа) - здесь ситуация этого явно не требует, лучше подходит нейтральное somebody. Я бы переформулировал "Does anybody can explain it to me?" => "Can somebody explain it to me?" или в более вежливой форме "Could somebody explain it to me?"

@@andreys.105 someone и somebody - синонимы (как и anyone/anybody) и в данном контексте означают "кто-нибудь", а anyone/anybody тут звучит скорее как "ну хоть кто-нибудь". В ютубе полно видео, где рассказывают когда использовать какую комбинацию из some/any/no/every + one/body/thing/where

Why the word "prefer" is stative verb? Its do not clear for me. Google translate version: Why is the word "prefer" a verb name? I do not understand this.
@pashu16af
@pashu16af 3 жыл бұрын
"prefer" is about a fact, not about a process. All stative verbs are about facts, and all action verbs are about processes. So "I think" means "I believe" or "I have an opinion" which is a fact and "I'm thinking" means "I'm in a process of thinking (on/about some problem)" which is good too, So as you see some verbs can also be stative and action ones, but their meanings are different in this case. "I think" and "I'm thinking" mean different things. "I prefer" is a fact, "I'm preferring" is "I'm in a process of preferring" which sounds awkward.

Incorrect! You stated that "Present Perfect" tense describes an action that has began and completed in the past. That is wrong. If I state, "I have gone to the store." that is "Present Perfect" tense, but I have NOT yet returned -- so the action is incomplete at present. The tense can be present perfect but the action could be unfinished or finished.
