Yes people, thanks to our friends at FX Rentals, we've managed to get our hands on a lovely pair of vintage Pultec EQP-1A passive equalisers! So we put them up against the budget Klark Teknik EQP-KT... it would be rude not to!
Also, in this video, has James FINALLY come up with an effective way to stop Mark waffling on? Watch to the end to find out!
Thanks again to all who helped make this video possible:

What a treat this channel is! Highly informative, honest and realistic and hilarious. I've two KT units on my mix bus and they do a terrific job. If you pop it open you'll be quite surprised at how good the build quality is. The machined front panel with the stops for the knobs is quite clever. From what I understand, the inductor is not the same as the original for the treble which has 6 real taps as opposed to the 4 on the KT. The KT fudges it a bit with caps and resistors to get all the available choices - same as on the Warm unit. Still insanely good for the money and a little goes a long way.

This sold me on a KT. Dang. It’s not as good as the Pultec, but it completely blew my mind how good the KT sounded. Wow. I’m truly impressed. I don’t have the thousands of dollars to spend on the Pultec, but I can get a KT. Thank you for this video.

Stay FAR AWAY from KT!!! We havve a Tube tech PE-1b and a PE-1c and even though they cost around €3600-3700 it is still not on the pultec eqp-1 level so how would the KT come close for 200ish bucks hahahahaha Even the Puig plug was better than KT. Save the money and if you cant afford a Tube Tech or for ex a AudioScape or ProReplicas which all sound great then buy the $29 plugin before the Klark crap.

Great singing! It’s been my understanding the LF Boost and Atten controls have dramatically different BW. This, in conjunction with a natural rolloff at lowest freqs, results in a musical and complex curve we’ve all been emulating subconsciously using 2 or more bands of parametric EQ for a long time. The Pultec method is ingeniously simple to set by comparison, which is why I love using it. You’’re video production (script, editing) is just mindblowing lately. It is much appreciated.

@@huntergalloway3944 Super happy with my purchase. I use one on the kick for tracking and then use the pair for mastering. I love how subtly you can EQ things with it. Very different than using a plugin parametric EQ which allows much greater increases or cuts. I performed some measurements with it using REW to better understand the EQ curves. There's a slight dip in the upper frequencies. They're very quiet. Being able to twist actual knobs to get the sound you're looking for is a joy! Since then I've purchased a KT-76 that I use on bass and have a 2A-KT on back order that I'll use on guitar.

I've never seen a youtube channel with such an incredible post-production work. Guys, you're sick! Wait, only 1.8k followers, it's an after-effect youtube joke, lol that will go up for sure... Oh and for this video, Klark Teknik is really impressive for the price just like the products from its mother company Behringer that clearly makes sick synths sometimes better than the originals. The klark teknik when very well, on the Rhodes and the vocals the Pultec was better but it's not a huge difference. The Pultec price is about 50 klark teknik. Oh and we don't talk about the waves, waves was ok 20 years ago when we got nothing just coming out from Atari era... Now it's just garbage well-marketed... I think I will get some klark teknik...

Thanks Nelson, we’re glad you enjoy our videos! The KT stuff is great if you’re on a budget. It sounds alright and does the job. There is a market for the cheap stuff, the same as there is definitely a market for the expensive stuff! We definitely recommend getting KT stuff to try hardware if you haven’t before, or even if you just want a selection of kit for not a lot of money.

I love using my EQP-KT. It's on my 'Kick In' channel, in my home drum studio. The recording chain for the channel is : Audix D6 - Alctron MP73X2 - EQP-KT. I upgraded the valve on the KT, and it improved the overall kick tone immediately imo. More punch/body/presence, and no unwelcome murkiness/lack of detail etc..

Great comparison! I have a bunch of the KT (including a pair of EQP-KT's) stuff and like them. The Pultec was a slight bit sweeter than the KT but it is a very minor difference (certainly not worth the difference in cost). I have seen sites that say the KT sounds nothing like a Pultec. It is usually sites trying to sell a mod service. I get it they are trying to sell something, but it definitely is in the ballpark. The plugin sounded very different. I didn't hear that difference as much on the guitar and rhodes samples, but it was still there.

KT looks and sounds like a great mod platform. The top seems to be nice, the bottom lacks the punch you'd expect from a eqp1a but I wouldn't kick it out the rack for that, understanding its performance is key, again I'd be interested in seeing what kind of mods can be done to better balance the tone shape. The KT is practically just the cost of a new chassis, so any tinkering is likely worth a go. Haven't seen the guts of it but that's my initial response to the excellent video. Subscribed ✌️🎶🎶

Love your work guys. Very well done. I do understand the musical approach but when you happen to have not just one but two Pultecs and the KT it would have been fancy to have some measurements and pink noise shenanigans done to see (who listens anyway these days?!?) if there are huge differences. As you mentioned even the pultecs didn't sound exactly alike so it would have been fun to see the individualies of each unit. And yes, kittens for the win. The KT has quite an intrusive distortion smearing the balance and transients from about 1k all the way down. I think I'm leaning towards a pair of the 500-series real deal next(transistorized) , and keep saving up. Just an idea: Although we've heard these files in other viddys of yours, it would have still been very helpful to refer to the recorded bypass at least once for each instrument's part. @@TommyNation That doesn't match what the audio examples in this video showed us. Pultec's were better, but it was almost there and way better than the plugin. Amazing bang for buck.... Also tube swapping might make it much, much closer.....f*** the feel of the knobs....

The Klark is really fast and clean. I understand people could look at the heavy sound of the pulltec, extactly like a Neve vs an API, but, as a Neve owner, my preamp is enought, i prefer the low cost, the transparency of the Klark only :)

@@PresentDayProduction looking forward to the LA2A review, been thinking about getting that! How do you feel about the KT EQ and compressors Vs software? Enough of a difference with the real thing? If you only were buying one hardware EQ or compressor and doing rest in software - what would it be?
@PresentDayProduction
@PresentDayProduction 4 жыл бұрын
jouni helminen I think it depends on workflow really. If you’re working commercially like we are, then speed of workflow and revisions have to be taken into account. It could take half a day to recall a mix when I was working entirely in the analogue domain, today it takes about 11 seconds. As long as you know how to use the tools, either software or hardware, you can get a great recording/mix/master. For the home guy or girl, owning some hardware can really help teach you how a compressor works, how an EQ works. It won’t help you, you just have to learn it. And that can help when you then use software too. We’re just about to do a Q&A video, so I’ll put your question in that. Many thanks Jouni!

For £200 this KT is not bad at all. I wouldn't use it for my master bus tbh, but for single tracks such as kicks, bass, guitars absolutely.

I have the Warm and the KT and I feel the same about the KT. The KT I would not put on my master bus. The Warm I would. The KT is nice to have around for tracking though. But what I am doing is snagging up the used ones from guys that buy it, don't like it, and then are willing to let it go for the terrible offer I make them... lol then I will send them over to Revive Audio and end up with something a bit more useable.

So when using one of these .. if I have double tracked guitars , can I eq freely on the doubles tracked guitars differently? Or will they have to be eq’d at the same settings? I’m thinking of using this on double (or more ) tracked guitars but I wonder if this type of eq will create bad phase issues ? Or not really? For some reason it made me think it could cause the effect of recording a guitar with two mics that are badly placed and canceling out the signal . Would this be a none issue? Thanks!

Nice review. Two things I think you should have done to make it even better are: 1) level match the 3 comparing signals and 2) add a bypassed signal more often to the comparisson.

I have used all this gear and it's really just preference. I love old Tube gear, but it really just gives it a warmer low-fi sound. Their are so many ways to do this for a lot less than the originals. I Klark keep more the a sparkle top end. The original has a smoother distortion curve. In most thick mixes, any one of these options work!

We have had 4 of these units when they first came out.. They are great for the price. What we did not like was the build quality and quality control. It feels very flimsy and the knobs were loose and wiggly. Hope that qc control is better now.

Great vid! I would love to hear comparison of the original to the PSP NobleEQ. I worked on original couple of time and use NobleEQ everyday and love it - but never had a way to compare the two. NobleEQ is not a software clone by no means but I think PSP managed to get the "mojo" right.

The Waves emulation sounded the best in the drums, other than that it sounded ever so slightly less "lively" than the hardware counterparts. Original Pultec seems to have smoother highs, but I think you can adjust the Klark Teknik to sound more similar. I don't hear any benefit of having a tube eq over a solid state. There doesn't seem to be any coloring.. Even order harmonics added. Am I missing something? I am listening on studio monitors. Perhaps it's the ever so slight "liveliness" that is the hardware tubes?

There is a certain loss of absolute clarity in the Waves plugin a bit too warm and thick in the lower mid range and upper bass, the KT is a bit too crisp, but sounds ok, but the clear leader is the original - which is pretty sleek. For those who have the money, just get the original. By the way that vocal lead and background was on the money, interesting vocalist, superbly recorded.

Cool video, thanks for the demo. I finally get a second hand KT Pultec for 150€. I dont know. I tried it on many sources and I found It a bit muddy on the low end and too bright, not pleasant on top. The only way I liked It was on a mono drum room cutting away the harsh of the cymbals. At that point I decided to move the device from CR to live room where I have a little setup for live rehearsals with an old analog makie with JBL speakers and some wedge monitors. I put the KT in insert on a beta57 which I use for vocals. I checked one two (with 0dB pfl Pearl levels) and... Crack!!! I heard an awful noise coming from the speakers and the unit died for 1 minute, then rebirth and died again. Now is filling a 14 rack units that was dangerous swinging because was almost empty... Sad story. But I have to tell that I was more lucky with the 1176KT. Very aggressive on the low end, maybe too much but I liked It. Anyone here had the same trouble? The CRACK thing? Ciao!

It’s kinda funny but I got the kt-2a and instantly thought it was great. I saw your video where you got one and it was faulty. I bought the eq-pt and it was faulty out of the box. I watched a couple reviews bashing it and then came and saw this one. I think the QC is a bigger issue for these new Klark units than anything else. If you get a good one for the money they are a steal. We shouldn’t pretend they are better than other clones though. Are they better than software well maybe but definitely more intuitive to use.
