I just lost one of my favorite Ts and one of the first one I ever got. She’s young, and had a bad molt. I’m terrified but kind of excited to preserve her, she will get a small shadow box with her molt (which is, amazingly, intact) and some of her webbing that I pulled out

I've cast beetles and pinned spiders in resin. I'm trying to learn how to rehydrate spiders I've bought off etsy so I can pin them and put them in resin. I've only done spiny orb weaver spiders in resin so far.

If you do indeed do the resin I will be looking for to it. I recently lost my little gbb. (was a sling) and I am thinking about doing resin with them because I feel like they are probably a bit small to do anything else with. But, they're in my freezer until I'm actually ready.

In real time, I would say the entire thing took about 2 hours and that’s with allowing time for the T’s to thaw out. After thawing it’s pretty quick maybe an hour.

Hey, this was a great video! I'm so sorry for your losses! I also had a death of one of my A. avicularias, he was my first arboreal. Died due to DKS last week. I placed him in the freezer in a Tupperware container. Once I was ready to preserve him: I removed all contents in abdomen and thorax very meticulously. Literally removed everything inside. I had not heard of anyone flushing the insides with alcohol or acetone, so I didn't do that step, unfortunately. I placed cotton balls inside his abdomen and thorax very carefully. Then I pinned him on styrofoam. Well, the problem is that 3 days after this he began to stink like he's rotting. I read Febreze can help with this, but am wondering if it will get worse. Do you have any advice about what I can do at this point? This is my first time doing this. I would rather not use resin or place him in a jar of alcohol or formalin. I highly appreciate you, fellow Floridian!!
@TarantulaHaven
@TarantulaHaven 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Wheezy, thank you. I had the same problem with a scorpion I pinned. I didn't use any chemicals to prepare it and it began to rot. I was still able to salvage it because after that is when I learned that you can use 91% alcohol or acetone to clean out the insides. Not only does this help to dry it out faster but it also does something to the tissue to where it firms it up a little. After this I didn't have any problems with smell or decay. If it's still in good shape and not decaying too badly you can still salvage it but you may have to use a syringe with a needle to spray inside. If you can, try to get it into the carapace area as well. Also, for future reference, don't use anything natural like cotton balls for stuffing. It's too absorbent and may even be part of the smell. Use a synthetic poly-fill instead.

Thanks for the vid, might sound dumb but how do you mount them in final frame? Do you use pins still but less, a strap of some kind or some sort of glue to keep them in position? :) cracking video, i would say cant wait to give it a try.. but kinda want my tarantulas to stay living lol. Oh and for the silica you can buy the beads super cheap in bulk or buy those scented room dehumidifier's they are filled with silica beads in a plastic shell and are super cheap. I think its about 6 for £3 here use them myself to keep stuff in the safe dry. Here is a picture of one. i.imgur.com/CHbIi6D.jpg Thanks again for the vid / info. ;)

@TarantulaHaven 3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks, I’ve never looked into them considering I just save packets. 😂 Mounting them is usually personal preference. I’ll demonstrate that in the next video but some use tape, others use glue. I’m thinking about using a double sided tape for mine.
@AdamsWorlds
@AdamsWorlds 3 жыл бұрын
@@TarantulaHaven Cool i was going to wing it with super glue but was unsure if it would react or even hold up over time lol. Yeah the scented dehumidifier's are ace. Make the room smell nice same time lol. Scary how well they work they go in dry and come out filled almost to the top of water in my safe in just a few months.

As someone who has to grade a *lot* of FFA and 4-H insect collections I can assure you that in most cases trying to pin a tarantula is a really bad idea. Their joints are too soft and easily broken, they are full of fluids that don't dry easily and tend to rot, and the abdomens either fall off or shrivel up terribly. Preserving in 70% alcohol is the way to go. At the acarology lab I work at we preserve most of our specimens in this way.
@TarantulaHaven
@TarantulaHaven 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t like having them in jars of alcohol. You can’t see them very well and they’re not as interesting that way. I haven’t had a bad experience preserving them this way. I have a MM P. subfusca I pinned about a year ago that’s still in good shape. Dried out just fine. He was my prototype.
