James Abram Garfield was our 20th President of the United States. His presidency was tragically cut short by an assassin’s bullet only 100 days after inauguration in 1881 - Garfield’s Presidency has the second shortest tenure in U.S. Presidential History behind William Henry Harrison who served only a month. However, leading up to the White House, served as an Ohio State Senator for 2 years and was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 9 terms. He was an American Civil War veteran who achieved the Rank of Major General. He was also a Teacher, a Lawyer, and an Ordained Minister.
President Garfield is the only American President that you would be able to visit their birthplace, 2 homes and their final resting place all in one day as they are all within a short drive from one another. But for today we are exploring his life and times and will share with you a visit to his tomb and memorial located at Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.
Oh, and speaking of Lake View Cemetery - it’s one of the most historically significant cemeteries in the country. You’ll see other notables such as industrialist and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, Mr. Rock-n-Roll himself Alan Freed, the Famous lawman who brought down mob boss Al Capone, Elliott Ness, and then you’ll see the only major league baseball player to have been killed by a pitch - Ray Chapman. These are just to name a few.
