Cohen went to jail PRIMARILY for millions of dollars of tax fraud - which had nothing to do with Trump. The other two charges they tacked on of "Campaign Finance Violation" and "Excessive Campaign Contribution" were highly speculative - so much so I wonder why he even pleaded guilty to them. But obviously he did so because he feared serving far longer in prison if found guilty in a trial. It was a classic plea deal - a common pressure tactic by prosecutors - which limited his jail time. They had him on the tax evasion, and offered him a deal - plead guilty to the "campaign finance violations" and we'll give you a really soft sentence. Yes, the "catch and kill" and "NDA" payments were indeed made by Cohen, but they are demonstrably NOT for the SOLE purpose of "influencing an election". They are legitimate payments to avoid embarrassment with family members. That means they should not be subject to the "Campaign Finance Violation" legislation. Ditto for the other charge of "excessive campaign contribution". Just because Cohen took a plea deal under pressure, does not mean Trump did anything illegal. Even the federal prosecutor did not take this case forward against Trump - it's just Alvin Bragg - and it is quite honestly a joke. A lengthy Op Ed was written in the NY Times by a legal expert explaining why this is a ridiculous prosecution of Trump.
