This must be the first post-Michael Larson show. Peter was dazed after his $110,237 win. In any event, RIP Peter David Tomarken (1942-2006) and Paul Michael Larson. (1949-1999)

The old Jump The Shark website had the Larson episodes as the "shark jump" point, but I'd beg to differ, as there was still a lot of great exciting games to come. This was also a rare game where the same prize slide (The Car) appears twice in the same show.

"Peter is still noticeably shaken from the Mike Larson event." And there's a good reason for that. This was taped immediately after the Larson Reign of Terror (same day in fact). The next 5 episodes (#190-#194), were taped the following day. Then, they looked into how Larson won so much money and when they found out, that was when they made all those changes to the patterns for the taping of the 6/20/84 episode (which was early in June).

I always like it when more than one of the biggest prizes get hit in the same game, in this case the two standards, the car and tent trailer. I almost think this also isn't the first time someone hit the car, but it's the tent trailer player who ends up winning.

And you can see, at 4:57, the '2, 12, 1, 9, 4' sequence play out as he's describing the rules for the first spins round. This sequence was key to Larson's $110,237 performance. Honestly, CBS dodged a bullet when nobody else pulled the same kind of thing in the few shows that followed before the switchover. Anyone else who had hand-eye coordination and a mind for patterns could've done it. It basically exposed the producers as lazy for not changing patterns often enough.

The changes were immediate, but only after the days tapings had ended. Press Your Luck taped about 4-6 episodes a day, so right after Larson's run, they still had a few more sessions to go. It was after that day, did they make changes to the list of patterns on the Big Board. This is why you still see the '2, 12, 1, 9, 4' pattern in this episode.

Well, after seeing probably what the heck miachel went through, no one was going to go ahead and win 110k. They hadn't practiced enough. Win the game, sure. Before larson there were people who knew some patterns, but only knew just enough that they were still at risk. Ann, the lady with the second whammy not showing up despite having three, and some others all knew something, just didn't have the pratice of watching others play enough to notice.

@@ShadowLinkxMaster The first change to the board patterns debuted in 195, then another change in 215, before upgrading to a 32-board pattern that lasted until the series finale.

It was a few episodes later. Reva's win was the last one with the Larson patterns.

John Lee no. They still had this episode to tape after the Larson episode, and another weeks worth of episodes the next day, so it was impossible to create 5 new patterns on the fly. Episode 195 would be the debut of new patterns.

Yeah, I'm wondering what's up with that. I guess we'll see if it was still there on the next episode. Worth noting that it had been MIA for a bit prior to this, but that's also due to that lower corner prize space hitting a drought period of not being hit at all for a couple of weeks - thus why the Mexican Cruise was there for several episodes in a row until finally Janie's final spin hit it out of there.

A guy named "Mike," who got exactly three spins in round one, hits a whammy on his first spin and it's the one with the spaceship? How does this seem familiar? What's more, if Mike had stopped the board just two spaces earlier, he'd have nailed Larson's infamous 2-12-1-9-4 pattern for big bucks!

CBS would be completely flabbergasted to see someone memorize 32 board patterns and implement it successfully, making a fool out of them AGAIN. The situation would be made worse with double your money and a spin.

I'm pretty sure $15,069 is the highest ever 3rd place score this show ever had. It looks like the Whammy was still spooked by Michael, lol.

@@robertanderson2898 Correct. I double-checked, and to my amazement, this is actually the sixth (!) time third place finished with five figures. But the other five all had third-place scores not that much above 10,000 (Miguel from Patti's Double Your $$ win had exactly 10K), this is the first to put some distance above that.

The CAR was still there after Mike hit it. Error? Or did they have 2 cars and were feeling generous after the Larson fiasco? :) And funny they'd have another Michael immediately after.....

[answered thank you] I may be wrong but did the lights pattern change by the time this episode aired? I saw a post here that it did but I could sworn I saw that same 2,12,1,9,4 pattern or whatever around Jo's turn around the 7:18-7:22 mark. Maybe it was "more random".

John Lee Not until a few weeks later. This was taped the same before they investigated. You can see Michael's 2,12,1,9,4 pattern is still being used. I read they changed the 5 patterns the next month and again the following month before figuring out how to create 32 patterns, solving the problem for good.

Nolan Cain That's interesting. I'm surprised they risked another taping and didn't worry someone else could try his trick. Guess they were trying to cover it up from the start.

They did the sunday tapings afterwards and then scrapped the original light patterns at the next weekend of tapings.

This episode was taped right after the Larson episode. They had 5 more taped (190-194) the next day. 195 was the following week (which by that point they had new patterns for the board.

They imposed the cap in response to Michael's win.

bencalebrod The cap was there before Michael was; likely when the show started. It stated a if a player reached $25,000 during any number of shows they wouldn't be allowed to return. But if they went over $25,000 they could keep their winnings. Michael kept his money, he wasn't allowed to return.
