he didn't cheat the system but if you want to see a contestant really tear it up and make the game fun, check out Gene Snyder. he was highly regarded as Peter Tomarken's favorite contestant.

9:42 - Look carefully at Michael Larson's last two spins (at that point) plus Ed's "Whammy" spin following; the slides appear to be changing at random in time with the bouncing light instead of at the same time with each other. My only guess is the producers tried a last-ditch attempt to throw Larson off his game. (Needless to say, the board stabilised once Ed was into his second spin.)

Michael Larson exposed the business brilliantly and beat the season. CBS behind the scenes were happy that he cracked the code.

The funny thing about this episode is that Michael played so comically bad in the first round. But once the 2nd round hits, it looks like he made a deal with the devil. (Even as early as the questions for spins of the 2nd round.) 11:25-For one brief moment, and 2 spins, it looked like Ed had the Michael Larson touch. Janie looked like she was going to cry when she got that whammy. (Not so sure I blame her. To FINALLY get her chance to spin, and to have the whammy come up.)

Between seeing it on Buzzr and seeing this game here, I have finally seen the Larson episodes as they were originally broadcast. I never knew about these eps because after the original broadcasts, they weren't allowed for syndication, and even now are only out for a few showings from time to time.

Michael Larson used his cash winnings for taxes and real estate investments. However, he had other problems, such as getting in trouble with the law and getting involved in illegal schemes. As a result, he lost all of his winnings and decided to migrate to Florida, where he later died of throat cancer at the age of 49. Tomarken and his second wife, Kathleen, were killed in a plane crash, where he was the pilot, on the morning of March 13, 2006. So sad. So sad.

He was part of a "radio contest" where a dollar with a certain serial number was worth $30,000. He had bags of one-dollar bills around the house and those were stolen. The thing is: It was one thing to break the bank, but he thought he could keep doing it.

If you watch awhile, you can tell there are patterns. It seems pretty obvious. It's so "low tech" compared to these days. I guess no one else thought of this in the 80s.

But if you're watching on TV, with no thought of watching again and again, and it's 1983-84, you're not giving it a second thought. Larson's win was it noticing _that_ there were patterns, that there were so relatively few, mastering them, _and_ getting on the show to do this.

You figure, VCR tech was only really massively in the public for a couple of years or so at that point, so the thought of someone recording Press Your Luck religiously, studying the tapes, and coming to Television City armed with the knowledge of the board was still not a consideration. Today, with the proliferation of the internet, and people able to take said information on the internet and break down said information, someone could even potentially arm themselves with the knowledge of the post-Larson patterns when they put up so many more patterns. With the new Press Your Luck ABC is going to air (and the GSN version 15+ years before), they have the technology to easily randomize the patterns, so there’s no way anyone is pulling a Larson again. The payouts on the prime time version ABC will air will definitely be considerably more than $110k for many situations, but no one is taking to the board 40+ times and taking ABC and Fremantle for an ungodly sum of money.

Technically no, since he never really cheated. However, the winning limit that CBS set on all it's game shows was obviously reached (I think it was set at 50,000 at this point, and that was something that was set because of the Twenty-One scandal), so by rule, he was retired.

Sorry for the 2y reply. I was brought to this video from another video that talked about him. He was doing a radio contest thing where if they match the serial number to their 1 dollar bill they win a ton of money. He withdrew his 90k in all 1 dollar bills and tried finding the number but never did. He put some of his cash away and before he could finish, his house was broken into- losing 50k in the process. After a while i suppose he had a series of bad luck which is probably why he died nearly broke.

something new...This is why the producers tried to keep Michael ...the producers set this up but they didnt expect Michael to be able to do what he did which in poker would be being able to read the cards. But the producers planned this as you can tell when Ed said I neeed $5000 + one spin lets the board go around couple seconds then says stop....guess what...Ed gets his $5000 + one spin....DEAD GIVEAWAY this whole thing was set up but backfired on teh producers...

Let's not be idiots here. This was not set up ... it's well-known that Michael taped episodes and memorized the board patterns (which are admittedly very obvious). Then he got on the show and went on a winning spree. Really simple explanation.

No different than figuring out the patterns to the arcade games Donkey Kong and Pac-Man, is the arcade operator gonna kick me out of the video arcade for doing that? Once you figure them out you can run up the scoreboard, he didn''t cheat' he just simply mastered the game. oh, and BTW, he only whammied in order to cover his tracks in Round 1.

He may be a bit greedy, but I still can't blame him. He has multiple wives and children. He needs to care for them. So I would think that you are just spiteful. Also at 12:00, when Ed gets his second whammy. Micheal reaches over and places his hand on Ed's shoulder. He cares for Ed. Then Janie, from the get go thought he was creepy. So Micheal never got to be nice or friendly to her. He was scared it would start something. Please take these facts into consideration.

It seemed as if he was looked at fondly for what he did on the show not so much who he was. Ed Long appeared to be very nice to him through out the show and even the document. Tomarken thinks only positively of him. Janie didnt and while his brother appeared on Whammy for him and appeared to have fun he didnt looks fondly of his brother.
