I LOVE my 3 piece weights! They are never wrong. The gauge on my old yellow canner is pretty far off, but the weight (10lb for me) can't be off unless I weld something on it or take a cutting torch and cut a hunk out of it...lol

my mother-n-law gave me her 30 yr old Presto canner. It's been great. I've replaced the rubber gaskets, but that's all. We have moved and it's been in storage, so I probably need to have the gauge checked now. Thanks for the video. - Donna

Our extension will still calibrate the pg but the one closest to me is like two hours away 😜

Yeah. Thank you so much for sharing this information. I have two presto pressure canners. Now I know I am doing the right things (everything you said), plus one more I store empty jars in the canner so when I am going to can its one less thing I have to look for, it also saves on shelf space. Liz

So happy you have this! I am having issues with a brand new pressure canner I purchased from Tractor Supply and have had issues ever since! I have only successfully canned 3 recipes and still having issues. I have called presto and they have sent me a new seal - however, It is hard to get to pressure still and I can hear the leaks and cannot figure out what I am doing incorrectly. I will be trying what you suggest and crossing my fingers. I have so many canning recipes I need to do! hahahahaha Bless you and thank you so much for all you do for us newbies... oldies but goodies..... lolol

It's now 2022 & I still love my Presto canner. I had an issue today, but fixed it before I did a load of beef soup. The metal air vent/cover lock gasket failed (came apart while checking it). Maintaining a canner is very important!

I use the weighted pressure regulator you mentioned because I do not trust pressure gauges. However, since I need to pressure can to 11 psi because of my altitude, I superglued a nickel to the top so that it starts to giggle at just over 11 psi. I HIGHLY recommend buying this!! You are right, you don't have to stand there and adjust the burner constantly with this method. I have two of these regulators with a nickel superglued to the top just to have a backup! Thanks!

My Presto doesn't have a gauge, just the weight that you adjust from 5-15 pounds of pressure. I'm hoping to invest in an All American sometime this year. I've wondered why my particular model (which is less than 5 years old) doesn't have a gauge. Great video!

Love the video! Would u know how to get corrosion/calcium deposits out of the pressure regulator? I can’t get a brush down in there to clean it. I have a small pipe cleaner but it’s still hard to get in there and I’m not having any success. I would really appreciate any advice.

this is great info. My husband and I started canning some this year and are using my MIL's old Mirro brand canners .... they don't have the gauge ..... you just put the weight on at 10 lbs and it jiggles. Kinda concerns me since I don't see anyone using this brand ? But hubby says she used it all his life and had no problems. Do you know anything about them ? Got 136 ears of sweet corn to clean and can up today !!

Laura, I don't know anything about them. But that doesnt mean much. The two top brands appear to be All American and Presto. But I too have seen Mirro brands around, just don't know anyone who uses them. If your MIL used it without issue, then I garner to say it's safe. The weight is a great method that removes a lot of stress. But check on your altitude. If a recipe calls for 11lbs of pressure for x amount of time, then the 10lb wont be enough. You'll need to use the 15lb instead.

Thank you for your very informative videos they’ve been a big help. Quick question I just picked up a old gold canner like the one you were showing there , what is the valve in the center that goes up and down I thought maybe a pressure release?

I bet those brushes for cleaning the reusable straws would do a good job on the vents too.

I just replaced my old presto with a new presto. I’ve canned 4 times with the new one. Right away between loads during washing, it leaves a silver grey residue on my towels and even my hands are covered. Has anyone had this problem with the newer models? My old one does not do this. Brand new 2 days ago.

Leisa, I have a new stove and the front burners are too hot to use my Presto canner, the back burners would work, but i can't vent for 10 minutes back there, not much clearance, could i vent for the 10 minutes and then move the canner back to the lower burner to can? It will be very heavy but my husband can do it.

If the back burners can't get it hit enough to vent, how will they keep the canner at pressure?

@@SuttonsDaze it's just the initial 10 minutes, after that the jiggler doesn't vent as much steam, it will be ok.

Do you have a video or good resource for a Presto without a gauge?? I have a 16 qt without the gauge. When I got the new parts for mine, I Goggled the model number off the bottom, a ton of Presto pages and Amazon pages came up.

Hey! Can't find my answer anywhere on the internet I'm so frustrated. My vent/cover lock still steam steadily while my presto is getting up to pressure, even when regulator is on. It isn't going past 9 pounds pressure.... I have used it 3x before, and that wasn't an issue. What could have gone wrong?

I can't get my new canned cleaned? I have a black soot like stuff coming off?? Have you heard of people having a hard time getting a new canner clean?

Thank you! I have scrubbed it really good, but my towels pick up a black residue. Plus I canned some raw chicken today and the new rings looked uGH-ly

I don't know if I can post a question in an older video, but here goes... I bought a new gas range and the burner is 20,000 BTU. I couldn't believe how fast it heated up the water! With the lid closed, I let the steam vent (or mostly strong hiss, less visible steam) for 10 minutes before I place the weighted gauge. But it was already over 5 PSI before I hit that 10 minutes. I'm having a hard time finding where to turn the gas dial to keep it at 10 PSI - a smidge one direction and the PSI is climbing upward of 12 before I lower it, again a smidge and it's close to losing its jiggly (almost going under 10 PSI). Has anyone had this happen, anyone using an ultra-high BTU for tips, including the strong hiss without visible steam?

Audible steam counts, you can't always see it. Keep practicing with just water in the canner
