The reason it was so easy to escape the quicksand pit was because the tub was like 3 feet deep, so they could just push against the bottom. Actual quicksand is deeper than that.

And they just used wet sand. Quick sand actually breaks the bounds of being both solids and liquids due to liquefaction.
