In Buddhism, Pretas are described as entities that are "always hungry" (craving) but they cannot satisfy their hunger. It is unclear if this "hunger" is in reference to food or is an allegory for describing 'desire for other bodily or sensory pleasures'. If I am not mistaken, Garuda Purana describes Pretas.

The Sanskrit term प्रेत preta means "departed, deceased, a dead person", from pra-ita, literally "gone forth, departed". In Classical Sanskrit, the term refers to the spirit of any dead person, but especially before the obsequial rites are performed... All Preta are not ghost or demon or evil being... its mere a transitional state after death...

Pretas are made up with only Two of the Five great Elements. Vayu and Akasha. But humans are made up with Five. So you need not to worry because you are more powerful than any creature in this universe. But I will request to everyone to be kind and have sympathy for this poor creature. Pretas are very hungry. You are confused with pretas and pisachhas . Pret is a state between dead and next GATI ( progress) whether it is positive or negative . Every human pass through this state . What you described is Pisachha

It was indeed not a Preta but I dont know what to call a lady of around 95 years old at the top of a very tall Mango tree calling my name at evening and only evening not morning night or anything. Though my name is not very simple to pronounce but eventually I ended up in hospital for a week with fever. That calling was not at all scary I must admit.

A lot of people think of spirits like hauntings of demons posession, those are the msot extreme cases. Most of the time it's just subtle influence. Like a preta that likes alcohol, and if it becomes attached to you, it can cause you to become an alcoholic. Or it can attach to you and you become depressed or anxious etc... most of the problems in life often have a spiritual compenent to them as well. There are usually multiple causes and conditions to any problem, so some of the problem may be physical, but some of the same problem could also have a spiritual cause or driver. The most common problem is unhappy ancestors. A lot of issues like addiction, inability to have children, inability to find or keep a job etc... come from ancestral karma. This is why pitru paksha is something Hindus do annually to pacify ancestral spirits.

As per the supreme lord SriKrishna, there are 3 kinds of worshippings also, worshipping in the 3 gunas, worship in sattvika guna, worship in rajasika guna and worship in tamasika guna. sattvika is mode of goodness. rajasika is mode of passion. tamasika is mode of ignorance. most of the tantrik practices are in tamasika guna or mode of ignorance, and practised by those who are mostly in the guna of ignorance. Lord Shiva is a tamasik guna avatar of Lord Krishna, which means Lord Shiva is controller or incharge of the tamasika guna or mode or quality of ignorance.

You should not eat food which contains bone, hair, nail or cough(mucus) in it. Even if you are non-vegetarian you can eat non-veg but not if it is impure as it is considered that the food which contains all this is meant for the consumption of 'pretas'. And if you eat that kind of food it means you are inviting them to eat along with you therefore they may come into your house.

Though Rajarshi is very intelligent and is a master in his field (Tantra) , these things like evil spirits are a bit incomprehensible..According to my understanding once a body is dead either due to old age or disease or other untimely and unfortunate incidents or whatever, it'll keep on taking rebirth until it attains liberation. Once the body and associated subtle mind (It's a form of energy) are dead how can there be an evil power ? This concept is against our Hindu philosophy.

Nope you are making a mistake here , some spirits even after death are attached to the material world they can't leave there Desires , also yoo have acknowledge that a sprint to get rebirth the proper kria have to performed by the family members, and if a family member doesn't perform the proper kria , pind dahn and all then obviously the spirit won't get moksha, and it will be stuck in this plane of existence.. also buddy hindu philosophy is way complexe , to understand every aspect of it, it will take you more than decade to know.

Like animal Yonis (Bodies), there are Yonis called Preta Yonis (Bodies). Those who die a violent death, untimely death/ suicide or those whose last rites haven't been performed remain in Preta Yoni, unless someone from their family perform specific rituals like Pinda Daana etc in spirtual places of significannce like Gaya or Trayambakeshwar, to free their tortured souls from Preta Yoni and free them to a Yoni according to their Karma. There are human beings in other part of the world who doesn't have such rituals or such holy places. Where do they go? Does that mean those part of the planet are full of ghosts. And is it possible for an ordinary human being to grant liberation to the "disturbed soul" by just performing the rites?
