I recently bought a brand new quest, apparently someone already used it and returned it saying it was new I am sure. This is why I hate walmart

You’d be amazed how fast it happens too. When I first got mine few years back, I walked out in the sun for about 4 seconds on my porch. I wasn’t paying attention and was holding it face down where the lens got direct sunlight. Then I went to put on my headset and there were now sun spots on the screen. Luckily it was the first week and oculus just replaced it for free, but it caused me to start keeping mine in a case with a piece of fabric covering the lens when I’m not using it 😅

My dumb ass was thinking this would be about sending a vr headset into the sun

its not damaging the lenses, its damaging the screens through and using the lenses

it doesn't burn the lenses, it burns the display behind the lenses.

I saw a kid while camping with a loving family and a really nice camper, playing an oculus outside. I cant with these kids.

it's mainly about the wide angle lenses on the several cameras around the oculus that could damage the sensors slightly and permanently mess up the tracking.

i once tried to play outside in my headset, controller tracking was horrid

With oled displays, you can. Lcd displays will get damaged if you leave them in direct light, dark patches will appear in them if they are left in direct sunlight.

I once tried to use my oculus outside in my backyard on a dry cloudy day. I discovered it doesn't track the controllers well in that environment.

For anyone that doesn’t know basically the lenses are a magnifying glass

From a vr player with burned lenses, the clip of the vr with lens burn is extreme lens burn. If you do burn your lenses, you will just et a few dots on your screen

I actually had it happen to me when I left my VR facing towards the window and it burnt a line through the screen from the sun moving across the window.

I played on my porch before, there’s a green dot and it’s been on my lenses for years 😂

I have a yellow burn on my screen too!! But I never left it out in direct sunlight… it’s strange.

The issue is that it focuses it in one direction but wouldn’t it’s lead it out in the other direction love you’re stuff tho and would love a follow up explaining this

I brought my Index and pc in my backyard of my old place once on a sunny day. I didnt know about this back then. Thankfully valve actually replaced it for me even though it was my fault. Very little damage but it was a little burn spot.

The lenses only focus light one way, if light goes through the eye facing part of the lens it would be dispersed

My brother took mine outside for some reason one day. It has a weird orange spot in the lens but its easy to ignore once you get into a game or app

That's what happened to my meta quest 2. I stopped using it a long time ago after I got the quest 3.

Imagine you’re oculus is making an image of the sun and it focuses on one lil dot so it would burn your eyes

So THATS why i have a yellow dot in my left lens when I play, good to know. And since its only in one lens its super easy to block out when playing

It's actually worse than you think. The lens is designed to take light from a surface and focus it to a small point in front of your eye while maintaining the fov. So what will happen is any light going into this focal point will be evenly dispersed on the LCD side. Basically, ensuring you cook your entire LCD relatively evenly

I have a quest 2. It has the yellow things from the sun. It’s been like that for years so I’m used to it now but I remember when I first got it I don’t know how it happened and what it was and it looked like Arabic so I asked my Muslim mom if she knew what it was 😂. It was only in the right eye too so I thought it was some digital error. I asked Reddit, tried to reset it, asked the official help center and I only figured it out from a video 💀

It's fine to put your headset in the sun as long as the lenses don't see the sunlight.

It’s good to get protective glasses so if you feel heat on the glasses take the headset off

I learned the hard way on my first one but it still worked.. until I tried to punch someone in vr and knocked my head set off across the room and breaking it… but then 2 years later I have 2 headsets both working but lost all my other games

you can actually use it outside, you just have to cover the lenses when you dont have your quest on. your tracking and passthrough cameras are not like the lenses, they dont focus light through them. so you can use your quest outside. just dont let the sun shine INTO your lenses Edit: ive also played outside before so yeah

Just use a sock or any other thick cloth to block the lenses while not in use and not in box.

Are we ignoring how the lens is facing the opposite direction? It would disperse any light coming from outside the headset.

If the glass is designed to focus light INTO your eye then sun going in the opposite direction would get spread out amongst the screen

The real question is why are people leaving their headset outside?

If it focuses the images to the eye then wouldn’t light going through it be spread and not focused? Genuinely asking cuz I thought that’s how lenses work

I’ve played VR outside before for like 15 min and as long as your not in direct sunlight your fine

Serious question though, If you were to play with your oculus outside, would the cameras on the oculus quest to burn from the sun? As long as I don’t have the lenses exposed to the sun, I should be fine, right?

Im an audio engineer, not a light person, but wouldn't it not be focused because it would be going in the opposite way? Light is focused from the screen to your eye, but if shined through the other way, wouldn't it refract?

I did this and I now have one blind eye 😊

It will overheat the Oculus causing premature damage to the system. It may not be noticeable at first, but you will notice it later on
