Claire McCormack and Thomas Bostrom share the heartbreaking patient story of their daughter Nora. At three-years-old, Nora had a central line placed to treat her pulmonary hypertension. Nora's life was cut short due to preventable medical errors.

I just stumbled across this video when trying to find a video about operating PCA pumps. I am a student nurse and I begin central line dressing changes TOMORROW in my skills class. I promise to think about Nora as I prepare not only for this skill, but in every action I take as a student nurse and as a practicing nurse. Maybe I stumbled across this video for a reason. My heart goes out to Nora's parents.

This is so heartbreaking to watch and there are simply no words. I would like to know how Nora's mom is doing.

The video is not clear, but was it a central line infection that resulted in this child's death?

Your right t's not clear but from personal experience of having central lines I'm guessing they felt she was allergic to or getting skin irritation from the alcohol sterilising wipes or type dressing the protocol recommends to use. So instead of finding a safe effective alternative that didn't cause reactions they either didn't bother using the sterilising wipes or used a product that isn't as effective at killing bacteria or perhaps used a improper dressing. Once they changed the way the dressing was done she got a line infection which are very serious because the line goes directly into the top of your heart so it causes blood infections (sepsis) and can easily cause myocarditis a infection in the heart muscle both of which can be fatal. Despite multiple serious infections they carried on using incorrect supplies for the dressing changes that goes against the hospital protocol thus increasing the risk of dangerous infections. They didn't learn their lesson or consult with a specialist on what would be best to use of x was causing a reaction they Carried on using a insufficient dressing change method and supplies ultimately leading to more infections one of witch likely caused the death of the child from sepsis It's not as clear cut as many of the cases of medical error and neglect leading to death but it's highlighting the importance of following protocol and consulting a expert if issues like a reaction/allergy occur rather than just leaving steps out or using alternative supplies without asking. Hospitals take a long time researching and looking into media studies as well as consulting the top specialists in order to compile a dressing change method and list of supplies that best reduce the risk of cross contaminating and infections and they should be followed to the letter skipping a step would be iris possible and increase the risk of infections and complications

Sorry but NO!!! You signed the consent for them to place a central line and one of the risks as part of a consent is a chance infection. They don't place a central line in a child without your permission. Having a central line is very risky and INCREASES your chance of infection! You should have said no if you were not willing to take that risk, the doctor would have given the drug another way. This is not a medical error! Infection is a major risk of any procedure on hospital! Just walking into a hospital puts you at risk of infection everyday. Nurses are at risk of catching HIV, Tuberculosis, Help c ect....but they still show up and their job! Hospital need to try and reduce the risk of hospital acquired infections but they can't guarantee chances of elimination of bacteria because we don't live in a 100 percent sterile world, that's the reality.

You're a gross human being. Signing a consent form for treatment is not excusing medical professionals from knowing how to adjust to that risk of infection. Extra/other precautions/protocols could have been followed.

Blaming the mother? The doctor recommend the central line, not the parents. You’re incompetent.

This maybe true but i am a nursing student and was assigned this case for a paper on preventable medical error kills. 100,000 deaths a year. ive been working in health care for almost 7 years. We should expect more from the healthcare field then to just show up and do their job.

@@ickyvicky7758I have been working as a nurse for over ten years. Sterile dressing changes on central lines can and do get infected. Even when done properly.

It’s easy to play Monday morning quarter back. Life is not finite. The loss of a child is something no one should have to endure. I’m sorry for the pain. I just don’t find glorifying medical errors in a field as complex as medicine to be particularly useful. If you don’t want line infections then don’t place central lines. Unfortunately it’s not that easy. People need central lines and central lines save lives. Central lines also get infected. It’s easy to say don’t accept central line infections. What’s the solution. Place a new line every day knowing the the mere placement of a central line can cause morbidity and mortality. I think most hospitals follow fairly balanced protocols for line management. If there was a better way to do this we would ALL BE DOING it. I just don’t understand people who think the fact that something horrible happens means something is wrong, We should not be following the advice of biased highly emotional people. We should follow the advice of level headed well informed intelligent people. Again I’m sorry for anyone who has suffered unimaginable loss.
