This video demonstrates how to set up a toe graft so that dog ears (corners that poke straight up at the edges of the graft) are minimized. While the actual grafting process is also shown, this video is not meant as a tutorial for learning to graft. To learn more about the actual process of grafting see my previous video here:

So glad I went back and reviewed this as I just made a sock (only had time for 1, the 2nd is under way). I intentionally used a very tight knit, and smaller than normal needles on gorgeous Canadian Indie dyed yarn purchased while in Canada over Christmas. I knew the day I originally grafted the toe I would be redoing it, on a day when I could actually see what I was doing. I needed a refresher on dogless ear sock toes. Once back in bright sun, I took apart the toe, not all that easy on this beautifully dyed yarn - but definitely worth it. I now have a lovely smooth rounded toe, even before washing. Grateful for all the sock knitting tips. 🧶🧦😊

That was so simple and so very helpful. i just have memorized the Kitchner stitch but wasn't sure how to avoid the "dog ears". Not only does this eliminate that, but also gives us fewer stitches to graft. Thank you!

You are hands down the best knitting teacher on the internet! The class dunce here has to ask a question about adjusting the tension after grafting. How do you know which of those yarns to pull on? I grafted a pair last night using your brilliant technique so I “passed the course”. I couldn’t score bonus marks, though, because after gently but wrongly tugging a few yarns, I stopped for fear of ruining my already improved pair of socks.

Thank you so much! I have always though that some sort of decrease might be the key to minimizing dog ears, but I could never come up with anything that worked to my satisfaction. What a simple and elegant solution you present! The dog ear is especially noticeable on worsted mittens. Thanks to you, my future socks and mittens will be dog ear free!

This video helped me so much to get into grafting again. I have a few pair of socks that are all done except for the grafting. I like seeing you adjust the tension from the inside; a new perspective but personally I like adjusting the tension right-side-out using a darning egg. Thank you Roxanne. 🌺

Another great video! Thanks so much. Now... a request: please do more on. Stranded color work, particularly for socks. I’ve made a couple pairs of socks with color work on just a portion of the leg. I’ve played around with various options to accommodate for the loss of stretch due to the color work. I’ve added stitches to just that portion of the leg as was suggested by Kate Atherley in her book Custom Socks. I was very careful to be consistent with how I carried my yarns and managed my floats. It helped, but it was still difficult to get the sock over the instep. You always seem to have such insightful solutions to our knitting woes, please consider this one!

Love this idea on a toe chimney and you did a fabulous job of making it look simple enough for me to figure out. I usually knit vanilla style socks without much of a hitch. I bought Cat Bordhi's book on personal footprint sock to make. YIKES! I have expensive yarn I am using which may have been the worst mistake I could make because I love working with it and it is close to ruined with a particle ball of yarn left to do two socks that are just starting after the toe. I have had to cut the sock apart and am so frustrated that I cannot get it right that I am going back to the regular toe sock I knit. My next pair will be the top down sock and I will use some of your techniques.

Rox...your timing is exquisite! I’ve been experimenting with every kind of dog ears avoidance technique for two weeks. Nothing passed my acid test...that is, until your video arrived tonight. Worked like a charm. Two questions if I may: -do you knit a plain row after your last decrease or just jump into your technique? -what is that perfect decrease method you use? Looks like it might be SSK/K2T, but I can’ really see the whole thing. I’ve watched all your videos, some more than once, and have gained so much knowledge. Like you, I need to know the why as much as the how. Keep those podcasts coming, please. Carla Jewett nycSox
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 6 жыл бұрын
I do not knit a plain row after the final decrease row. That would only exacerbate the dog ear issue, as grafting also adds 2 rows. I work my decrease rounds by working k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 for each half, which is pretty standard. That is, the decreases lean toward the area changing in size.

I hope you add a link to your new Finchley Graft. No ears, done a practice toe and am wearing the pair hot off the needles and it is easy and looks good too. I've used this method you show on this video and it does work too but I must admit I think next pair of socks I'll ask myself what I want to do and will do another Finchley toe, like the result that much.
@beateengelhardt3830
@beateengelhardt3830 4 жыл бұрын
You are awesome! One question though: you are still doing the Kitchener set-up after decreasing the first sts on each needle as well as going twice through the last sts. A lot of people these days suggest omitting the set-up. Do you know of a downside to jumping right into the Kitchener repeat after the decrease? I hope my question makes sense...
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 4 жыл бұрын
The key to avoiding dog ears is to graft after a decrease round, and then to do something to round those corners. Some people skip the setup and final steps in order to round the corners, but I often can't find an ideal place to push the needle through to the WS (I can obviously push it through, but I prefer the obvious spot I have when I maintain the setup steps and round the corners by passing over the outer sts. The Finchley graft (which is done from the purl side) skips the setup, which eliminates the dog ears, but because the yarn is already on the WS, there's no issue with finding the right spot to get the yarn tail to the WS.

I would like to know why it is necessary to do the setup step when beginning the kitchener stitch. I have had others tell me that when you do sock kitchener you can just do the 4 steps without doing the set up on the first front and back stitches.
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 6 жыл бұрын
That is certainly a method some knitters use. If you want to see what the difference is, I would suggest knitting a couple of swatches, and comparing the version where the 4-steps are used (with no setup or final steps) vs the version where all steps are used. Then compare with the pass-over method.

I do demonstrate how to graft in this video, it's just not meant as a full grafting tutorial. The video from the previous week, on grafting in stockinette, explains in more detail about grafting. I'll fix the description box so that it includes the link, but you should be able to find a playlist of my grafting videos on my channel. Click on my name under the video player to get to my channel, then click on PLAYLISTS and you should find one on grafting. The video you're looking for isn't a video on grafting sock toes, it's a video on grafting in stockinette.

I'm curious why you prefer the yarn needles with the bent tip. I don't know why but they just bug me! I once bought one for an emergency when I had no needle, but I did not like using it.
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 6 жыл бұрын
When I seam or graft, the needle is often changing directions -- I'm poking down through the surface of the fabric to catch a loop of yarn and then bringing the needle back up. The bent tip facilitates that process, acting like a hook. Obviously, a straight tip can work (and has for millennia), but it requires more movement of the shaft to make those turns/catch those loops. It could be the angle you normally hold your needle, which works well for a straight tip, doesn't work well for the bent tip. Luckily, you don't *have* to use a bent tip, if you don't like it, but if you are ever stuck with that as your only option, you might watch yourself as you enter the fabric, and see if a different angle might work better when using a different tool.

Hi Roxanne, I love the technique of passing the end sts over the neighbor sts. I fon’t quite get why it’s more appropriate to tension the grafted sts at the end. I tension as I go and adjust if I have to at the end but most of the time the tension seems ok. Is there less pressure on the sts during wear if the graft tension is fixed at the end rather than as one lnits?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 6 жыл бұрын
If you can graft with the right tension, go for it. I find that I am rather hit or miss at it. Better with some yarn weights than others, and I have a tendency with sock weight yarn to tighten too much, for some reason. Some knitters get overenthusiastic about tightening as they go. It's a real pain to try to introduce the right amount of slack to reverse a graft that's too tight.
@andreamiller6200
@andreamiller6200 3 жыл бұрын
I know the universal answer is "swatch and see" :-) but I wonder if there is a principle to share about why the set up at the start (after passing the end stitches over) with purl on in front and knit on in back is needed? I have seen (and done) kitchener grafts omitting the set up and did not get holes, so I wonder what the set up is doing structurally.
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 3 жыл бұрын
The goal in either case (starting a graft with no set up vs using the pass over trick) is to angle the corners. The set up/final steps maintain the process of entering every stitch twice during the course of the graft, creating a vertical edge extension (the dog ears). Eliminating the setup changes the graft so that the first and last sts are only entered once, and that's what angles the corners. The pass over trick allows for the setup while also creating the angled corner. If you were grafting something with vertical edges all the way to the top (rather than the angled sides of a sock toe), you'd want to maintain that vertical edge and not create an angle.
