These composers have long been my heroes--and Bernard Herrmann--well, he remains my top favorite because of the way he musically connected with hidden emotion.

This very video which was on PBS when it was broadcast, was my introduction to Herrmann. I tuned in to see my then favorite, John Williams. I went 3 days later to Musicland and bought 3 LPs and he instantly became my favorite composer.

Joanie Adams I was very fortunate to be a friend and colleague [I produced 4 albums featuring his music] of Miklos Rozsa. He was a warm, caring and quite witty man.

Me too. I'm a fellow hungarian so for me it's particularly special to hear and see Rózsa talk. And with John Williams, my all time favorite composer. Amazing.

@@jslasher1 How wonderful! I wish I could have met Miklós Rózsa. At least I was lucky enough to meet John Williams, who is also an amazing person and a great composer.

@@jslasher1 Did you know that his last name Rózsa means rose in english? So in english his name is Michael Rose. But he never changed his original hungarian name and I respect him even more for it.

Bernard Herrman's favorite score was "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir," which for some reason did not surprise me when his daughter said this. In fact, I expecting she would say that. I watched "Wuthering Heights" this week and in the comment section on TCM someone observed how Alfred Newman's score just flowed naturally with the film, so deeply a part of it, and it does, and that is exactly what happens in "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir."

This is a brief segment from a PBS program called "Previn and The Pittsburgh" with this particular episode dedicated to film music. The interview was somewhat longer but John Williams' participation was more substantial than what is presented here.

I remember watching it. Williams performed portions from "Close Encounters" and spoke at length about his newest score for "Superman", which Previn lauded during the show.

I believe Rozsa helped Previn as a sort of mentor when the latter was young. John Williams played piano for a lot of films before he composed. He played for Previn and Mancini, for instance. John also credits Previn with helping him get work in Hollywood . I can't remember where I read it, but he said something like "Andre makes one phone call on your behalf and that's it, and things happen." Check this out. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bbaig8ahq5unonU.html

Interesting, but does Williams ever say anything? He was one of those talented piano players that was working around the studios at the same time Previn was. JW played for Mancini - for instance, the piano on Peter Gunn. But I think the earlier generation (like Rozsa) were really giants. Many wound up in Hollywood with the rise of Hitler and probably would have continued in the classical music tradition without the interruption to European culture of WWII. They made good money and had the safety of being in the US but think what else they could have written! And don't forget Korngold - another who wrote great movie music while still composing "serious" classical forms.

Looking further - the Previn family (who were Jewish) left Berlin in 1939 when Andre was 9 or 10 and moved to Hollywood where his great uncle was music director at Universal. And Andre received a Grammy in 2003 for Best Classical Crossover for an album of Korngold's movie music - The Sea Hawk and Captain Blood.

Bruce Kuehn John Williams also played piano for Jerry Goldsmith: Studs Lonigan (The cue of A Game of Pools is a highlight); and City of Fear. Jerry Goldsmith studied under Miklos Rozsa.

I think Williams let Rózsa talk out of respect. He is a very humble man and he had tremendous respect for Miklós Rózsa.

I don’t have the feeling that the film music knowledge is getting passed down from master to disciple as it once was. I hope I’m wrong, but when you no longer have studios with music departments then where do the younger up and coming composers learn? It used to be that the older guys (they were all men) could hand over orchestrations to the younger subordinates because there often wasn’t time to do it yourself. They wrote out all the parts by hand back then. The shear volume of music that got turned out every year made it a little like a factory but it was a great way to learn. And the music they created is obviously revered today.
