Howard Scott Warshaw the creator of Atari 2600 Yar's Revenge and E.T. had a fun panel at the 2022 Portland Retro Gaming Expo. Always a riot!

I think it's actually a decent game - especially for the short amount of time that HSW had to program this.

The resilient survive. The industry was so young there was a propagation delay in learning to become resilient in such a new world. Filling a young company with so many young people still learning to become resilient themselves exacerbates the propagation delay. This is one reason diverse companies do better. If resilience can't keep pace with changes occurring then survival is difficult (this is basically how he answers that guy's question). "Programmer's brain tries to think of all the exceptions". Sometimes this can be overwhelming or even impossible. I as a programmer myself, I have learnt to structure code and AI in such a way as to attempt to make it resilient to change itself, regardless of what that change may be. They don't really teach resilience in schools and lucky are the few that are taught it by their parents.

If I was there and got to ask a question, it would be for more details of what happened in the early parties. Were there even women there at the time?

I admire this sir From the review that I had seen when I was 10-12 I thought that et Atari was made by a group of people But then I found out he just made the game Obviously being more difficult to play the game And add that apart from making et he had to make another Atari game making it more difficult for him They literally gave him little time but even if I try But the truth that makes you angry is the fact that according to what they say: when the game obviously failed Atari literally blamed Howard For the failure of the game seriously... These guys thought that a game was made overnight... Obviously it was useless to blame another as if they were children because in the end, they will always be remembered as greedy idiots who made bad decisions They condemned their own company while Howard Scott Warshaw He will be remembered not only for being the creator of the worst game in history but for making other games

Yes, he also designed and programmed Yar's Revenge, one of the absolutely best games for the 2600.

@@CascadesHomestead Hi Seattleretroguy First of all, I'm sorry for replying late, I was actually thinking of writing this to you on January 1st, but I had forgotten because of the New Year's party. I remember Howard had made Yor Revenge, it's a fun game, I say this because I was able to play it through an Atari emulator. And the truth is that I always think this if Howard had been given more time to make the ET Atari game, I don't know if the best game in history but if one that is well remembered more than anything for the movie from 82 I hope you had a happy new year SeattleRetroGuy

@@raulpeloso7111 Happy New Year as well and agreed - with the right amount of time and less pressure by the (clueless) marketing folks ET could have been a good game.
