Yes, Lydia running away with someone who is in no way betrothed to her would ruin the family. It is heavily implied that when Lydia ran away with Wickham, it was to sleep with her, and if you do that before marriage, the woman is branded a harlot and all of her sisters would be seen as unmarriageable by proxy since "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" and in high society word of their ruin would be circulated quickly. Since the only way for any of the Bennet girls to survive in the world would be to marry advantageously (having no brother to inherit), they would not be able to get husbands because of what Lydia did with Wickham. Wickham was hoping to blackmail the Bennets for money by saying "I will marry Lydia and she will remain honorable to society if you pay me, if you refuse, I dump her and she and all of her sisters will be ruined" effectively leaving them homeless and penniless once Mr. Bennet dies. it's not unlike what he did to Darcy's sister, Georgiana, but Darcy managed to save Georgiana's virtue and reputation while also paying off Wickham to go away. Lydia wasn't so fortunate to have her virtue saved since she is very guileless and flirtatious, and the only solution was to marry Wickham to save her reputation.

Something I really appreciate about this movie is how the viewers perspective on Mr. Darcy constantly changes in the same speed as the one of Elizabeth does. In the beginning he is not likeable at all, and in the middle of the movie you start to notice how his behavior makes him quite an attractive man with a good soul. I just love how everything in this movie comes together

So this is what Darcy spent: To persuade Wickham to marry Lydia, Darcy must then pay Wickham's debts, totaling 1,000 pounds, or 80,000 dollars in addition to buying his commission at about 450 pounds or 36,000 dollars. And Darcy never expected or wanted Elizabeth to know so that she wouldn't feel indebted to him.

The scene where Lizzy is standing on the cliff was filmed at Stanage Edge in the Peak District in England and it is BEAUTIFUL! You can take a trail along the cliffs and the view and scenery it is absolutely worth the trip.

What I adore about this version is, that they took their time to set the tone through scenery. And they gave it all such a natural look. I like the BBC version but it feels a bit stiff sometimes and like a theatre play. In this movie they show the imperfections and underline the beauty of them. The people weren't always perfectly dressed up, their houses weren't all ready for a horde of foreign visitors. I really like that. And do you love the BBC mini series of Sense and Sensibility? It's one of my favourite adaptations of the Austen books.

Hi! I study British Literature and this is what I remember: So, during the Regency Era, which this is, women could not own property. So if Mr Bennet died, the property would go to the next male heir/landlord/etc, which is Mr Collins in this case, leaving all the daughters dependent on him to allow them to stay there, otherwise they would be in a very difficult situation. That's why Mrs Bennet is so set on getting her daughters married. Also, it was a huge deal when someone eloped, especially for younger sisters, since it put a stain on the family's reputation. If Lydia eloped with Wickham and then got dropped a few months later, probably after having adult fun time with him (and even if they didn't it would be generally assumed that they did), she would not have many marriage proposals in the future, if any at all, and neither would her unmarried sisters, especially Kitty and Mary. So Darcy paying for Lydia's wedding was literally saving the Bennets from all those issues. I wrote all this down from memory, it has been a while since I worked in the Regency Era context (my main focus in uni is the height and end of the Victorian period, so about 50-70 years later), so please correct me if I remembered anything wrong! Also, a personal annecdote: During one of my classes a few weeks ago we discussed toxic love stories, so things like 50 Shades and After, and we concluded that Hardin is a Wickham instead of a Bingley/Darcy and that Tessa should run xD 2005 Darcy is my favourite Darcy, even though I love Colin Firth and the 1995 version. It's the social awkwardness for me :D

Something I find interesting, Darcy doesn't realise he has been just as embarrassing as he states Elizabeth's parents and sisters were, he had acted in such a "manner" that she thought to herself 'I could never marry such a man' but he thinks so highly of himself that he doesn't recognise his own blunders and assumes she will fall at his feet. But when he finds out Lydia ran away with Wickham, he realises both his calibre of people and Elizabeth's are the same, at least the kids are.. just as flirty, naive, and easily infatuated. Of course he was learning of his misdeeds already by that point but I think it was a big turning point for him to see there is no difference between the rich and the poor.. well, less rich. If the kids can make the same mistakes then so can the adults.

I've watched this movie so many times. There's something so comforting about it. They picked the perfect actors for every role. Between the nonstop fantastic dialogue and the soft lull of that gorgeous piano music and beautiful sets and scenery it's just so dreamy.

This film changed my view of Mr Collins. He's not a bad man or a poor partner; he's just an average guy of he's era doing the best he can with what he's got. Plus Collins is earnest, honest, and fully devotes himself to his duties. Mr Collins is just unfortunately surrounded by "traditionally" better options. So, through that lens, Collins and Charlotte are a good match.

Mrs. Bennet is the OG Toxic Mom. Best South Asian Representation with no actual South Asians in the narrative 😂

Elizabeth wasn't intentionally judging Charlotte for accepting Collins; she just blurted it out in shock. It was hard for her to see it, even from her best friend's point of view, when she found him so revolting. Of course she and Charlotte wanted to remain friends, even if Collins was now a drag on things. whattayagonnado? I guess it's cute they show Charlotte growing fond of the twit. It really wasn't like that in the book.

The last scene is so weird to watch for me. I just recently discovered that the ending is different in Europe than the US. In Europe version there is no kissing, it ends with the laughter of Mr Bennet and I like that more actually :D

Okay, we need an Emma. (2020) reaction/commentart

So many things about this movie and the book: (i) dancing - the way people actually danced in this period is that there was a lot of "waiting time" so the dialogue in Jane Austen actually happened in that "waiting period" till it was the respective pair time to dance; (ii) it is speculated that Wickham would have never married Lydia without Darcy's intervention and that would very likely destroyed all other girls' chance at marriage (iii) when I was young and stupid I also judged Charlotte for marrying Mr. Collins, now years later I know that she did what she had to do. There is even a little sneaky line in the book that she arranged her household in a way that she spent only as much time with her husband as necessary (iv) I know that many people love this version but I can't help it, I still prefer BBC one. First, Colin Firth is the one and only Mr. Darcy for me, and second this movie version added some very cheesy elements (e.g. that very final scene, or the whole very dramatic set up of his first proposal) that I am not so fond of. But anyway, this is still very enjoyable version. (v) I highly recommend reading the book. For it being 200 years old, it is still very "fresh" and there are so many jokes that cannot be really translated into a movie version - Jane Austen had a very ironic sense of humor.

A fabulous movie and great reaction. Pemberley was filmed at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire - it’s the home of the Duke of Devonshire, my family lived there on one of the farms on the estate until 1997.

The cinematography is brilliant. I agree! It feels like a piece of art. They did well. Also, it was made by the producers of ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’. *SINGULARITY ACHIEVED*

When this came out on DVD, I watched it 5 times in 1 week. I was in college at the time and I think my roommate got sick of it. :P It's one of my hubby's favorites, though.

If you watch this movie with closed captions on, you can hear an entire conversation that I've always missed in the 100+ times I've seen the film. Its during the time when Lizzy is visiting Pemberly and they are looking at the sculptures. They talk about how kind Mr. Darcy is and how well he takes care of his staff.

Whe i see other men watch this movie it makes me so happy to say that I'm a diehard fan of this movie. Every thing about this movie is soo good, the screenplay, background music, camera work, cast. But most of all i love the background music is my favourite, i even have it downloaded in my phone (the 3 hours version) it's so calming and always makes me feel so good. Technically this is the better version of the book, but 1995 pride and prejudice series is the perfect adaptation of the book although i didn't really like some of the cast.

If you haven't seen it, you should check out "Lost in Austen." It's a 4 part miniseries of a modern woman who ends up transported into Pride and Prejudice, while Lizzie stays in the modern times. You follow the modern girl, not Lizzie, but it's a cute miniseries, that plays with the story a lot.

Loved this commentary. This version isn't bad but it's not my favorite one. One thing I think they did brilliantly is their take on Mr. Collins. He wasn't over the top awful so it was super believable and it made Lizzie's situation with the proposal all the more unnerving since you could see how her mom (and others) might insist on it with their financial situation..... Also, I hope you check out Jane Eyre. It's another classic.

To be honest, Mrs. Bennet didn't care who their daughters married as long as their married somebody before her husband dies, becuase they only had daughters and no sons to take the house because the house was wrapped up in an entailment which means that in order for the estate to not be split and sold somebody who used to own the house made it clear that up to a certain generation the house would only be inherited by the eldest son or the eldest male heir, that's why the house would go to the cloesest male heir, their cousin mr. Collins and that's why it was desireable for Elizabeth to marry him. And no, officers during that time weren't payed very well becuase their annual honorarium (that's their word for wages because they did want to earn something from the service but not to be considered as working men) was lower than the price they had to pay to be promoted to or enlisted in a position. But then again, men back then didn't join the army if they wanted money, the wanted titles like major or corporal and they had to both pay and serve for it. And yes, that scandal would ruin the whole family because back in those days a lady was not allowed to go anywhere on her own so you can only imagine how poorly they all thought of her when they found out she escaped with a man and traveled with him god knows where. And it would ruin the family because that gossipt would put a black mark on the family forever making sure none of the other daughters would get married, or at least married well and they needed to be married to have the right to keep their house after the father's death so if what Lydia did would not have been resolved by Darcy, it would cause them to lose everything because of Lydia's silly actions. EDIT: I know this sounds snobbish, I just have a lot of info about the regency period in the back of my mind because I research it sometimes when creating characters. I hope you don't think I'm doing anything other than sharing what I know and answering some of the questions you might have.

This particular adaptation isn't my favorite, but I was delighted to see you react to it. I won't say you look like Mr. Bingley, but I will say that actor plays a laughably loathsome character in "Penelope", with James Mcavoy and Christina Ricci, and I'd really like to see you react to that!
