Mr. Darcy's first proposal to Elizabeth Bennet in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley

Darcy: Insults her, admits breaking her sister heart, criticizes her family, then proposes Me: Yeah that's not going to work...
@olaasem90866 жыл бұрын
It did work actually lol
@eme.2616 жыл бұрын
It didn't work. What did work was him demonstrating, through his actions, how wonderful a man he actually was. He not only adjusted his mannerisms and his mistaken opinions, he went out of his way to help her family, due to the depths of his feelings for her. Then, he re-proposed, laid his heart at her feet-- gently and lovingly-- and that time his proposal was successful.

He tried to kiss her in a subtle movement if I noticed correctly but she didn't move backwards. In her heart surely there was something sweet towards him even in her anger. Excellent acting.

Yes she looks at his lips at 3:47 as he’s leaning towards her as if she’s waiting for him to kiss her. Good acting. They have resentments towards one another but there’s a simmering attraction underneath it all

I think even though this adaptation of the novel left out some really important scenes and a lot of dialogue, it is still my favorite adaptation of a Jane Austen novel ever. If you watch it without too much of a regard to the actual book, it is quite a piece of art. The music is beautiful and I love the actors. I think Matthew MacFadyen has done an amazing job at portraying Mr. Darcy.

Kathrin Erika I endorse every word of yours. the facial expression body language of the two is remarkable. it's a pity that the scene where the two walk to the surprise of her family holding hand was deleted also the two outside pembaly after wedding enjoying the greenary

Kathrin Erika. although the storyline is curtailed.one needs to let loose our imagination. when Darcy invites gardinar to fishing just watch lizzys surprise look at him .he accepted her family as is after humiliating her.she realises he is sacrificing just to win her. that's love. This scene alone should've earned Matthew Best Actor nominations. Even the way his voice rose - to a shrill at one point, I might add - and fell is stellar. I'm surprised he didn't get a single nomination. Love this movie forever!
@andrewaucoin78852 жыл бұрын
Honestly he just didn’t have enough screen time to warrant a best actor nod and it would’ve felt out of place to give him a supporting actor bid. He did amazing but just don’t think he was able to amass a large enough body of work in this single film to garner any prestigious nominations.

“And how about Mr Wickam?” Darcy’s jealousy breaches the dam! Oh Lizzy! You just waved red in front of a bull!!
@stephaniegreenwood40072 жыл бұрын
I love how the thunder seems to be caused by Lizzie’s anger. As if she is a goddess that has control over the elements. I’m pretty sure this was filmed in an actual rainstorm, which, holy cow makes the timing of the thunder so incredible, organic, and just flat out lucky. Darcy insults Lizzie’s family, she fumes, and the storm grows, he insults her father, lightning crashes. It is so powerful and so electric. I also love how complex and intense the conflicting emotions are in this scene. Their clashing emotions are also reflected by the clashing storm. Darcy has become so smitten with Elizabeth that he has finally reached the point of that he is willing to giving up life as he knows it. He has already fought through the struggle of society expecting him to marry the perfect women, whom he never found, and instead has decided to make his own decisions and marry the women he loves despite the fact that society will not approve of the match. Now he is finally taking the plunge to tell her his feelings and ask her to marry him. He was nervous to death, but he never expected that he could be rejected by her. She was a woman, he was a man, she was middle class, he was upper class, she had no wealth of her own, and she had no way to earn her own wealth, he was a millionaire. As soon as her father died she would become homeless, unless she found a husband first. And here he was. He is basically telling her that she has just one the lottery, and yet she refuses him. Not only does she turn him down, but she is fuming angry at him, and even seems to despise him. How could they woman he love, possibly despise him. He never realized that his failings to recognize her humanity, would hurt her so deeply that she would despise him. He never realized that his failing to show his emotions for her would leave her unsuspecting of his feeling for her. He also never realized that he needed to build a relationship with her first by building trust, respect and love, that would require hard work and self sacrifice. She would never love or accept a man who didn’t see her or her family as human beings of equal value. Elizabeth is caught up in conflicting emotion because she is so insulted by this man who has treated her with both indifference, and prejudice and he doesn’t even believe her sister good enough for his friend. Up until this moment she thought that he didn’t even like her. Now to her shock he wants to marry her. She had never thought of him romantically before because he acted as if she was beneath him. Why would she form an interest in someone romantically if they didn’t even respect her as an equal human. Now for the first time, his real feelings for her are revealed, the good and the bad, and she despises him for the bad, but he is also showing her affection, and vulnerability for the first time. That is magnetic and intense, even though it was brief. This is honestly the first time she even considers him as a romantic partner, but it is also at the same moment that she is furious with him (which she should be), and it is also the moment that she denies him as a romantic partner. The story could have ended here. But she was so intrigued by this one moment of affection and the electricity between them, and he was so in love with her that he was willing to learn from this experience give up all of the false beliefs society had taught him about human superiority vs inferiority, make self sacrifices and acts of love for her and her family, so that he and the woman he loved could be equals so that she can have the freedom to love him too.
