In respects of marrying all her daughters away, I have to defend Mrs Bennet. It was hinted in the movie but Mr Bennet really messed up. He hoped for a male heir and didn't take any measures to provide money/save money for his daughters in case there wasn't a male heir. So in order to not end up on the streets after Mr Bennet dies and Mr Collins gets their house, the daughters really need to get married well. And they all don't really have anything to recommend them. Their father didn't even get them an education, the have no society training, nothing.

I should have read your comment because I just left a comment saying the same thing so mine was kind of repetitive. But I just found a story so fascinating because of the fact that he was really neglectful and he had one line to Elizabeth remember at the end after Lydia comes back where he becomes self-aware. He tells Elizabeth basically that he knows he has been a bad father but to be honest he doesn't think he's going to really get any better and he's just probably going to continue being a bad one. It was funny and at the same time kind of messed up but real because we're as human beings were still like that.

@@firebrandsgirl Exactly. His character brings a lot of wit to the story (more so in the book) but mostly it is to the expense of others. It's well done. You laugh about a joke of his, but when you think about it, you think: wait a damn minute...

@@Marielusi yeah pretty much everyone if it's jokes. He was being a jerk. I'm almost half a century and Mr. Bennett reminds me of people that I knew and know. And I look back on it, I was a Mr Bennett. Just not to children though. Mr Bennett came down on Mary one time and I know the big point is supposed to be the Mary wasn't a smart as she pretended to be. But you know Mary was a 16-year-old girl and playing surrounded by four pretty sisters. She was just trying to be good at something. And it turned out her dad didn't even think she was smart. And Kitty was only silly because she was second best to Lydia. Woah after all these years I'm still finding something interesting about that book.
@Marielusi

@@firebrandsgirlYes, Mr Bennet calls all his girls silly, but I always understood Mary as somebody who isn't pretty but driven and smart. But she is lost. Because nobody tells her what to read, what to learn. Nobody probably told her that she is good the way she is. So she sees her pretty sisters and is terrified that she has nothing to recommend her to a suiter. So she tries to gives herself an education. But without guidance it turns out to be only a collection of threadbare phrases. And because she isn't regulated, her tries to seem accomplished make her look pretentious and pushy. And it is hinted that she would have taken Mr Collins if he had asked her but Austen states that the difference between him an her is that he is a small, simple man whose education was lost on him and she is actually intelligent but never got an education.

@@Marielusi Yes, I used to feel bad for Mary. I related to her when I was young. You like the smart guy, but he doesn't seem to know that you exist and all of who you are hinges on that "relationship. " But now, as an older woman, I understand how it would have been horrible for her. I liked Mr. Collins and I think he worked well with Charlotte. She knew how to guide him. How to talk to him. But, I feel that his indifference to Mary would have to broken her spirit.

It's so understated, but in that scene at the church, where Fitzwilliam is telling Lizzie how Darcy broke Jane and Bingley up, he was trying to be a wingman for Darcy 😭He was telling Lizzie was a loyal friend he is😭He knew his cousin wanted to marry her and he was trying to talk him up 😭Can you imagine how embarrassed he was later when Darcy told him how it went??? Also...I kind of have to defend Mr. Collins. He's really IS trying to do the Bennets a favor. If he's married to a Bennet sister, than he and his wife would be in the position to take care of the others. He's not particularly interested in romance (yet). In another story, he'd be the hero. I beg to differ....Collins is the worst kind of self-interested opportunist and total bougie with unearned entitlement....which might be forgivable but his authoritarian judgement over others less fortunate disqualifies him from the pulpit or any other position to judge over others (see his cruel advice on Lydia). His total lack of awareness of his false modesty, sycophancy & bad manners aimed at those in power is exactly like a comic book villain.
@G1NZOU
@G1NZOU 7 ай бұрын
I agree, he's ridiculous, and has a ton of flaws like his impertinence and lack of awareness of his self-aggrandising. But he has some redeemable qualities. That's what makes Austin so great, her characters actually feel like people with motives and she satirises the element of ridiculous which most people in society unfortunately fall into to some degree or other, but you can relate to even the slightly unlikable ones. While I like the movie I think the 1995 series, by nature of its length, shows more of the bad side of Mr Collins that we don't see in the 2007 movie, especially his false modesty and brown nosing.
@gattaca5911

@@G1NZOU I agree...except "he has some redeemable qualities." All badly executed flummery for personal gain and position. If he had any kind of integrity he would have chosen Mary as a partner...obvious like personalities, but Charlotte is more willing to play a role to help him in his advancement so they clap a deal. His "christian" advice to Mr Bennet on how to deal with Lydia is monstrous and foreshadows how he will pontificate over his clergy in cruel judgement. Comically evil character by Austen but cliche for her time I suspect.

The Bennets are not a "blue-collar" family. Mr. Bennet is a moderately wealthy landowner and the Bennets are part of the landed gentry, making them upper-class. Only Mrs. Bennet came from a middle-class background. Her father was a lawyer. Charles Bingley is also middle-class, since his wealth came from trade. This is how class was in Britain before World War 1.

Jane Austen is the best. The hand scene is not in her book although it’s a lovely romantic touch. The Bennett’s are landed gentry so of the same class as Darcy and technically of an even higher class than Bingly till he buys his own estate - but the girls and Mrs Bennett can’t inherit the Bennett’s estate which is entailed because of laws at the time. The book and all of Jane Austen is so worth reading! 💖 I appreciate that none her villains or characters suffer or are punished for long. She never dwells in misery. It’s a window into another time which is always fun.

About 'The hand thing": back then, touching other people, specially someone of the opposite sex, was tabu. There were a time and a place for it. Such as dancing. That was the first time Darcy touched her and he was SHOOK!! hahaha He also couldn't wait to jump in and help her. The whole scene just shows how much of a gentleman he is and how much he cared about her already.

I think the scene where Elizabeth sees Darcy and his sister hug is uncomfortable bc at that time she doesn’t know it’s his sister. I mean, she knew he had a sister. The reason it's super uncomfortable is that she strayed out of the public areas of the house (ie the picture and statue gallery and ballroom etc) into the private family rooms. Plus the last time she saw him was the whole proposal/letter part. She has been told how she was prejudiced and hasn't really apologised and then she's not only in his house, but he's there, and she's where she isn't supposed to be. In the book it's only the "the last time was a failed proposal" awkwardness, but that's still super uncomfortable.

This soundtrack in Hawaii??? GENIUS. I sneak songs from it onto my Spotify playlists ALL the time.. This is definitely one of my top 5 films of all time, and my second favorite novel of all time (second only to Austen's "Persuasion"). I hate that people who are not Austen fans pretty much skipped this, but seeing people genuinely enjoy it is something I LOVE. Most people I try to show it to end up falling asleep or just not understanding anything and the whole thing is ruined by me having to explain the contextual history and why a lot of it is actually so intelligent and witty and down right scaracastic. Gah! I just love this adaptation. If you know nothing of Jane Austen or P&P... THIS is the movie to watch.

Such a great reaction! You three were fun to watch this with. Enjoyed how Grace and Jamie gave Alex a hard time, but he took it well and went with it, and embraced it anyway. As a guy, this is one of my most favorite films of all time, seen it many times, and yes, the soundtrack is singularly great, and yes, I listen to it on occasion as well. Loved watching Grace anticipate and then react to all the great parts and lines right along with me, and also watching the two newcomers react for the first time to all the emotional and story twists and turns, while trying to figure it all out (and Grace watching them as well, and not trying to give anything away about how things work out). It's just nice seeing folks like yourselves who allow yourselves to engage with a film with both your heart and your head, and especially when it is such a film as this which is such a wonderful choice since it does so well at drawing you in. Will look forward to more reactions with you all!

Can I just say... Alex's understated expressions, Jamie's over the top reavtion, and Grace's quiet excitement made the best combo. Just a quick little tip or two: There is an 8 hour mini-series which is more faithful to the book. Not saying this is a bad version. But a movie is only so long and necessarily has to cut things out. If you are looking for more like this, Jane Austin wrote other beloved stories. There's Emma, Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, and Mansfield Park. They are all pretty good. Another I put in a similar catagory is Jane Eyre. It was written by Charlotte Bronte and I'd call it a gothic romance. Jane Austin has a curious take on people and writes her characters very well. I fell in love with Pride and Prejudice whrn I was 14. I was introduced to the mini-series and immediately had to read the book. While I understand the appeal of Mr. Darcy, he's not my favorite of the heroes in the titles I have listed above.

Lizzie and Darcy are in the same social class, and the Bingleys are slightly below the Bennets socially because their money came from trade and they don't own land (yet). The hand thing is, people did not have physical contact in society. Physical contact would be scandalous to your reputation. Your reputation & your family’s. That’s why Lydia running off with Wickham was a REALLY BIG DEAL. Property didn’t pass down to women. Instead, if there was no son to inherit it would pass to the next living male relative. Women had no say & the best way to help your family would be to marry up. Jane marrying Bingley would’ve placed the other 4 daughter’s meeting upper class men. When Mrs Bennett tells Lizzie about having 5 daughter’s with NO chance of providing a dowry for each it IS a problem to HER. The 2nd hand scene where he doesn’t take her hand it’s significant bcuz he laid bare his soul & she rejected him, bcuz she didn’t know the whole truth. Now, visiting HIS home, she sees WHAT he was offering & how much of an embarrassment he would endure for her. Now, it’s too late…… Grace, you’re NOT alone in subjecting your friend’s to watching this. My friend of 40 years & I each picked a movie at Blockbuster. I chose this, she chose The Dark Knight. I can help a little here! It was not a matter of women not being able to inherit at all, there were many heiresses (see, Emma from another Jane Austen's novel as an example), but that some properties had certain requirements for who could inherit them. So evidently someone in the past of the Bennet's family decided that their property could only be inherited by a man, so that's why it falls to Mr. Collins as the closest male relative. Lady Catherine's property didn't have such restrictions so that's why she was able to own it. Ellie Dashwood's channel has a far better explanation of this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ibZ2mKVjx7WzXWQ.html And I would also recommend "Is the family Bennet poor?" from her to understand a little bit more of the family's situation. Well, Ellie's whole channel is fantastic, but those videos particularly helped me a lot to understand Pride and Prejudice much more. Sorry for the long comment!

And even with an estate that's entailed to a male heir you can still take the profits from that estate and save them up for a rainy day and dowries (well, not if you only own the estate for a short time or you get an estate that is already in debt). It's just that Mr Bennet did not save enough money for his daughters or his estate doesn't make enough profit for him to save enough. In the book it's mentioned it's mostly the first.
