I was born and raised in SF, graduated from HS in ‘82. I recall the vibrant community of the 70’s as a kid and came out two years before this. This era was gonna be “my moment”. That turned out quite differently... but I’m still alive. Sometimes I am quite amazed, considering all the people I lost in those early years. One thing young gays might not get is how much of a community it was. The Castro was it’s own village. All the shops, restaurants, bars were gay owned and operated. It was a safe space unlike anything that exists today. I hardly recognize it now.

Isn't that a good thing? Gays are now omnipresent all over the city. They aren't confined to a "pink ghetto" any longer. I believe that reflects how much they have been accepted by the entire city.

It’s kind of interesting that no mention was made of “Kaposi’s” or “Pneumocystis” because it had definitely hit by the time this aired.

This is a fascinating look at gay history and politics in San Francisco in the early 1980s right before AIDS devastated the community. Many of the gay community leaders of that era are in this documentary.

Our Journey Mommy and Mamas I’m from SF and I graduated from HS in ‘82. It would soon get a lot worse from this point. I remember the huge obituary sections in the gay paper (the Bay Area Reporter), I recall seeing someone out and about and then reading that they were dead a few weeks later. I remember men barely 30, frail as 90 year olds, covered in purple KS lesions... and so much more. It was a frightening time and place to be a young gay man. A reliable test was years away at this point and everyone was paranoid and just assumed they were going to die.

I was 17 and totally out back in 82. It was great that AIDS wasn't really around but I remember a lot...a LOT of homophobia back then. That really didn't stop until recently. I lived in SF from 1991-1996 and had 55 anti-gay things happen to me in that time; mostly by the homeless and out of towners.

Oh, AIDS was most *definitely* "around* in 1982; the death rate just hadn't risen that high *yet.* The virus incubates in the body for years before you start to show symptoms. Most of the people who died of it in the mid-to-late '80s almost certainly already had the virus in them in 1982; they just didn't know it yet.

There is still a very big stigmatized presence against the LGBT Community, here in South Africa ! It is rather disappointing and pathetic, that South Africa has not moved on with the times ! 😲

@MagnusPaul1976
@MagnusPaul1976 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheAlfredPlatform Yes it is legal and I agree with you on that one 💯 ! But, there are a number of regions in South Africa, where the Communities project some degree of scepticism. Take my city, for example... There are no gay clubs in the city centre, as this is outlawed or banned. We used to have a gay club, a fair distance on the outskirts of the city, but it had been closed down a while back. There are too many people living here with strict conservative views. And it is not only here, where this is a major issue... There are other cities in South Africa too, that fall under this category !
