Primary and secondary cells are two types of batteries. This lecture defines primary and secondary cells, explains the difference between them, and gives examples of each. I also go over the movement of charge inside primary and secondary cells.

Hi sir, can you start to post videos regarding the HL Physics part of the syllabus? Ie, topics 9-12 and the engineering option. That would be very much appreciated.

just a quick question, in the first chart you have examples for both primary and secondary cells, both refer to zinc-carbon cells... anything im missing?

A mistake on my part, zinc-carbon cells are only primary cells.

0:15 Zinc -carbon cells are not rechargeable. Lead-acid, nickel cadmium, nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) and lithium-ion cells are.

Hey, you said in your video about Voltage in 5.1 that the terminology of Electrical Potential and Electrical Potential Energy often get mixed up and that electrical potential energy is equal to work done and electric potential is equal to Voltage. However in this video you say devices add electrical potential energy which you use synonymously with Voltage. Which is correct? Thank you

Voltage is "electrical potential energy per unit charge." Here I say the battery "adds electrical potential energy to charges" which means that each charge that passes through receives some potential energy. The voltage of the battery is the total energy added per charge. Another way of thinking about this: Let's say I give 5 dollars to everyone who walks into my building. The money is like the energy, and the people are like the charge. I'm giving $5/person, so the "voltage" in this situation is $5/person, and the "energy" is the total money I've given away to all the people I've encountered. The battery does something similar, it gives a set amount of energy to each charge that passes through, and the ratio energy added/charge equals the battery's voltage.
