Its not about learning how to cold start, or how to properly land, or correct radio brevity. Its about the realism, the adrenaline, and the stakes, Because when jester and the RWR is screaming in your ear, and you can see the missiles flying at your face, you can bet your heart will begin to thump in your chest.

I have both VR and IRheadtracker. Personally I like the headtracker but both are great for DCS. Infact some could say an IRtracker or VR is required for DCS considering much much you have to look around and constantly looking back down in your cockpit.

"Sometimes, you don't win all your engagements. All you can do is take down as many as you can with you, even though in the end? You were never going to make it out alive..." Is truly a chilling quote, it sounds like the intro to the final chapter of a hero's story. I stop by this video every once in a blue moon because The Prowler's theme combined with DCS just hits so hard.

This is why I play DCS. That 1 hour of serenity flying into the AO, then 1 minute where all hell breaks loose. And then flying all the way back to homeplate at 30K feet, cruising, amazed that I actually survived, elated that I'm heading home, chatting with my wingman, admiring the moon and tense because I suck at landing at night hahaha. So much emotion, so much immersion.

I liked that last comment. Funnily enough just a couple of days ago I was playing on one of the 4ya servers doing CAP in the Tomcat. Took out three bandits BVR in TWS with my phoenixes (I'd gone for four pohenix, two Sparrows and two sidewinder), then another group of four bandits popped up, grouped closely enough that a sparrow shot would leave me dangerously vulnerable. But I was the only person up in their way and retreating would leave a pair of warthogs who'd probably been flying half an hour to get to the AO sitting ducks. I suck at bfm, doubly so in the Tomcat where I end up either spinning or snapping my wings. But I could buy the 'hogs a few minutes as a distraction so I dove on in anyway. No cover, just a flat desert. Survived far longer than I had any right to somehow and even took an Su-33 down with me. I really hate throwing planes away, so it was a real conscious decision that I'm not coming back but I'll make as good a distraction as possible.

If you're breaking off your wings or going into spins easily, you're over-controlling the aircraft. The Cat is a bit temperamental with hard control inputs, especially at high speeds or transitioning from them. Try to focus on using less stick at first or easing into a maneuver. I started to get a fairly manageable aircraft when I started treating it like a lady. Once you reprogram yourself for that, you'll need to learn the ways it likes to chase. As designed, it likes a lag pursuit, keeping the target you're chasing just above the canopy spar. This keeps the speed up and gives you just enough to pull a hard nose-on when they get frustrated and make a stupid move.

Hello. I dislike pinning my own comments, but after receiving a lot of hate daily for the last several months, I'd like to address some things. I don't blame those who do not care. For the first seven months, this video didn't get any attention. *I was not planning on the video getting this many views.* At the time of creation, the idea came to me at complete random. And after several months of a writers block, I had nothing left to lose by slapping together a cut, a script, some music, and posting it. "Not like anyone will care, right?" was the motto, here. Not once did I create this thinking "aw yea this is the best thing I'm gonna ever create and people are gonna love it." Trust me, I've poured more than enough time into content creation to know how this works. To explore ones own passions and try new things is how you expand your skill set, and that's exactly what I was doing here. Far far from perfect or good imho, but if you enjoy it I'm happy I can supply that for you. I had never once done anything like this at the time, so everything here is completely over the top, very dramatic, and not fleshed out. At all. I'm not saying DCS is my life blood, I'm saying it's pretty fun in a very dramatic way. Yes, that's an opinion. Yes you're allowed to disagree. Plenty of people do. If you came to the comments in hopes to advise me how the video is bad, *_I am well aware, thanks._* Hit the dislike, that's why it's there. I'm not going to take a dislike personally. I am going to take several comments a day telling me, without construct, that I am bad as a human being, a little bit personally. I say it in all my descriptions, *_I read every single comment._* So reading these specifically every single day gets depressing. In hopes to clear a little bit of that up, I have provided what context is needed here. So please, if you desire to write a one word hate comment, spare me and your keyboard. I couldn't care less about the YT algorithm taking less interest by telling people to stop commenting these. I do not create videos for fame. If you came here to describe my personal life in a harsh tone based on 2 dramatic minutes of DCS flying, have a lovely day, and don't. Sorry for the essay. Thanks. *_Edit 2/3/2023_* A ton of this stuff has subsided, so thank you to all those that have came, listened, and read. I duly appreciate it. As such, I will be unpinning this comment and returning the top comments to their respected chosen places. Cheers, RV

It's as good as the pilot's seat when it comes to adrenaline, that's for sure

DCS like Arma is so / can be so rewarding because the action is surrounded by a lot of setup and calmness. If you would spawn strait into the fight, dogfight a few enemies, get killed and restart it would not be as thrilling. But if you go into a fight and you know you already invested an hour of your time and if you die it will take an hour again, the stakes are higher.

Sadly that isn't what DCS is about. The online gameplay is mainly pvp where it is instant action, and that means get up, launch missiles and land for rearming, repeat. The DCS really required a penalty for being hit and shot down. Now it is 3 min repair and 2 min rearming. We need at least 240-480 min repair depending damage. And 60 min rearming for West planes and 30 min for red. Then each base have limited number of planes, like 15 fighters, 10 helicopters and so on. If you get shot down, your ED account is denied to fly for 12 hours or sooner if a helicopter pilot perform SAR by picking up your virtual pilot and return it successfully back to your original base. You might return from fly by successful landing, but you can jump to another plane after 10 min briefing and all. Then the fight would turn interesting as you don't want to return too soon, but never return as damaged and you really don't want to be shot down. As well every pilot would be assigned maximum amount of missiles for a day from the base warehouse. Like 4-6 per day. Every single sortie would matter, and every single missiles would be meaningful. But players don't want it, as they have no skills to tolerate losses and think that they should be free to risk planes and ammunition just for sake of fun. And that makes DCS so unrealistic.

Nice, what got you at the end? I have learned that staying out of afterburner when dropping flares is actually modeled in the game and increases their effectiveness. I also have learned over time that AI don’t seem to use radar guided missiles when they are within Fox-2 range (at least, when they haven’t run out, I think). I know I’m sort of cheating, but it generally means that I only have to drop flares and there’s no need to try notching when there’s a bandit in close. What that means is I tend to be more aggressive about turning into bandits that are close and firing at them. Another cheap trick is that all the Russian missiles can be decoyed easily (make sure your ECM is off, because they do have HOJ capabilities) when in a notch (Fox-1) and outside of AB (Fox-2). Again it’s kind of cheap, but I play to get the opponents to run out of missiles and also save my own to get shots off at them once we close in. The objective is to survive and take away their advantage before a merge, so that I still have room to maneuver. If everything goes well (odds aren’t great, but 65-70% of the time), I can splash the first with a missile like you did and then kill the second in a merge-usually with guns. I often do this on MP vs AI servers and have been fortunate enough to get up to a 4 v 1 in a Tomcat. The circumstances matter, where the more staggered from altitude, distance, and bearing the enemies are, the greater the probability of killing them all. Against players, these strategies don’t work. People adapt and use all sorts of non-standard tactics, but we (self included) are all super prone to wasting missiles on sub-par shots or, conversely, overcommitting when we can just evade and come back. Anyway, I hope someone finds this to be helpful.
@Romeovictor
@Romeovictor 2 жыл бұрын
Lots of great advice, but let me clarify some things: 1. With evading Fox 2s, the best chance you got is by minimizing your own heat signature and dropping flares, while being *Fast*. Getting out of burner and into idle power minimizes the hottest thing's heat signature's on your aircraft: your engines. It was a while back, but if I remember correctly, an R73 got me in the end because I was slow, but I was in min and dropping flares. *It does not always work, and sometimes fox 2s will just go for you no matter what.* 2. In BVR and Dogfights, there is no such thing as "being cheap" or "cheating", there are those that are clever and adaptive, and those who are targets. 3. Make sure your ECM is *_ON_* against fox 1s, or any type of radar guided things. HOJ capabilities exist, but all HOJ does is display the direction the Jamming is coming from. Jamming allows an aircraft to conceal its range from the HOJ radar, which is better because you want to give your enemy _less_ information about where you are, not more. They will have no ranging information, which means they wont know for certain when to take a shot. At about 25-40 miles, the radar will burn through the jam, depending on the radar and target, at which point all ranging information will be displayed. 4. Against Russian designs like the flankers in the video, the objective should *not be to survive until a merge.* The reason is because that will cost a ton of fuel and time. And on a mission where your objective is to hit a ground target, youre gonna want as much fuel as you can take. Normally an F14 would slap all three of these flankers at about 30 miles with the phoenix, but I was, for lack of better terms, jumped by what I thought was only one, and turned out to be a few more than 1, which drove me into the dirt and death. Ideally, against a flanker, NATO designs hold BvR capabilities above them with better data integration (datalink and radars) and better weapons systems overall (AMRMAAM, Phoenix, HMCS, AIM9Xs, etc). If possible, you should lock in TWS, fire a longer range fox 3 as sneakily as possible, and then kill him without having to merge at all. It costs the least fuel to do this, the least amount of missiles, and the least amount of time. Even if your first shot is evaded, you should be pressing for a second, because you want to keep him on the defensive, close the distance, and kill him, without actually merging. Merging with Russian designs, who will almost 100% of the time have HOB missiles, great airframes for dogfighting, and loads of fuel, is not a good idea, *especially if you are laden with external fuel tanks, bombs, or really any extra weight at all.* Now, its not a death sentence if you merge with a russian design, but it does usually mean your entire mission is gonna go out the window, especially if you have to jettison weight (ie any bombs or fuel tanks that you needed to complete your initial mission) to be competitive in a merge. Many NATO designs are excellent dogfighters as well, but dogfighting in itself is very detrimental to an overarching mission. Exciting, yes, fun, yes, but useful to a real mission? Not really. Even where your mission is CAP, and your job is to clear the skies, getting into a merge means youre going to be burning lots of fuel, which means you are going to have to land sooner, which means that whatever air space you are guarding will become vulnerable to enemy air sooner, and if youre escorting something, then you might have to leave them completely defenseless because you didnt have the fuel to stay up and escort them back home. Sorry if this is a ton, but DCS and Air combat are nothing if not complex, and there are a ton of important details that should be considered if you want to be as good as you can be.

If you want to get into it deeper the logical first step is the FC3 pack. If you want to get a high definition plane, i can reccomend the F-5. Old plane, no BVR capability whatsoever, modern jets will eat it alive. But it is so much fun to fly, not that complex and easy to learn, and compared with the Su-25 in air to air it is god, very nimble lightweight plane and fast enough if you have time to accalerate (mach 1.6 up high). You can still defeat any modern jet if you manage to ambush. No autopilot, the radar sucks, underpowered, two missiles and two cannons, only very little countermeasures - all in all its all about that pilot shit, no computers to take your hand :)

It'll be down to every pilots personal opinion. Swipe in Track for sure, but now you've got to get used to moving your eyes to parts of the screen and moving you head in completely different directions, even if its small, its unnatural. To many like myself, too unnatural. Smeared picture yes, but since its VR, and not a flat screen, you dont see it, as your pupils are now focused on each individual object you look at. Peripheral vision isnt as focused as your converged vision. If you want to see the smeared object in focus, you simply look at it, and it becomes clear. Large neck movements for sure, but large neck movements even give pilots a better indication of where their plane is in relation to themselves when looking across the circle. Neck bent really far? Nose is not on. Neck bent barely? Nose is getting closer. I'd say VR gives a large advantage in terms of spotting, as the pixels are shoved right up to your eyes and there aren't as many to sort through to find something, its super easy to keep visual on a target even twenty miles away, and in the merge, its very obvious where the bad guy is, as he's the only moving pixel in relation to everything else, where as TrackIR all the pixels move on your screen in relation to you. There are ups and downs to both, and one could make arguments for each case. Personally I simply prefer VR.

I don’t see why the video would create a harshness. Looks like someone playing a fun game having a great time🤙🏼

Could I get some assistance, I just downloaded DCS on my computer. Will it configure with Oculus quest 2 and how?

Not with ease, but it can be done via virtual desktop or an oculus link cable. Not sure if DCS is on oculus itself, but you can always go through steam and steam VR.

DCS is really addictive, when you crest a hill in an F-16 and come up on a SA15 and reinact package q unwillingly is probably the thing that keeps bringing me back

For me the most fun part of dcs is getting to learn a new plane. From the first time you get inand push random buttons to try to start the engines to sitting inside your trusty plane and knowing every buttons function.
