This style trap can also be made larger or smaller, depending on what you're after and if your using it in a narrow stream you can fashion a "funnel" from rocks or branches to help lead the fish into the trap. The American Indians, as well as other peoples globally, used this style trap for millenia with great success. Great video!

use the guts of your catch as bait next time, and you might get more fish than you know what to do with. works wonderfully.

I made baskets and fish traps the same way in the 80's when living in the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico. Except I used the bark from the saplings as the ties to hold it together. That way, all the materials come from nature. And in my traps I tied the ends together at the closed end, instead of cutting them off. Great to see others know how to do this primitive way of fishing! :)

Great video. Your nonverbal style during the construction phase reminds me of Primitive Technology, and it's something I like about his videos. It makes it easier for us to just focus on watching what you're doing without listening to a description at the same time, which is nice since narrated descriptions are often either redundant or distracting. For people talking about his use of premade string and metal pliers and cutters, here's how I look at it: those are things that obviously have more primitive counterparts, but the differences are insubstantial. How much difference would it really make if he used handmade string instead of purchased cord? None, really. Certainly not for the purposes of this video. Would it have been kind of cool? Yes. But what's important here is the trap. That's what we came to see, I think. Stop giving him a hard time about it.
