I will show you how to create a primitive tool, a replica bone harpoon used by Native Americans to spear fish. Caveman tools!

I show how hunter-gatherers would attach a bone to a wooden spear using pine pitch composed of bees wax, pine sap, and charcoal. I then wrap it with elk sinew from the back of the animal to create a very strong bond. Once dry, sinew turns rock hard! The bone was made by Jay Valente as a replica from a museum from Connecticut depicting a Native American scene. It was ground by hand using flint and sandstone.
The hand made stone axe is ground rare pink granite. This would have been used to crush shells, finish animals or fish or caveman chopping of wood.
To see the diorama with the harpoon replica, visit: www.pequotmuseu...
ABOUT JAY VALENTE - CUSTOM STONE TOOLS!
The stone tools including the bone harpoon tip were produced by Jay of Vision Quest Outdoors by hand. He even sent me pine pitch and elk sinew!
Facebook: www.facebook.c...
Etsy: www.etsy.com/c...
KZfaq: / @wildernessquestoutdoors
I cut the spear pole with a hand made stone axe and remove the bark using a stone knife.
I use the mullein plant stock (a large weed) for the hand drill combined with a poplar hearth board. I carved the notch with a flat stone I found on the spot in the forest. Other tools like the flint was send to me by Jay of Vision Quest Outdoors.
The fish basket was made by live dogwood weaved to hold the fish at the proper height. It was mounted with two v-shape sticks found in the woods.
This is re-wilding, back to nature, nature reconnect or "forest bathing" if you prefer!
This is how you use the entire animal!
Earlier people would certainly have done this style of catch and cook over open fire.

GamingWith Matthew it is possible but chicken bones are known to splinter. Maybe they would be usable as a primitive sewing needle but I'd cure it in Borax for at least a couple months first.

Dale Chatfield the little bone next to the drumstick could be used for a sowing needle (not for thin fabrics, tho, but like, loosely knitted wool), or even for a dart. But you gotta let it dry first.

I really enjoy these primitive videos! I think it should be a requirement in school instead of physical education(same difference) but adds more life survival to the concept. I was never into sports so P.E. was my most disliked class. But if my teacher woulda told me I was gona spear fish, make primitive tools & learn to live off nothing? I woulda been top of my class. Fortunately, I grew up learning these things. Most kids dont. Great video bro 👍😎🌎🎣

Josh Busby I agree entirely
@LeahMcNeir
@LeahMcNeir 6 жыл бұрын
I agree too! Primitive survival skills can teach so much from self reliance to developing grit and creativity, its all good stuff and definitely would capture kids attention i think. There is a growing number of "nature preschools" "forest kindergartens" and outdoor education programs being incorporated into some schools around the world and they are showing amazing results; like they are finding that 1 hour of outdoor instruction a week is literally raising test scores across the board and having so many other beneficial effects. It is so well worth teaching kids these skills and getting them outside, the nature connection aspect alone makes it incredibly valuable for future generations and the environment.

You could probably catch fish with your hands. Ive done it before. It's not all to difficult once you get the technique down. Basically you put your hand in the water and move it slowly twards the fish. This should take a few minutes. Once you are very close, move your hand alongside it's body while wiggling your fingers once you have felt the fish's gills, grap it and pull it out of the water as soon as you can. Thanks for the video. - Josh
