As sad as I am for Roglic my respect for the man continues to go through the roof - never gives up and will send it until someone tells him he can’t go on. Not sure how you can dislike someone who turns up day in day out to compete like that. Absolute warrior…

I love and root for the guy but these crashes! An absolutely splendid attack squandered due to...what exactly? Fatigue induced inattentiveness in close quarters? Lack of focus? Yes, he's a powerhouse; he's a tough mofo; he's exciting to watch. But his crashes happen too regularly, without due cause, to be attributed to bad luck. His are the kinds of mistakes that separate champions from also rans.

4:40 remco on right side of the road, not many spectators, the thin white tape barrier. looking back through the footage, I'd guess that's between 2.7-2.5km to go, and he's already slowed down by that point so probably put his hand up even earlier. agreed that he probably had a slow leak, felt it earlier, and waited until 3km's, which i don't think is an issue. on fully functioning equipment, i think he loses the same amount of time, so not really an issue imho. but gutted from roglic, that was an incredibly impressive attack. he must've been nearly blacking out from the effort, tbh i think that played a role in the crash and how dazed he looked afterwards

@@JSBax and he also said he intended to move up on the bump where Roglic attacked. It would honestly be delusional to believe that, without equipment problems, he would not be able to move up to the front of the chasing group, definitely with Roglic lighting up the front and stringing out the peloton. Roglic attacking would make Remco moving up easier, as the peloton forms almost a straight line, and the stronger riders don't have to wiggle themselves in between others. Obviously, reaching that front, who knows whether he would have been able to cross still? That would be an out of this world effort, and in a 3rd week, those are on short supply... He probably would have led the chase, but the impact of that on a full-send Roglic attack could be pretty minimal. He probably would have lost more or less the 8s he would has right now. @JSBax

Well I for one a soon as he crashed I was like "what's everyone whinging about, Roglic just used the 3km rule to save his stage too". Though it seems a bit rich if Remco gets the 8 sec group 's time, esp given by his own admission had gotten way out of position already purely because he was nervous about the surface. I don't know what people think Remco would have been thinking to fake the mechanical, given his position and the risk of getting a later group's time, vs his ability to close back to a forward group... But I dunno maybe they don't award the times like that.

Also, look at the riders in that peloton at 8 sec, the rest of the GC and the likes of Bakelands and many unknown riders on are in it. The rest of the riders who didn't finish in that peloton just didn't try to stay because it wasn't important for them. So, who would think that suddenly Evenpoel is so weak that he can not even stay in that group, and comes up with this crazy plan to fake a flat tire. If that where true he will be out of the top 10 anyway in a few days. The only reason I see is that they wrongly believe that Evenepoel would get the same time as Pedersen (and Roglic) without having to ride for it. But thats just ignorant.

Damn, I really can't understand the hypocrisy towards the 3km rule. Commentators fucking praising the 3km rule in hectic TdF bunch sprint stages when the big gc teams finally drop back unlike this one Vuelta stage where an actual mechanical happens only for the organisation to be criticised for applying the rule on a stage that was summarized as a flat sprint stage. I think the stage results turned out fairly towards Rogla, who got his 8 seconds on the first group of (top 10) gc contenders with Remco being added to them. It is really unlikely for Remco to be dropped on that small uphill where Mas was completely out of position too (and vision) but still made it to the first group of gc contenders. The only unfair part is Remco not having to spend as much energy in the last 3km, but thats just a consequence of the implementation of the rule.

I have my questions on whether it's right to be given the same time as a group you weren't even in position for, when you could potentially have punctured outside the 3km mark, then rolled into the 3km to get help from the team car. Looked like he was pretty far back already by the time the camera switched to show him asking for the team car, which may well have been from rolling slowly into the first 3km due to already having punctured. If he did roll in some distance behind the group finishing after Roglic, 8 seconds is a bit too generous.

What’s unfair in this type of situation is that Remco gets to spin in out easy, get the lactate out of the legs and cross the line super chill recovery mode, while Roglic does a very hard Vo2 max effort (without even talking about the crash) and Remco gets the same time as the main front peloton that had to push to the line.

Roglic himself chose to attack and got 8 seconds for it - that was his choice. If you want to make a comparison, then compare Remco to Mas who just chilled with the peloton. Sure Remco saved a little energy compared to Mas, but it probably doesn't make any significant difference between the two.

Roglič had it. He had a gap. He was never going to get the bonus seconds. He’d done the job, maybe not in terms of time but certainly in terms of making a statement and worrying Evenepoel, and he still managed to blow it. We might be in a situation where Evenepoel has basically won the Vuelta by puncturing on a flat stage because Roglič flew a bit too close to the sun in a way that only Roglič is capable of doing. Baffling finish. Btw, the 3km rule must be protected, not because it makes the race safer (bc it doesn’t), but because it makes it fairer. The alternative is race favourites losing minutes over crashes and mechanicals they have no control over on stages they are not required to contest, given how high the pace is on sprint stages, meaning the spectacle is quickly lost further into the race.

There is no way to make up lost time due to a mechanical in the last km's, the speed at that moment is too high and there is too little distance left to make up time even if you are going faster than the riders upfront. Now, they could maybe say that rider needs to maintain a minimal speed after the incident if uninjured, with the minimal speed being in relation to the speed of the group they were in, something like 80% or so. I agree that this 3-km rule was a bit unfair in this case, because Remco kind of abused this rule and saved a lot of energy in last climb, while Primož burned his legs to the ground and sadly crashed for those negligible 8 s. In my opinion the rule should be like this: in the case of mechanical inside 3 or 5 km or 10 km, you raise your hand, stop and then your time stops for 30 s max (to change/repair your bike) or until you are back on the bike again (whatever comes first). So you have to battle against the clock till the finnish with same effort as anybody else. This would "save" GC riders but also make the race a bit more fair in my opinion.

I think a lot of people are using the TV footage to determine if the tyre was flat or not which is pretty stupid given that it's highly likely that they themselves have experienced many different punctures themselves and should know that a slow leak can definitely be felt before it's seen. I don't understand what Roglic was thinking. Once the sprinters went past, why was he fighting to get on the wheels? Seems awfully risky (in hindsight). If he would have just pedaled in safely behind them, he might very well be in the red jersey today.

I really think in stages like that the 3km rule shouldn’t be applied as it usually is. It should be applied maybe after the last climb or smth. But in this case, every gc contender went like 100% for 4min straight while remco was chilling but still getting exactly the same time

@eval144
@eval144 Жыл бұрын
Couple of things: - did Evenepoel really have a puncture? Didn't really look like it, did it?? (do these things get checked?) - Roglic lucky to be counted towards the M Pederson group, despite the crash being his fault - why Roglic only gains 8 seconds on Evenepoel makes no sense to me?! Evenepoel was way off the back and distanced already when he got the puncture For a sport where every second and every last effort counts this all feels very unscientific and unfair
@donpablo8459
@donpablo8459 Жыл бұрын
Yeah the puncture was checked. IMO the tire slowly lost its pressure and Remco was falling back and made some effort to stay in the peleton untill the 3km and wouldn't that be what we all would do. Like it's just stupid to stop right in front of the 3km if you still manage to get over the mark with half flat tire
@decascador
@decascador Жыл бұрын
Couple of replies: - Yes it gets checked and Evenepoel's puncture was recognized as such by the jury. - Roglic clearly deserved the bonus seconds. Same rule applies as to Evenepoel. Very sad to see him leave the race. He would have made this week very interesting. - Evenepoel could have easily made it to the first peloton without mechanical, even if he came from a disadvantaged position. The slower groups of the peloton were clearly with riders without GC or stage win ambitions, who didn't even attempt to follow.

@RaZuA1989

Nothing except that the race profiles are decided beforehand. So you'd have to be able to time your off days perfectly with the sprinting schedule. Christ man, this is pro cycling. Without the 3km rule Rogla would have lost time for that panache move. It does have a place. Re: Remco it’s not a conspiracy regarding the flat, but it is interesting if he got it at let’s say 5km to go, rolled to the back of the bunch and stopped AFTER the 3km banner to change bike - “oh 3km rule” well no mate, actually your incident happened before then.

But from say 5 to 2,7 or so km he was be able to follow with that flat tire: that also is easier said then done, certainly if the tire is really flat. It probably went flatter and flatter and the extra weight on backwheel when it goes uphill (that is where he stopped) was maybe the point that he noticed / couldn't continue. I think the current decision was following the 3k rules enough. Otherwise it will be difficult to check.

The 3km rule doesn't do what it was intended for. I'm not sure it's appropriate to use it for a mechanical, I thought it was intended as a crash-safety measure by reducing the pressure in the sprints. A better solution would be for the GC times to be taken at 3km, then the stage winner awarded at the finish line.
@Medikto

No, it's also a fair play rule.
@matthiasvanderhallen6842
@matthiasvanderhallen6842 Жыл бұрын
@@Medikto I don't think it originated as a fairplay rule, even though I like it because it kind of has that effect. Also, some mechanicals, flats definitely one of them, being covered still offer a safety benefit: riders can still cover some distance on a (almost) flat. People who cycle, know. It just makes it harder AND more slippery. It's the last part that gives mechanicals like that being covered a safety aspect. Sure, you're a lot less stable continuing on a slow-flat, but who's not going to take that risk when it would otherwise ruin your GC? The three km rule changes that risk equation.

@@barbarap9452 yep. As commentators said you always keep riding on a tyre until your car can get to you, inside 3km or not Except of course, if you are finding it hard to stay with the group that you want to take the same time as. I doubt this 4 minute effort would have really impacted riders legs in the next stages, it wasn't really going that hard if your have 3 sprinters making it onto the podium, the other GC riders more likely knew he'd only take a few seconds, so just kept it close, but not went bonkers either.

@@MDP1702 explain why Remco was going backwards inside 5km, even his own team mates looked around at 4.5km and had to drop back. Roglic would have taken more than 8 seconds. @MDP1702
@MDP1702 Жыл бұрын
@@pantster9855 Several possible reasons: not feeling safe on these roads, not wanting to get caught in chaos, ... Obviously it is very likely the tire already started deflate, but that only means he had to spend the effort of riding on a flattish tire at high speed to remain in the bunch untill after 3rd km point. Fred Wright isn't exactly GC rider, neither in climbing performance nor in terms of the TT performance a rider like Roglic can do, it wouldn't be abnormal for him to be at his limit here. Anyway, the rule is the rule. I do think it needs to be changed so a rider still needs to keep riding a decent pace after the incident, but that isn't the case now and wasn't the case when it was Pogacar in the TdF and Hindley in the Giro. And I said it wouldn't have a meaningfull effect tomorrow and in the stages afterwards. If it makes the difference, it would have been stupid of Roglic to then try something now.
