My Step-dad's friend is a fishing guide and is also big into playing bass. One day when I was about 17 he came by our house to borrow some of my Step-dad's fishing stuff. That day he was taking out none other than Les Claypool on one of the local lakes. (for those that don't know, Les Claypool is an outdoorsy type, into hunting and fishing and stuff) Well there's Les standing in my driveway, I could not believe what I was seeing. I got him to sign one of my CD's and I asked if I could come. No dice, though it wasn't Les that had a problem with it, it was Dave (the guide). Anyway, if you've ever wondered what he's like, he's pretty much just normal. He wouldn't stand out in a crowd, I'll put it that way.

and it is worth reading the lyrics I think, Primus used a lot of symbolism within them. For example on the song Too Many Puppies, and how it alludes to young men, pretty much still children, joining armies and killing each other for no real reason other than for the power structure that orchestrates them. Still very much applicable to today

i first saw primus in 88-89 and it was like discovering the beatles. i saw em at the berkeley square on university. at the time it was still a thrash paradise, but they were just SO different we all went nuts when they played a gig. we'd hang out around rainbow records on shattuck and hear that primus was playing, and everybody would drop everything and run to their show. no cell phones, no internet. just flyers handed out, and some posts on poles. it was pretty crazy. they'd play with all kinds of off genre groups. like Schooly D. musta went to like a dozen shows. it was our little gem. i think i was at their show for the demo Suck on This. it wasn't even on tape, just an Album. i bought copies and sent them to friends back east raving about shit they never heard before. next thing i know, they're playing around the world in stadiums. it blew up THAT fast. but i'll always remember 89 when they were still ours. you could run into Les the next day after a show on telegraph, just hanging out, running around. it was amazeballs that we knew they'd HAVE to get big, but i dunno if they knew it. the amazing thing was how well the thrash crowds handled them. at the time, you picked your lane. but bands were already crossing over to appeal to all genres. Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Faith No More took that thrash crowd into new alternarock places. broke down a lot of walls like aerosmith/Run DMC had just prior. everything crossing over got huge, where it never really did before.

Les Claypool, bassist/ lead singer, is the greatest bass player of all time. He auditioned for Metallica after theirs had passed. Metallica told him he would have to dumb it down to join the band. Primus' genre can be described as; Plucky, quirky and the funkiest bass lines heard by humans.

What gets lost in this song behind Les’s bass is all the extras added into the drum beat. Pay attention to the little double taps of the bass drum and quick cymbals, especially in the second part of the song. Really intricate stuff and it’s a real display of talent.

This song doesn't really show it so much, but Les Claypool is one of the best bassists in the world. Freaking amazing. He can make it sing. Him, Cliff Burton (RIP), Geddy Lee...

A lot of comments here about "my name is mud" meaning i'm in trouble, actually the saying comes from the 1800's when a politician named Mudd was caught in a scandal that ruined him, after that people started using it as in "if my wife/boss finds out my name is mud" The band Primus and my name is mud came from the stucco trade, Les Claypool was a laborer on a stucco crew, Primus is the name of a synthetic stucco product, when the guys applying the primus to the wall run out they yell at the top of their lungs "MUD", they dont say Les, Randy, Darrel, etc., etc. bring me some more, they yell "MUD", all helpers on a stucco crews are named "MUD", My uncle owns a stucco company, been there, done that, i enjoy watching your reactions, takes me back to when i was first hearing this stuff.

Mudd was the man who mended John Wilkes Booth's leg later that night after he assassinated Lincoln. He went to prison for it, was pardoned I'm 1869 by president Andrew Johnson. But his name was forever shamed. Hence the term "your name is going to be Mudd"

Les Claypool is unique. I think he learned his craft at the alter of Zappa.
@jessenicoletta41604 жыл бұрын
I don't know, he has commented on his appreciation for what FZ did, and he more than likely listened to him growing up, but I haven't found anything that cites him looking to Zappa as an influence on his sound. I DO know that Les has looked to Rush and Geddy lee as an inspiration (at least in terms of bass virtuosity) but I think the weird sound he and Primus creates is all his own. Not to mention, Frank's weirdness is weird, but very put together while Les and Primus are just a bit off kilter. Like, Frank did things that you would go "huh, I didn't think of doing those chords together/those notes together" while Primus/Les claypool just think up controlled insanity in their music.
@kesleycottrell14164 жыл бұрын
Jesse Nicoletta Frank invented WTF rock and anybody that has picked up a bass is influenced by the greats like Geddy Lee, Geezer Butler, Rodger Waters, John Entwhistle etc.

You should check out Mr. Wright by Claypool Lennon Delirium. It's an old school psychedelic rock project Les Claypool (Bassist/Vocalist for Primus) has with John Lennon's son, Sean Lennon. All the musicianship and humor, just a little less edge.
