Prince's 1984 soundtrack to the movie of the same title still stands out as one of his most shining achievements, and is undoubtedly one of the most lavish, euphoric pop records I've laid ears on.
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

Go figger Nah, I'm very familiar with all of those artists and I'd say Prince is up there. Idk what you're on about when you say I don't widen out... I can assure you that a lot of people would agree that Prince is one of the greatest in terms of guitar playing, along with those people you mentioned. And would you look at that, Rolling Stone thinks he is the 33rd greatest guitarist of all time, crazy right?? www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/100-greatest-guitarists-20111123/prince-20111122 Oh and Spin Mag thinks he's the 6th greatest! www.spin.com/2012/05/spins-100-greatest-guitarists-all-time/11/ Yeah they need to "widen out" too!

Purple Rain was Prince's popularity apex and it's a great album, but for me 1999 is better, partly because it's longer. He's always been a curiously unique mixture of corny and cool, but you'd have to be there back in the 80's to fully comprehend just how cool he was.

I know you commented this 2 years ago but the reason Love Symbol is underrated is because people give the album so much shit because of Tony M's raps. Without him, the album would be almost perfect. It's always been one of my faves. The Gold Experience is also another great Prince album from the 90's but not as underrated as D&P and Love Symbol.

Fantastic album. From the blood pumping solo in let's go crazy, the ultimatum in the beautiful ones, singing about God in I would die for you, and the righteous finality that finishes the journey off in the title track Purple Rain. Spiritually fulfilling. Not sure if you'll review the album, but you should listen to the gold experience from when Prince was the love symbol, or just the track The Morning Papers from the love sign album is amazing. Have you ever considered reviewing classic soul and R&B albums? Teddy Pendergrass, Parliament, Funkadelic, the Isley Brothers, Jamiroquai even?

There's not a single bad thing to say about any of the songs, and has to be, for me, pretty much the best album of the 80s, and one of the best albums of all time.

Abdul Wando Or Off the Wall. Both those albums are essential. I would even argue Bad and Dangerous are but they're more in the 8.5 to 9/10 region, as compared to 10/10 for Off the Wall and Thriller. He needs to get an MJ album review on his channel asap anyway. Crazy that he hasn't already for as long as he's been going.

Just saw the movie for the 100th time, i must say prince as an artist is very captivating, he is very emotional when it comes to performance, very soulful artist.
@triborogigolo
@triborogigolo 10 жыл бұрын
whats wrong with prince being vulnerable on the beautiful ones? a grown man that can sing and show his emotions is real, drake does the same thing and he gets crucified for it... I think your nitpicking a lil bit. this album is a classic. and for only nine songs at that. how many artists in any genre can drop a classic nine song lp?.. this album stands on its own with or without the movie, but for me its hard to mention the album without mentioning the movie, I think prince doing a movie for the first time, he was a natural, similar to when Eminem did 8 mile. . no there weren't any a-list actors in it except for Clarence Williams the 3rd. but the story was real and the emotions in it played by the different characters were real. and that's why its a classic. im from the ol skool and remember when it came out when I was little. I listened to the album hundreds of times, but was too young to see the movie.

There is actually at least one missing song on the Purple Rain album which was in the movie. On album Hits and B Sides there is a song titled "God" which is from Purple Rain. In it prince does the most insane high pitched singing.

I just gotta say seeing this featured in your 10/10s of the 80’s made me listen to the album again. I loved Prince so much, but over time I stopped listening to his music. None of my exes got his music and it was disappointing (… which makes it sound like I broke up with them over this 😂). That was immature of me. Came back to this album. Perfection. The emotion, the funk, the drama, the beauty, the SINGING and performance. It’s so fun and flashy and yet it touches my heart. That’s kind of what being in love feels like, that stupid happy feeling that still means so much and touches your heart. Tantric lust with all these emotions flowing through and this whole story and just how beautiful the record is. There’s nothing else really the same as this album, Purple Rain doesn’t miss. There’s nobody else like Prince. Best collection of love songs ever.

With this album, never start in the middle. You start on track 1 okay and listen and you listen to all. Or even watch the movie that is somewhat cheesy but its so 80s you just want to go back and youll hear the album in full.

As a huge Prince fan, I find your view very good, I like your panegyrics and your metaphors (10 bottles of soul glow). It is a good album. You need to really listen to sign o the times if you can. It is the quintessential Prince album. There are more sides to Prince there than even on this album.

About low end - I wonder about CDs produced in the 80s. I remember hearing Donald Fagen The Nightfly was supposed to be one of the best recorded albums of all time. Then I got one of the early CD versions and the album has no low end at all. I don't know if that is how it sounded in the studio though. The drum sound on Darling Nikki sounds like a suitcase.

It's just Purple Rain. Listen to 1999, Controversy, Dirty Mind, any albums pre PR have a low end that's at least noticeable. That's what really bothers me about PR. I can only hear clear bass on Computer Blue and Baby I'm A Star.

theneedledrop When you spoke of the minimal bass presence in the production it reminded me of this quote from Miles: The Autobiography (which I don't know if I completely understand, but I think I do) "I decided to go electric all the way (Yamaha gave me some equipment in 1973). Before that I had bought a real cheap sound system that was all right for the clubs I was playing in at the time, but it wasn't good for the big halls, because nobody could hear each other. So the sound just kept getting higher because when it's higher you can make people feel things better. (But today, Prince might be bringing that low sound back, because he has that double bass. You don't hear a bass line in Prince's music because he takes keyboard bass and doubles it with regular bass just like Marcus Miller does.)" I'll have to revisit Purple Rain to see if that's what's going on, but that may go to explain.

I love the movie. Out of all the movies that is my favorite. I'm 14 and it is rated R and I first watched it when I was 7. But its not that bad. Imma say only 1 sex scene. Alot of violence. And a lot of swearing. But honestly that is an amazing movie and the songs are great. I love prince himself. He has a great voice. I recomend the movie.
