It is part break up-but mainly a spiritual journey with your loved one. Purple Rain (red and blue makes purple) is thought to be the blood of Christ mixed with rain to wash away your sins and guide you to the purple rain (heaven/cleanse from your sins etc). In a sense both washing away your sins and at the same time getting you to heaven/God.

My favorite song from Purple Rain is "Computer Blue (Hallway Speech version)" which, unfortunately, doesn't have a video, but the song is awesome. Even the edited version of "Computer Blue" is pretty good.
