My late uncle ( Frank ) was the pilot of this flight. Boards of inquiry concluded that due to heavy fog and winds the flight veered inland ( instead of the usual coastal route ) and crashed into the side of the mountain ie it was an accident. The throttles were fully open according to post crash investigation which suggests the flight crew tried to apply full power to climb out of the impending crash but Sunderland flying boats, though reliable, were noted to be underpowered. The tail gunner, Andy Jack, survived as his entire turret was ripped off at impact. My Late father, who was in the AIF, visited Andy Jack post WW2 but noted Jack was sworn to secrecy by the official secrets act so could tell little or nothing. In any event he was at the tail of the plane and probably saw or heard little or nothing of what was occurring in the cockpit until the very last moment.

My family ( a few generations before me ) had roots in Shepparton ( there is even a Goyen Reserve in Shepp, near municipal offices ), Victoria ( though i grew up in Melb ), Frank was actually Frank Mckenzie Goyen and my other uncle ( Norman Joseph ( Joe ) ) flew as a tail gunner/ radio operator in B25's and did 35 missions i believe including 2 on D-Day over Normandy supporting the landings. My dad was infantry in Mid East and Crete spent 3 or so yrs as a POW in Austria ( Captured in Crete )

I have seen a BBC News interview from 2003, in which the Flight Sergeant Jack's niece(Margaret Harris) declared that he told his brother that the Duke had been at the controls of the plane; that Jack had dragged him from the pilot's seat after the crash; and that there was an additional person on board the plane whose identity has never been revealed.

This was the most interesting "War story" I have heard in many years. It is also the first time I had heard of most of the issues and questions raised. The actual history of WWII seems to be much curious-er than any of the accounts that made it into the record books. Thank you for this intriguing perspective.

I love how the guy who survived and made the decision to leave the crash site is made to look highly suspicious. What exactly was he supposed to do? It speaks very highly of him that he was able to get himself to a place of safety. Obviously I don't know what his training was, possibly he had been trained for such incidents. Nevertheless, it would have been apparent to him that he was the only server and he took it from there. Many people would have stayed with the plane due to a state of shock and possibly died as a result.

@@skippmclovan1135What normally happens is the tail flips over so his stop is over a huge distance. For the same reason the pilot is in the worst place. Some people I know crashed into a Swiss mountain circa 1973 or so and those in the tail survived but most died. It was a mothers union trip to Switzerland from Wells in Somerset. Normally a person dies with a sudden stop at 18 miles per hour ie hitting a tree or brick wall.

I like this documentary but they seem to make logical things seem suspicious: the full throttle engines, leaving a burning, explosive disaster scene to get help. Those two things seem like the most obvious things one would do in a plane crash situation.
@SecretSquirrelFun
@SecretSquirrelFun 3 ай бұрын
I’m not a pilot, but the engines being discovered at full throttle makes sense to me. If the plane was losing altitude and/or power, the pilot would have been trying to get as much power as he could, trying to prevent them from crashing. Trying desperately to lift he plane and find a better place to land.

You know the same argument can be made for King Charles III. As Prince Charles, he was, apparently, quite sensitive, artistic and caring. Prince Philippe insisting he go to his old school, nearly destroyed the gentle soul. I believe Prince Philippe intended to help his son and by no means believe he meant anything but to help Prince Charles toughen up.

Your saying that because Hesse bailed out and his plane crashed the entire mission fell apart? Why wasn’t Hesse sentenced to death at the Nuremberg trials? What kept him quiet then and all those years in Spandau prison. Hesse didn’t just set out without any plan but there’s still information missing. 40:27 As for the prince dying in a plane crash? Hess was a pilot, Hess received basic flight training at Oberschleissheim and Lechfeld Air Base from March to June 1918, and advanced training at Valenciennes in France in October. On 14 October, he was assigned to Jagdstaffel 35b, a Bavarian fighter squadron equipped with Fokker D.VII biplanes. He saw no action with Jagdstaffel 35b, as the war ended on 11 November 1918. Hess did not fly to Scotland in a jet Me262, which did not enter service until 1942. He flew Me110 twin engine fighter bomber, specially modified with extra fuel tanks and a better compass and radio. He wanted to meet the Duke of Hamilton to discuss a coup d’etat because the duke was also a pilot and was a wing commander at RAF Turnhouse near Edinburg at the time.

Absolutely no evidence presented. The circumstances of the Sunderland crash are not investigated. Was the plane on course? What was the weather like - specifically the cloud base? Was the plane flying low to verify its position? If it was brought down by a bomb why would this not have been timed to explode over the sea where no evidence would have been left. What happened to the surviving gunner? The issue of the range of the ME 110 is countered by the fact that Hess ordered long range fuel tanks to be fitted to it (I guess someone would say that this was part of the cover up - but it should be mentioned). A coup against Churchill would have taken a lot of planning and would have involved politicians and senior army offices and it would have been very difficult not to leave any evidence. If there was a peace plan organized with the Royal Family why didn't Hess - or any of the other defendants - use this as part of their defense at Nuremburg?

Except for the conspiracy aspect(s) to it this production still does well in another aspect: it paints the picture of George's young life and how he was as a person. Lot of great pieces of contemporary footage. Maybe we should take the rest with a grain of salt, it just may be necessary nowadays to add something like that simply to get (to) the attention of the viewer?

One clue is that wreckage was over a wide area. This is typical if there was a bomb aboard. It would also make the reason why the survivor wasn’t happy to stay by the plane. Survival instinct normally is stay put unless there is a bigger problem. I dont rule any scenario out if reasonable and this is eminently reasonable. George V himself has been argued as not a natural death. There was talk of a military coup when Harold Wilson was PM etc etc One thing I find strange is that I never knew of this person at all not that means much but he does seem to be well hidden for such a colourful character.

They appear to be basing the story on the fact that the gunner at the back of the plane tried to get away from the plane as soon as he became conscious. Of course he would. Anyone with only half a mind knows that the plane might explode and anyone in the vicinity would be killed, if not burnt alive. What stands out for me is the amount of money that was scattered around, what was this money for or who was it for? And if there really was a lot of money scattered around why didn't the country folk who first went to the plane help themselves to it? Would they have taken the chance considering they probably knew that the plane could explode? I doubt we will ever know the entire truth of the whole story.

my error: i called it a Henkel 110, when it was in fact a Messerschmitt machine. later in the film they raise questions about the aircraft's range, and that it should not have been able to have made the flight without refuelling - however, at least two histories report that his plane had been modified with long-range fuel tanks (Nesbit & van Acker)

General Sikorski's death in an air accident about the same time was also regarded as suspicious. Polish leader based in England by then of course. Churchil has been implicated in that too. Strangely enough, Prince George had been offered the crown of Poland and I happen to own his personal copy of the Cambridge History of Poland, from his library sold off to help out Princess Marina's estate. (Perhaps he was hoping to bone up on their culture.)

No - two experienced pilots? And if you see the site of the crash (the memorial) its not really the "side of a hill", its just one of all the hills that make up the whole landscape, so clearing them was a pilots job. Its not like they were flying over flat land and hit a hill they didnt see. Experienced RAF dont "just fly into the side of a hill". They were headed for Iceland, that takes experience and planning esp in those days.

Sounds to speculative for me. There’s one year and three months between Hess’s flight and the death of Prince George. By the way I am absolutely convinced Hess did flew without anyone in Germany knowing. Had it been an arranged trip he would have been flown incognito to a country of neutrality like Sweden or Switzerland. And why would George try to bring the UK out of the war at this late stage, after the USA had entered the war? In my mind it was an accident.
