Gerard has some of the saddest back story ever. He got cursed and turned into a frog for being bad, but all he was doing was trying to get his parents attention because they were ignoring him and he was a child

Honestly I think it's the characters! Starstruck was obviously wonderful and such a goofy atmosphere that it'd be hard not to make a likeable character, but he's definitely putting the ante in to the bits in ways he didn't used to, if that makes sense.
