The following is previously unseen rehearsal footage of Prince & The Revolution from the summer of 1984. It was in this very room at Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse in Eden Prairie, Minnesota that Prince created and committed to tape one of his most beloved and iconic compositions, which six years later would become a worldwide hit for Sinead O’Connor. Prince’s original studio version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" is presented here for the first time.
Video directed by Andrea Gelardin and Ruth Hogben.

Folks I will say it again, you have it reversed, Prince is not covering this song, Prince wrote Nothing Compares 2 U in 1984, Sinead did her cover version in 1990. Here are some other songs you may not be aware of that Prince wrote, and either gave away, or that were covered by other artists. The list is huge, these are just a few. Manic Monday covered by the Bangles, this song was originally recorded as a duet with Apollonia, and some of the music/backup vocals by Brenda Bennet are still in place on The Bangles released version. I Feel For You covered by Chaka Khan, written by Prince in 1979 and released on his 2nd album of that same year. He gave a song called With This Tear to Celine Dion. The Glamorous Life and Love Bizarre on Sheila E's albums (and 95% of the other songs on those albums), is all Prince. Same for The Time with Jungle Love and The Bird. He gave a song called U to Paula Abdul for her Spellbound album. Sugar Walls was a song of his that he gave to Sheena Easton. For the song Stand Back, Stevie asked him to come to the studio to listen to the song, and that is where in 25 minutes, Prince laid out the entire keyboard track for the song, that is him playing on the track. Could go on forever, Prince was everywhere in music, most of which he never took credit for or cared to brag about. Peace

Prince attempted to assault her (physically, not sexually) during a meeting because of something he didn't like about it. But you think some 5 foot 1 American geezer is going to get the best of a anybody who grew up in Ireland during the troubles? Not a chance. Doesn't sound like he was the best person ever. Sinead was a gem though, a beautiful soul with more troubles than Ireland, maybe she finally be at peace

Only a handful of musicians can write multiple hit singles. Only a handful of musicians can play flawless lead guitar. Only a handful of musicians have an octave range of G1 to G7. Calvin Cheney - Actually, that’s the downside of acrobatics on heels. He was on those painkillers because of chronic pain, particularly in his hips. The man could not move without excruciating agony. His OD was because he was given a counterfeit prescription that was mixed with fentanyl, an opioid 30 to 50 times stronger than heroin. The man didn’t have a chance.

I grew up only a couple of miles from Prince's stomping grounds. I had numerous encounters with him as it was inevitable in the relatively small town of Chanhassen. He watched me pitch a little league game from underneath a tree at Lake Ann park near his home. I delivered pizzas to his house and to his studio numerous times when I was in high school. I was witness to his intimate late night impromptu shows at Paisley Park more times than I can count on two hands. Anyone who might suggest that he isn't the greatest live performer of all time simply hasn't seen him in concert.

This makes me cry. I dont care what anyone says, Prince was such a rarity. I still cry over his loss. He understood more than people realised. It wasnt just as a black man, but so much more. He seen his mother abused, he'd been abused, felt like an outsider to his own race at times and his own sexuality. To me as a part Native American woman whom always have felt as an outsider to all parts of herself, Prince helped me to accept my uniqueness. To embrace my ownself and be open and acceptining of love and friendship. I will forever mourn such a amazing human being. He was a person for all people

This was really interesting to find. I came here because of Sinead passing away and wanted to give Prince due respect for what was his creation. Its really interesting to see it being performed here so early - he mixed it up over the years in his concerts, but I like hearing what it sounded like in his mind not long after he'd written it. Beautiful product of not only Sinead but Prince too. A wonderful partnership.

It's my personal opinion that Prince was likely the most complete rock star we've ever had the pleasure of listening to and be entertained by -- he was an elite-level singer, songwriter, instrumentalist (of multiple instruments), composer, producer, lyricist, dancer, performer, choreographer, and showman. A very few in the history of late 20th and early 21st Century western pop music (all genres from rock, R&B, C&W, soul, hard rock, metal, and so on) can claim to score straight-A's on all of those categories -- Prince is one of those few and may, in fact, be the only one who can.

So many on here still thinking this is Prince covering Sinead. Friends, you have it reversed, Prince wrote this in 1984, and 'allowed' Sinead to cover it in 1990. Now sit down for this next one, Prince also wrote Manic Monday and offered it to The Bangles, catapulting their careers, so now you all learned two new things today. Prince wrote hundreds of songs for other artists over the decades. Anyway, fantastic to hear Prince's original version in all its glory. Forever missed, Prince was filled with spirit, goodness, love and compassion, he was superhuman in so many ways, and is indeed a role model, not only as a musician, but as a human being as well. He represented the possibility that we all have inside of us to become better at who we are and anything we set our minds to. Looking into his eyes is like looking into heaven itself, because he was as pure of a spirit as they come. His presence simply cannot be denied. it is why the coolest, most fronting of celebrities, were reduced to the likes of a wide eyed teenage girl at a bieber concert whenever they were in his presence. He was the celebrities celebrity and the musicians musician, a status that was well earned and that he very humbly circumnavigated for quite some time. There will simply never be another like him. God sent him on a mission, and he fulfilled it with flying shades of purple.

I’m sorry but I’ve heard her sing this song and to me, there’s NO comparison - Prince has the best version. I don’t know how her fans can say she sings better than Prince! How can an Irish, female folk singer do a song written by a black funk, rock. R&B, soul superstar sing a song he wrote, better than him? Y’all love her but she had nowhere the talent of Prince Rogers Nelson! I know you want to give her credit over him because she’s one of yours but that’s just ignorant to think she’s better than him. Just standing on a stage singing in an off pitch voice while this man is singing, playing guitar AND dancing, you cannot be serious!😂 Plus, I don’t like her - she lied on Prince saying he spit on her or assaulted her or done other BS after he’d written a hit song for her!😡 Prince knew LOTS of women and none have ever said he was aggressive or violent towards them! Guess that’s what he gets for helping the likes of her!

I recently got into prince and wow. The man was talented. Flamboyant and strong. It sucks that I’m liking his work when he’s gone but I can still indulge myself in his work and even appreciate gems like these. I might have not grown up with you but I can grow old listening to you. You are missed.

This is the second best version of the song, which is a compliment in itself. Thanks Prince, you paved the way in making Sinead’s version untouchable. Brilliant songwriter.

JZuniga1088 sinead wasnt officially Prince's doing. He hated her version. She did it without his permission. But he did release it twice. Once with his group the family in the 80s and then he released a live version on his greatest hits album.

Dweaver573 I wonder if he hated Sinead’s musically or simply because he was upset she covered it without involving him. I’ve read Sinead’s stories about what happened when they met in person and they’re pretty wild (physical altercations, etc)

To be honest while I really like this version Sinead's is a LOT more emotional. I still like it way better than this one and think Prince was probably just throwing shade cus he knew hers was tops.

Absolutely mind-blowing! Prince's original version of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' is a testament to his unparalleled songwriting talent. While many know this song from Sinead O'Connor's powerful rendition, hearing Prince's soulful vocals is a deeply moving experience. The raw emotion and vulnerability he brings to the lyrics are simply breathtaking. It's a reminder of his incredible range as an artist and his ability to connect with listeners on a profound level. Thank you, Prince, for sharing this timeless masterpiece with the world. Your music continues to touch hearts and souls. 👑🎶

@@davidb9531you could say that it's better mixed in the studio, better overall sound and a beautiful voice performance from Sinead. But technically, musically, this is more sophisticated.
