Not only was Prince a great singer and dancer but he was also a multi-instrumentalist who wrote and produced his own songs. He played every single instrument on some songs on his "Sign O the times" album. Back in the day, there was some debate about whether Prince or Michael Jackson was the best. In terms of overall musical talent, Prince was far superior to Jackson.
@TimothySmiths

If we're just talking about SOTT, he played everything on Sign O The Times, Play In The Sunshine, Housequake, Dorothy Parker, It, Starfish and Coffee, Slow Love, Hot Thing, Forever In My Life, I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man and The Cross.. The Revolution are on the 2 live tracks (Adore and Beautiful Night) and Wendy and Lisa contributed to Strange Relationship. He played literally everything on his first 5 albums, let the Revolution contribute more to the next 3, then it was mostly him again for the rest.

He was a Lyricist, composer, vocalist, polyinstrumentalist, choreographer, producer, fashion icon and provocateur. He released his first album at the age of 20. Between the years of 1979 and 1984 he released my favorite 5 albums. "Prince", "Dirty Mind", "Controversy", "1999", and "Purple Rain". He sang all parts and played all instruments on these first few albums, by the time he was writting/composing "Purple Rain" he was joined by his band "The Revolution". You can hear him developing and refining his style over this period. The man was a genius.

YES!!! a lot of people point to his Super Bowl performance. That was great (but it had several pointless covers that didn't quite fit, and there was a long section that was all medley, which shortens and cheapens the songs, taking away their true power and individual tone). That Hall of Fame performance, commemorating George Harrison, defines Prince as performer and Iconic mythic being. The song started strong but then lumbered languidly along. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, enter Prince. HIs presence and Impact were immediate the energy automatically lifted way up. His solo itself was amazing, and fit the song. All of a sudden that lifeless stage was struck with his tsunami of spirit and soul. He entered with a bit of mischief and left with mystery and magic... where did that guitar go? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bLl2gbpmq56vaY0.html

@@mztweety1374 Doc said in interviews that the first shows the Revolution played in 1979 he was wearing flash gold flake colors and wasn't quite sure of it. So when he expressed his feeling to Prince, Prince told him that he could be anything he chose, to be, in fact he encouraged him to branch out. So He began wearing a prison outfit but that also didn't last very long because the Revolution had an opening spot for Rick James and James also wore a prison suit. Which is when Fink came up with the scrubs, surgical mask and stethoscope. "Doctor" Fink was born. These days Doc wears NPG-era scrubs onstage to show that he played with both bands.

Michael was great and love everything he did visually and musically, Michael knew how to draw attention specially using other talents like Eddie Van Halen in Beat it, Wolfman Jack (Radio DJ) used in Thriller , Wesley Snipes in Bad, Michael Jordan in Jam, Eddie Murphy, Magic Johnson, Naomi Campbell (I think) in Remember the time. But Prince was something else because of his talent playing various instruments, writing songs for other artists, and being versatile in the different music styles he could play. I remember watching an interview of fans (after he died), that described Prince as a down to earth person who love to share things that he came up on the guitar to a small group of those local fans from Minnesota. It was like jamming in front of a circle of friends; not a huge concert. That's a humble artist that loves his fans and shares time with them in a more intimate setting.

My favorite Prince song. I was a metalhead guitar playerin high school,and Prince could not miss me. That's how badass he was. Ended up playing this song in a cover band here in idaho. I just love this song. Prince was amazing.

Prince had a movie in the 80s called "Purple Rain" that you should check out. This song and some of the scenes from this video are from the movie.

My god, was he magnificent. The music, the lyrics, his voice. Absolute perfection. I remember being a little kid when this song came out on MTV, and I thought the guy was a little feminine and odd. Now? I love his music, and have added it to the collection of songs that I feel like you can only do when its from your era. I know people of any age can appreciate Prince or anybodys music, but theres something a lil more special about it, and closer to your heart when its from YOUR childhood. Maybe that makes no sense, but I feel that way.

There is an extended version with Prince screaming his signature scream and the keyboard solo. It's worth checking out.

Did anyone notice the genius behind the scene with the doves flapping their wings to the guitar and the last dove landing when the guitar ends?

This song is credited to prince and the revolution but in reality all instruments and voices were done by Prince alone. You need to hear the long version
