Unlike all those other guitar heroes, Prince could dance, he won Grammys for his vocal performance, played all the instruments on literally hundreds of his songs and was Grammys and and Oscar for his songwriting. He was truly the GOAT and it isn't even close. I truly feel sorry for anyone who didn't appreciate Prince until he was freaking inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on this night -- HIS night -- in 2004. What the hell were you listening to that you didn't already know?

Right you are! Those people were likely ensnared in the "disco sucks" backlash of the early eighties. Unfortunately, a lot of exceptional musicians caught this social backlash; which came as a result of disco globally becoming more popular and more "profitable" than rock music. And boy, did the lovers of "classic rock" come out hating! This reality would be repeated again, when (in the same decade) rap would de-throne rock---as the most popular and commercially successful musical genre in the world!! But...this is merely the usual response America has--when something detestable becomes so beloved, that it overshadows the success of what previously reigned. This is America's typical response to being "outshone".

The REAL back story was just before this performance Rolling Stone magazine did not have Prince in the top 100 of guitar players. Tom Petty told Prince I'll give you the stage to rock out. You are see Prince glance over at Prince several times and he kept going.

I’m a Prince super fan. And since I think you posted this video reaction, the revelations of what Jan Wenner said about who should be playing rock or something like that. Well, that’s what kept Prince “untapped“ for a lot of his career. That perception that bigotry, that mindset and marginalized other amazing black American guitar players. Certainly you could point to Vernon read as being one of those as well and right now you have certain amazing guitar players are just specifically kept within the niche blues area. Anyways Prince's guitar solo here, well, he’s performed other solos that you could find on record on live recordings throughout his career in different concerts and periods encompassing eras that are just a spectacular if not more so. Since 1990 I always point to a 1990 rendition of purple rain The Nude Tour in Spain. Then there's the guitar on and aftershow in 1988 at a club named the Trojan horse where he does a solo after just my imagination, a cover of the temptation classic. The Cross Dortmund 1988. I was a regular at Glam Slam West and saw Prince live countless of times, many of his guitar solo rocked me to the core. On record, scandalous, sex suite, joy in repetition. So many for new fans to discover and intake into the soul and for old fans to re-listen over and over again!

Yes! React to more P. He was a trailblazer and a true musical genius. Miss his presence here on earth.

Try not get swept up in the mythology of this performance. There was no cutting heads duel between the guitarists, the first guy played pretty much note for note the original solo by Eric Clapton (as it was a tribute gig) and Prince was to play the outro, this was all agreed before hand. The only suprise was that during a quick soundcheck earlier Prince didnt run thru his solo due to time restraints so when it was his turn to shine there was genuine suprise at his solo.

Prince was music, that is why he was gifted, the instruments were just relating what he was, he was not a verbal person, but when he was on stage, that music was him in all it’s energy and complexity, he was true to who he was and that captivated everyone, I thought how amazing to be who you were created to be, and be able to live it out unapologetically and others understand you, the music, he was truly his craft, and Our Creator gifted us with a very Special look at a powerful Spirit living in their purpose, it’s incredible.

For those not recognizing Prince's fretboard proficiency UNTIL this performance?!? : his abilities were ALWAYS THERE. Your eyes, (and possibly, minds) were somewhere else. Someplace that prevented you from recognizing what was sooo obvious to those of us who've followed Prince from his 1978 debut. Perhaps you were listening to "classic-rock" radio at that point in your life; which was every bit as segregated then, (and now) as country music is today. It just took an incredibly long time for "mainstream" America to become familiar with his genius. Prince has always done what HE WANTED to do...musically. And THAT is, "the truth". As Bob Dylan once said: "The times...they are a'changin." Slowly, but surely ...they most certainly are. And if you look around??: you can see the "growing pains" --that always accompany change.

I think I would say that the baby boomers have the legends. Go back a little farther. This was in tribute to George Harrison. It’s unfortunate that we lost both him and John Lennon.

Right before this tribute rolling stones magazine put out thier top 100 guitarist list which the writer left him off. He was a little pissed so this was his way of giving them the middle finger and proving them wrong at the same time. Great reaction to a great song, and one of the most iconic ways ive seen someone stick it to the man!

Stories have been a bit blown out of proportion, it was planned this way, right down to the crowd surf, but it was still immaculate.

No, Prince didn't have time because he was being inducted also, so he had to prepare for that more than the performance. His only plan is Prince does a lot of ad hoc jams with anyone who will come out that he considers great and they play off of each other so Prince knows how to do stuff like that....and the back surf is something he had done at other performances so he has a signal to his big man when he wants to do that...probably some riffs and then he turns his back and his big man knows there will be a surf.
