If they would have met in the final I would have sat back and smiled cause my victory was already certain. I would have rather portugal won because it would have been nice to see them win a world cup. But I remember thinking and knowing that italy would have most likely won. They had the far stronger team.

@@Darkscenes-jp4ge portugal had Figo who was pretty much a god in 99 but by 2004 he was still world class but was getting close to the end of his career. Deco was great, maniche was playing awesome. Their goalie at the time was fucking amazing too, Ricardo was his name? He was playing soooo good that world cup especially on penalties and free kicks. But I felt italy had even more talent spread across the board. Think about it. Cannavaro, buffon, zambrotta, grosso, gattusso, materazzi, Totti, Luca Toni, del piero, pirlo, inzaghi, iaquinta, gilardino.. even the half Argentinian they brought in as a sub every game was playing at a super elite level. The star power and depth of Italy was one of the best if not the best in that entire tournament.

Yeah. I read an article about him in that world cup. Pretty interesting. I guess everyone in Italy hated him before the world cup and many didn't want him on the team. But he came on as a sub and played the rest of the world cup. Became a national hero.

I think the 'rough patch' has been and gone, ie not qualifying for the last World Cup. That 2006 team was full of genuine all-time greats such as Buffon, Cannavaro, Pirlo, Totti, Del Piero etc and I would've been surprised if they hadn't have won anything in that era. Currently, the national team have a crop of decent young players coming through and just qualified for the European Championships with a 100% record and should be expected to make a decent challenge for the trophy.

They were frustrated and bummed out that we lost when we were so close to winning.
