The 50th anniversary of the General Basic Academy of Non-Commissioned Officers (AGBS). King Felipe VI, alongside the Princess of Asturias, Princess Leonor, who is also a cadet ensign of the Army, presided over this prestigious celebration. Let’s dive into the details of this remarkable event.
King Felipe and Princess Leonor arrived at the AGBS, where they were warmly received by the Chief of Staff of the Army, Army General Amador Fernando Enseñat y Berea, and the Colonel Director of the AGBS, Ángel Francisco Rodríguez Gallo, among other notable authorities. The event was graced by the presence of former directors of the AGBS, senior non-commissioned officers who have been part of the academy, and a representation of current non-commissioned officers of the Army.
The event began with a reading commemorating the creation of the General Basic Academy of Non-Commissioned Officers, established on May 31, 1974. The academy is located in Talarn, Lleida, in a barracks previously used by the Urgell Mountain Division. Over the years, the AGBS has trained more than thirty thousand non-commissioned officers of the Army, making it a cornerstone of military education in Spain.
A highlight of the celebration was the impressive tactical patrol of the Parachute Brigade, which made a dramatic launch over the academy carrying the National Ensign. This was followed by the hoisting of the flag to the chords of the National Anthem, accompanied by a prayer of thanksgiving by the military archbishop general.
In a solemn ceremony, His Majesty King Felipe handed over the Royal Dispatches to the top five non-commissioned officers of the XLIX Promotion, representing different fundamental specialties. Following this, the remaining members of the promotion, consisting of 509 non-commissioned officers, received their dispatches from the attending authorities. Notably, 32 of these new officers are women, with an average age of 28.61 years, originating from 80% internal promotion and 20% direct entry.
The event also included a poignant moment where the head of the Training and Doctrine Command delivered the Royal Office of honorary sergeant to the families of two deceased students, Francisco Espínola and Mario Puente.
The celebration concluded with a heartfelt speech by the colonel director of the Academy, a tribute to those who gave their lives for Spain, and a grand parade of the new non-commissioned officers.
The General Basic Academy of Non-Commissioned Officers, located in the Lleida region of Pallars Jussá, near the town of Talarn, continues to be a vital institution for the Spanish Army. Since its inception in 1974, it has been the training ground for all non-commissioned officers and members of the Military Music Corps, providing them with the foundational training necessary for their specialized roles.
