Now take that application and draw in the fact these guys could do magic and apparently had monsters with them

The only thing we didn’t get is what would happen if we could get a hold of this magic of this other world for ourselves.

@@MilesMario While awful and tragic, that is the reality of war. America did not want to go to war, but the Japanese imperial army would not back down and needed to be stopped. Have you read the trageties the Japanese army caused in china and Korea? The millions killed or forced to suffer under the japense imperial rule, its chilling. Sure America might not have had to drop such devastating bombs, but it was that or invasion of the mainland japan by american/allied forces which would have been more devastating for those innocent people. The main reason japan conceded after the second bomb is because the imperial family/ emporer understood the war was lost, the army wanted to keep on fighting to the last person even if that meant arming the civilians and innocents. It is utterly awful what happened, but this was a tragedy caused by imperial japan, not America.

There are vulnerable spots an arrow could hit and be lethal or cause severe injuries, specially knowing that they don't fly as straight as a bullet and would fall on the soldier at an angle instead. And the range bit it's true, as long as the JSDF has distance and line of sight, they're basically untouchable. But given that they're tasked with establishing peaceful relations with the inhabitants of the special region, they're forced to operate in situations where the enemy could be close enough and/or set ambushes. Not to mention that if an imperial soldier managed to get close enough to a japanese one, a sword is a VERY real threat. Modern protective armor is made for bullets, not blades. The attacker has more choices as to where and from what angle stab you to bypass the plate.

This attention to detail on military tactics and engagement SOP evolvement is what I love Gate for.

All of the stuff they have deployed past the gate is cold war era surplus they had lying around that they decided was safer to use than risk their actually modern stuff falling into an unknown enemy's hands. Also, Japan isn't the most advanced military country in the world; that's the USA. Meaning not only have the residents of the fantasy world not seen Japan's most advanced weapons, they haven't even seen *Earth's* most advanced weapons; all their monsters, demi-gods and empires are being toppled by equipment that is more liability than asset in our own modern world by how outdated and out-performed by the current day cutting edge we have now. The fantasy world is in many ways, *really lucky* that they invaded Japan and not the USA, who more than probably would be *very* interested in nation building on an entire planet to themselves (I hate to say it, but the USA really isn't above that sort of massive opportunity to further its interests).

Those were high rate of fire weapons so the guards were likely getting hit in non lethal areas multiple times before they died or were rendered unable to fight. The scary thing that caused war to change with the introduction of guns is that a commoner with little training could easily take down highly trained knights in full plate. Reliable repeating weapons increased this exponentially.

I think a hail of bullets is a less terrifying way to go than watching your own flesh being slashed

Oh! Um... The cargo cults? I could totally see that happening in this anime. The major powers in their world basically being martial prowess, magic, and powerful creatures... with advanced war tech basically seeming like another form of magic to them because they can't comprehend how metal can move almost on its own at speed (through land, water, or sky) or tear through their troops armor and dragon hide so easily.

My favorite first contact story is when a tribe in Australia have their first contact by nuclear bomb testing.

I loved it for that! It was so cool to see modern military equipment used in an Isekai anime. Not to mention that world's inhabitants reactions. GATE was just a really cool interpetation.

Any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology is more fun IMHO, but Anime already does a lot of that. There are a couple other manga/light novel series that does the modern world vs fantasy. Nihonkoku Shoukan has the entire country of Japan transported.

In addition, the JSDF when going on the offensive sticks VERY strictly to using precision strikes in an effort to eliminate any civilian casualties...with the only big exception being when they bullet helled that gang that rolled up on them when they first arrived and set up in the city, but they probably saw the civilians making themselves scarce and knew that gang was on its way to try and threaten/attack them and prepared accordingly.

Maybe they went for a budget since there are no Satellites and such orbiting around. Also there is no GPS around and other things.

They are in fact using outdated equipment intentionally. If the gate were to suddently disappear, they don't want to have to abandon equipment they can't afford to loss. That and since there is no GPS alot of the more modern equipment would loss alot of its features

The troops that went through the gate into Japan were the regular Imperial Army and included numerous human soldiers as well as beastmen. The battle afterwards, where the JDF went through and engaged the forces on the other side was where the Emperor sent the forces of other kingdoms to prevent them from rebelling.

@@hafizhgustama7935 I'm reading the novel of that series, and the update is coming very slowly, soon that series will come to a dead end, but I can say it's one of the best stories I've ever read. It's even better than Gate, especially for this type of story.

If you really loved military so much try reading manga nihonkoku shoukan and it has a novel too

@@Frost-01 would still be impossible to do tho, the gap in technology is simply too high, they'd have to invent the proper tools to make such a weapon before they can even try to succesfully reverse engineer it

@@Coalition2298qy. depends on the setting, also depends on how wide spread and common magic is on that world and its populous and how the populous view magic to be. As clearly shown in GATE despite magic and near immortal and god like beings being around for hundreds of thousands of years and with the influx of new cultures from the gate and yet the level of civilization is still that of the medival age speaks alot. Ironically the magic users are the most advanced and inquisitive but at the same time are also the most advanced in term of science, as shown in gate how they created academies and have generations upon generations of scolars, if its to be a person leilei quickly grasped earth's science and applied it to magic, thus unsurprisingly its science, as shown by leilei what she learns from science gets applied to magic to advance magic in the process, my answer's all over the place but yea, and no im not a subject matter expert im just a random guy with half ass baked knowledge, amen.
