This 70 year old grew up with Simon and Garfunkel and I was incensed when I heard a heavy metal band did a cover. Then I listened to David...and knew I'd never really heard the song before. My heart stopped, my breath left me and I cried.

I have to tell you, I have heard this song probably 400 times since it came out. I have cried and been left with goosebumps to the point of shaking almost everytime. This song speaks to my soul; the frustration, the anger, the sadness/hopelessness at the words "Fools said I you do not know, silence like a cancer grows". Many of us said, when this was first released, the original was a prophetic, almost, warning nobody listened "People hearing without listening" Now, every time you bow your head to the cell phone/tablet/laptop remember these words "And the people boed and prayed, to the neon god THEY MADE"

The "devilish" voice was the sound of DEFIANCE against the sound of silence, and the cold, empty neon lights, and the fucking loneliness. That moment he used the METAL VOICE to express anger & defiance was astonishing and absolutely top of the peak. THAT metal voice brought LIFE into the dead of the night. It was the rolling rage that metal music delivers like no other. I like metal, cause it expresses, (rather than impresses), and it really relieves from tension in the end.

David Draiman is a Classically trained opera singer as well as a Cantor. Paul Simon, who wrote the original, and sang it with Garfunkel back in the 60's, sent Draiman a letter complimenting him on this cover. Think about that for a minute.

I have the original by Simon and Garfunkel. I also have Disturbed on CD. The first time I watched this video, knowing it was Disturbed, I was thinking that they would destroy a song I loved and would say it. I listened to it and my reaction was not as extreme as the reviewer above, but pretty close. I also listened to it 3 times in a row and was more impressed every time I heard this song. I am more upset that David does not get to showcase that voice more while singing with Disturbed. What a waste of a voice.

@@robinpeterson2185 Disturbed generally does at least a cover per album.. it's an easy way to not have to write a song, get a song release, but almost all of them have been incredible, and complimentary but different to the source material. But, now as an adult, I am so thankful to my dad for introducing me to so many different types of music and genres the way he did. This cover is probably my favorite cover of any song. How many times I've heard Disturbed's version and STILL, i feel such strong emotion from it. I remember when S&G first put it out and how at that time, I thought, 'Awww .... how soft. So cutesy'. Fact is, I'm 71 now, a frustrated but published poet, and recorded singer who chucked it all away for a Marine Corps career. I've seen 2 consecutive years of war without let up. Death, destruction, pain and suffering coupled with the happiness of hope for a future of peace and tranquility were my constant companions. With this rendition, I can still feel the pain, the anger and frustration and indeed, the RAGE at a world that didn't listen. At least I also found that I can still cry and let out MY rage at a world so lost. Semper Fi, USMC Retired 1966-1989

Holy shit! I haven't heard him for a while, and even though his voice is well known to be extraordinary, in his usual performances, there's a lot more of that raspy growl he uses to such amazing effect, so the clarity and all round extraordinary beauty of his vocals isn't as clear, or it wasn't to me. This blew my mind. Wow! What's incredible, as well, is that in all his years of performing loudly with all that rasp, his voice is still so beautiful. He either discovered some secret, or has a hell of a voice coach. Loved your reaction, PW - pretty much the same as mine, and I have heard him quite a bit, though not for a couple of years. Wild!

Yeah.. his control is /perfect/ . He's sat down, reportedly was unwell during the performance, going through at least 3 different keys, adding in that growl , and switches utterly, /utterly/ perfectly/ without a hint of effort - example would be going from the rasp back to pure instantly. To call it a masterpiece of a performance, live or otherwise, is understating by a tremendous degree.

I was fortunate to first see Disturbed when they where a support act for Korn in Melbourne. My seats were crap and I was a mile away from the stage. Dave's Amp died and like the man he is he went hard without it. I got shivers then as I could here him so far away over so much noise and even in that environment was amazing. Wish I could relive it. This song was closest thing since and I love seeing it on people's faces. Keep on the road with disturbed it never stops. Loved the canoe thought process by the way.

Prince, his name is David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion and back on a dime. He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! Can sing like an angel or the devil ! Loved your reaction and your take on David's performance Prince. Good job! Try "The Night", "Deceiver", "Indestructible", "Violence Fetish" by Disturbed too.....all a tad heavier....lol...

I have heard this version about 8 times now, and each time it blows me away. It makes me want to say "Simon and Garfunkel, who are they?" Needless to say that I love Simon and Garfunkel songs but with this particular song of theirs, I'm afraid that David Draiman's Disturbed have got them beat, I could never listen to the S & G version again without hearing Disturbed. Disturbed get 2000 out of 10 from me for their rendition of this song.

I'm super late, just found this... but I've seen this performance hundreds of times and I still react the exact same way you did. It goes without saying that David has an AMAZING voice, but what I love the most about Disturbed's version of the song is that you can REALLY feel the emotion, the anger and the frustration, that the lyrics are conveying. I also LOVED that you listened to it through and didn't pause it a billion times in the middle, I feel like the song is a roller coaster and pausing it really kind of takes you out of it and takes away from the experience of the song.

This is the abnormal for them. They're a Nu-Metal band, then did this cover, and like you, everyone went, HOLY SHIT!! David Draimon, the lead singer, is classically trained. It's how he can "Fry" his voice (the Growl/Scream) and not damage his chords, its VERY hard to do. And you're right, deep tenor, to approaching alto. He has an amazing voice and range.

I very much appreciated your personal interpretation of the music of this cover. You seem, like me, to visualize when you hear music that strikes you. Your canoe down a river analogy paints a wonderful picture of what we all heard. Thank you for sharing that! The song is powerful and full of meaning to most who hear it. Not always the same meaning in words, but more similar in feeling. In the original by Simon and Garfunkel, the song plays like a lament of the soul who knows what isolation truly is. There isn't much hopefulness or optimism in the lyrics. This cover brings an entirely new feeling and image to the exact same song and lyrics. It begins soft and mournful, true to the original. As the song grows and swells, it becomes more urgent. "HEAR MY WORDS, THAT I MIGHT TEACH YOU!!" When I listen to this, my mind conjures the soft cries of an angel, mournful and defeated. But as he laments aloud, giving his grief form in words he also hears, his anger is stirred. As the song crescendos, the mournful angel has found his indignant, righteous fury at what he says and hears aloud. The sound of silence is growing. This can't be allowed to continue!! It's beautiful, tragic, and powerful. I think what is called "the sound of silence" relates to connections of people to each other, specifically words, thoughts, and feelings never shared. Whether by those who won't speak, or to those who won't listen. It's isolation of one's humanity and spirit. Made all the more powerful by distractions, pop culture, small talk, and closing yourself off to others.

I'm sorry, I do not mean to sound harsh, but I'm seriously fucking tired of people claiming the same "classically trained" bullshit about David Draiman on these videos. He was not "classically trained"; he merely trained to be a cantor in synagogue. The cantor is charged to add depth and feeling to prayers. This "classically trained" BS deducts from the fact that David's gift is far deeper than that would suggest. FFS, people, stop furthering this bullshit, and give David the credit that he deserves.
