m0a.com/ This might be the longest video we've published so let's just call it MzeroA the Movie!
Follow along with Jason and Magda as they fly from Ocala to Winter Haven, FL IFR to visit their friend Jamie Beckett from AOPA.
See inside a real-world cross country and hear the conversations between Jason and Magda as they share what it means to pursue Aviation Mastery in radio communications.

1:07:07- Right near the end of the video was enlightening..." I saw him, but didn't hear him..." These little unintended lessons help me be more aware. Thats a good lesson, something audible can be missed when flipping frequencies so keep situational awareness sharp. Just the opposite, something visual can be missed and the audible can be the life saver. I find value in Jason's long videos, they are practical application applied to real life situations.

@@MzeroAFlightTraining One more thing, I LOVE the collage of 4 video angles just after takeoff. I hope you use that tool more often as it's much easier to follow (and more pleasing to the eye) than the typical switching back and forth to different camera angles. I especially like the wide-angle view from under the left wing! I'd like to take a moment to point out (to the public) the fact that even though Jason is extremely busy running his flight school and shooting all of these videos he still makes time to reply to comments. This guy has almost 150,000 subscribers yet he's still humble enough to reply to all 22 people that commented on this video. That is rare.

Great video. Mastery: Three angles for it. 1 - Knowledge changes constantly so we must be proactive and willing to stay current. 2 - Each one of us brings our own life experience, personality and talents to flying. Therefore, we are all in our personal journey to become a more proficient and safe pilot by continuous learning. 3 - The more proficient you become at flying, the more fun you have. Nailed It! -:)

Just call me Bruce, because I guess I'm one of the Die Hards! On a side note, I find these long-form videos that actually show the hands-on, real-world process of flying more informative and helpful, than standard classes. Also, as a 55-year-old looking to change my stars, I just earned my PPL last Wed, July 26th!!

Great video to get reacquainted with radio communications. Recently took the AOPA Rusty Pilot course looking to get back in the air after way too many years. But changes like Basic Med make it possible now. Way back I had completed Commercial Certificate training, but had to stop just short of the check ride.

"Who names navigation fixes in the U.S.? When airways or procedures are being designed or modified, local FAA facility employees often recommend fix names. The FAA’s Office of Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) checks the names to make sure they are unique, pronounceable, and not obscene or controversial. Air traffic controllers have a pretty vivid imagination and a great sense of humor. There are some really clever fix names out there. It’s a small part of what makes aviation interesting and fun."

Funny IFR fixes around Budapest, Hungary (LHBP): - FAHAZ (wooden house) - GAZDA (owner of a pet or farmer) - BODZA (elderberry) - PATAK (brook, creek, rivulet, runnel) VFR entry/exit points for the LHBP CTR: - DUNAMO (the bridge of the M0 - MZero haha - motorway above the Danube river which is called Duna in Hungarian) - TSEPEL (the most northern point of Csepel island on the Danube river) - SIKATOR (junction of the M3 and M0 motorways) - KEREPES (the city of Kerepes) - MIKLOS (Hungarian for Michael) BTW I loved this longer format as well, sometimes it makes me sad that I’m across the world from you so can’t be a part of the Nation as much as I would like to be, but I’m still learning a lot from every video I watch.

Maintenace pulled my 172 in the hangar as we walked out to do my checkride. Got another plane that had radar, glass, and all the bells and whistles. Didnt know how to operate half of it. Most stressful day of my life. Flew out to the practice area and talked my way through it. His advice was to master all the equipment on everything i could so this wouldnt happen again. IFR started a week later in that plane.

51:32 That is the exact weather I experienced during my first solo cross-country, and you are right about it being a bit nerve-wracking. I remember taking off on a sunny morning with all of the metars showing 10SM visibility, only to get up and realize there was haze, and just like Magda I thought it might have been fog. I was still able to see fine and it improved as time went on. Regardless, it was a fun cross-country!

The tail number thing is definitely true. At our academy we have many different tail numbers but I find myself hear class mates flying the other planes and my ear catches the tail numbers I usually fly. I just got my commercial certificate few weeks ago and right before my checkride the tail number was changed in the plane I was most familiar with. It was a challenge for the first few calls. Great video. Thanks.

I find it funny when you were mentioning the tail numbers. A situation that happened to myself was i was learning in the same plane for several flights, then one day it was already booked so i had to fly a different one. Wasn't a big deal until the plane i normally fly was talking to the same controller and i was trying to respond to ATC. I had to stop myself several times as i wasn't flying that tail number that day.

Mastery to me is the practice of continuing to be proficient in the field of what your trying to accomplish as you excel in the phases you face, with new opportunity as time goes on you are always trying to stay ahead when being a master you can allow yourself to fluently accept the new change from having past experiences and help yourself correct the situation when new things in your mastery approach you.

The long format is excellent because it puts concepts into real-world contextual Application.I think even a multipart series For a cross country. The first video you could show how you do the flight planning and why you’re doing what you’re doing, you could do it old-school on paper, and then show how you use ForeFlight, then show you flying The flight and teaching lessons along the way. The best form of teaching is role-play and showing in real time. So I’m all for this long format and even expanding up on it Also I think another thing that would be really awesome would be a series where you go flying with private pilots who earned their certificate but aren’t using it to its full potential because either their training felt lacking or they’re just uncomfortable going certain places or doing certain things I’d like to be able to do, and walking them through how to get over those issues. Maybe go flying to places they want to go fly to but don’t really feel comfortable doing it. Of course they could always go hire an instructor to do that it would be awesome to see it on your channel.

As most of us who go through the rusty pilot syndrome that aren't fortunate to regularly fly either professionally or are rich enough to always maintain currency much less proficiency at various times through our lives feeding our addiction to flying, have to laugh at the "exhausting to maintain mastery" comment. Having gotten my first license way back in 1985 and instrument rating a few years later in 1991 prior to GPS during the golden age of mastering ADF-NDB, VOR and ILS approaches, learning to initially use GPS after returning to the air following a series of rusty pilot sabbaticals was struggle just for VFR use much less IFR with varying GPS units in different rental aircraft. Now as a retiree with fewer reasons for surprise financial rusty pilot sabbaticals and much more time to study excellent resources such as MzeroA videos and other flight training videos on KZfaq, amazing progress is being made toward currency, proficiency and even mastery of communications and IFR procedures by this old but not so rusty pilot. Thanks for your great videos!

I had an IAF the other day DRBOB, I wanted to use it to do the complete procedure turn. I had zero idea as to how to "officially" say it so ATC would understand me so I just said Doctor Bob. ATC apparently uses it that way, as he understood and continually referred to it as Doctor Bob.
