The origin of this beautiful song, “La Golondrina”, is convoluted, multinational, and extraordinary. The lyrics is inspired on a poem, an ode to exile, written, precisely in exile in North-Africa by al-bin Humeya (Granada, Spain, circa 1545 ? - Rabat, Morocco circa 1570), the last king of Al Pujarras (Granada), an Abencerraje (Moors of al-bin-Serragh Arab lineage). Spanish poet José Zorrilla y Moral ((Valladolid, February 21, 1817 - Madrid, January 23, 1893) “borrowed” from al-bin Humeya for his own short poem “Al Objeto de Mi Amor” (“To the Object of My Love) from wich, late,r Niceto de Zamacois, a Basque historian, poet, and composer living in Mexico (Bilbao, Vizcaya, Spani, December 5, 1820 ¬- Mexico City, Mexico, October 30, 1885) wrote the letter for “La Golondrina”, which Narciso Serradell Sevilla, a Mexican (son of Catalonian father and Mexican mother) physician, and composer arranged with his own music for a music contest in Mexico as the worldwide known and sung song “La Golondrina”. The French occupiers of Mexico arrested Sarradell-Sevilla and sent him to exile in France, his song having become the motive song of Mexicans in exile at the time in France. The song became a world song for farewell and exile, death being, by antonomasia, the ultimate of all farewells and exiles.
