John choosing Wingdings is probably the biggest self-sabotage I've seen in a task since Q.

Perhaps of the unintentional variety. I think the biggest, or at least most spectacular, intentional self-sabotage was during the balloon/portculus task from Series 12 when Desiree bought an entire bucket of forks for 1 hour when the scissors cost only 8 minutes. David Baddiel in the back drawing task doesn't count because he was sabotaging Ed and was merely collateral damage. All that said, John's self-sabotage was only bad because he managed to forget what he wrote and couldn't reproduce it later. Those signs were still possible to follow unlike a few of Fern's. John seems destined to self-sabotage even worse later in the series.

@@RToast13 Lamination is inherently a thing we do to documents to make them last a long time... Your complaint feels ironic... But I don't understand the concept of irony... All that comes to mind is "I got my sterile uncle pregnant on my girlfriend's pull out couch" and that isn't even a correct quote of those song lyrics cause obviously you can't get your sterile uncle pregnant I just mixed up the order for no apparent reason yet chose to say it anyways knowing it's wrong... Cause I'm fucking insane. Fucking toodles!!!

@@RToast13 They are using consumer-level equipment and software. As a certified professional wide format printer, I can confirm that this is the slowest way to make paper signs with overlaminate. I can laminate 100s of posters that size in one minute. Industrial equipment/software makes a big difference.

Actually John is sort of right. Wingdings gives you different symbols depending on the caps lock key. He wrote sign in capital letters but then caps lock was off when he tried to recreate it on the laptop.

Yup. That’s because upper case and lower case are different Unicode characters. If you really want to confuse people use characters that look like Latin characters (a) but aren’t (а)

8:46 when Munya pulls the sign out of the laminator and it lands on the seat in the other row, I wonder if they included that one or not - the sort of thing I was expecting Alex to wait until the end before bringing up in his usual "gotcha" way, but he never did!

When I saw the task, I started thinking "Who is gonna be doing these instructions" and thinking of simple things like "lift your right leg" "lift your left leg" as easy things write, but also easy things to do. Watching this show so much has given me a sixth sense for when there's a second task coming.

My immediate instinct was that it would be _another_ contestant following my instructions, and whoever got the most done the slowest would win. So I would've done possible but time-consuming instructions, and lost lol

Agree! I was there before even the second task appearing with all my signs saying: " Say "1" Say "2" Say "3" And so on. Very easy to come up with a very large number of instructions (presumably Excel was on the computers, allowing each sheet to be automatically populated with multiple instructions lines) and obeying would've been a breeze....

Haven't listened to the podcast episode yet, so they may have mentioned it, but the reason the Wingdings didn't match up is he typed the sign in upper case. When he was running around with the laptop, he was using lower case-which obviously has different symbols.

My idea was to make signs with an action and change the number only. So it's quick to type and print Ex hop 1x, Hop 2x, hop 3x etc So I'd have been hopping a lot lol

A reason why the wingdings symbols changed could be because he typed them in different cases, the symbols change if they are uppercase / lowercase.

My immediate thought was actually to exploit the rule "each sign must have a different instruction". I would have printed off many signs that all said "sit in this seat". Placing them on different seats changes the sign's instruction. Would have worked perfectly for the part 2 to the task too.

@@AtomixKingg Pretty good. I think I wouldn't have been that clever, but I would have tried it programmatically. First sign says clap 1 times, second sign says clap 2 times, etc. Do it in a spreadsheet to get as many as you like.

I'd have just made my signs clap 1 time Clap 2 times Clap 3 times Quick and easy to replicate and print and would have worked well for 2nd half to 😂

Yeah I thought about that too. You could copy "times! {new line} Clap" and then just hit CTRL+V 1 CRTL+V 2 CTRL+V 3 and so on. You'd get a lot of tasks on one paper, then after laminating it you can cut it and distribute it. Then when the second part of the task was shown I imediatly thought this way would be brilliant for it too. Just Clap for 3 minutes. Because you don't have to say when you start a new task... so the production crew would have to count all your claps to see how many tasks you'ce done.

I love laminators so much. I wish I had something to laminate now. I’m surprised by the lack of knowledge on laminating. I used to laminate things all the time as a little kid. At least once a month when I was like 5. It was very useful.

Yeah, it bugged me that they gave John grief about whether his signs were instructions, but Dara was given points for "The Gruffalo" and "Muntjack Deer" which are clearly not instructions. He wrote "Watch out for" on the top of the pages and then just had a list of different things, but once you separate, laminate and put all the pieces on the different seats, only the first one's on each page that included the "Watch out for" are actually instructions, so his total should have been 1 for each page he printed, which was about 2 or 3.

There is often NO NEED AT ALL to set *any* of the tasks on location, but clearly it's a production decision to add some variety to the show both visually and in terms of the objects available to the contestants.

To be fair if I remember right Ardal O'Hanlon was pretty terrible in the first couple of episodes last series but bounced back later on and scored a couple of wins (so basically the opposite of Alice Levine), But then again that series had Judi Love to balance things out, this one... not so much

Here I was thinking I could write "take 1 step" in the top cell of an Excel sheet and drag down, thus creating "take 2 steps", "take 3 steps", etc. Then I could copy-paste into a document and create a page break between each instruction and hit print on 40 instructions. Laminate while they're printing, keep it to 12 pt font to speed up page dispersal. Then, all I would need to do in the second part of the task would be to take 820 steps.

So many people apparently saw this or any "follow up" task coming... I didn't, i'm hopelessly naive in these things, but i wonder how much rational foresight anyone can actually have left in these kinds of stressful situations. And don't be fooled, for most comedians to be on national telly with the need to be funny is stressful, no matter how talented they are. I remember people like Lee Mack comment on how they went in complete panic mode.

Could you set the font size to super tiny and do like 50 on a page and then cut it up and place the tiny ones for speed.

Dara and Fern both did multiple signs per sheet. The video shows them using a cutter that was provided for them. That is the obvious way to go since the laminator does not have a Fast setting, much to Munya's chagrin.

First thing I thought of for signs was basic instructions. Sit. Stand. Kneel. Point your finger. etc. Glad to see I would have aced the second section.

I immediately recognized this was a trap and wanted someone to make a sign that said "Breathe for at least 0.01 seconds" and then increment the duration by 0.01 seconds for each new sign.

My first though was print the following signs. This is seat 1. go to seat 2 If non exist go to seat 1 Then just continue to increment the signs. Until I ran out of time.
