How to print images, text and company logos on bicycle card stock - US Playing Cards. steffansoule.com Rub the finish off with Acetone, place the card on a template with removable tape and run it through an inkjet printer. Spray it with Krylon #1306 Workable Matte Fixative, and voila. See also Hand Eye Coordination, a specially printed magic trick using Bicycle cards.

Thank you very much for these ideas. I used your method to make my own cards. Instead of acetone I use alcohol 96%, that works really well and pretty fast. And for my finish I prefer the glossy spray instead of the matte. The result looks awesome. Thank you and have a great magical time!

To line it up I would print it once with out the card then cut out the template then there you lined it up. Simple

I came here to say this. Generate a document with the printing card dimensions lined out then use that document as your template by cutting out the hole.

Hello hello hello, I was thinking on making a card game and wanted to ask if you had any success in your process? What cards you bought? How did you design the cards? Etc
@SteffanSoule

I used computers to design everything. I think this is best for a small quantity. Once could do an entire deck I suppose, but it would be a very dedicated work.

You can buy printers that keep the paper flat (Shaun Farquar does this) though this works very well with one card.

Sorry, I am new to this. Well I think you can print the rectangle and then use that to trace your cut out. It is best to use trial and error with regular paper until the print is perfect. Then use the actual cards.

I think this is the best method I've seen for making home made gaff cards so far. I want to know, how did the finished product compare next to a genuine card, with regards to colour (white), texture, thickness, finish and slip? ie: would it stand out in a fan because the white is different? Does it slide similar to regular cards, would it clump in a fan?, Is the thickness detectable if it's in the middle of a deck? In the six years since you made this video have you made any advances in this method? Thanks for great video, I'll let you know how it goes when I try it out. Kind Regards, Marcus.

He bud I understand how to make the template but you forgot to show us how to set the setting for the printing proces. I mean if I just put the card in the template what's to stop the printer from hitting the rest of the template and not the card. Lol I could really use your hope cause I'm gonna use this info to print on my blank Munchkin cars. Thank you so much.

Any advice for the image to not come out blotchy compared to using standard letter paper? Is there a setting to change it to?
@SteffanSoule
@SteffanSoule 2 жыл бұрын
The Paper (card face or back) must be really free of previous coating for ink to stay properly. From there, the printer settings must be compared for each individual case. It sometimes means the ink is too much. One can wipe it clean sometimes after a print but that is also no fun.

Would that spray work to give finished cardstock cards for example the Star Wars Sabacc cards a playing card like finish?
@SteffanSoule
@SteffanSoule 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. The finish can be more or less depending on what you want. Many thin coats can lead you to various levels of finish from matte to gloss.

How did u set the printer to print exactly on that allowed area of the card
@SteffanSoule
@SteffanSoule 6 жыл бұрын
You set the art up in the document and print and adjust until you get it. Best case is you master the program and printer, such that you force the art, the printer and the program into a mathematical relationship that works. It is not easy. Printing on regular paper and holding the result up to the Template in bright light with eagle eyes and then tweaking it (print again, hold it up again) until everything lines up perfectly is a valid approach.

Basically this is true; there is nobody. I bought PlainCards (or something like that) a few years ago, and they were pretty good but they have problems too. They recently sent me a going out of business sale offer. It was a template that you can break out of the sheet due to perforations. It was not perfect. The only real way to get cards that perform at the high level that we need, other than this that I show here, is to pay a large amount to Bicycle or other major playing card companies. Lybrary.com has a tutorial on this too. They actually bought a truck load of the real playing card paper! Then they do something like what I am doing here.

I tried it, but too much ink is loaded onto the card. I then tried printing as matte paper in the printer setup, and also in draft mode, text mode, regular paper mode, and still too much ink is loaded, and it tends to smear and look irregular. What's the secret? The method I've been using is to simply glue 16 lb. printer paper onto the card, trim it with an x-acto knife, round the corners with a 3mm radius corner cutter (or scissors, if a cutter is not available), then use a simple template to run it thru the printer. Works perfectly, but probably takes a little longer than your method, so I am interested in finding out why your method smears or loads too much ink onto a blank card cleaned with acetone. Thanks! By the way, I am printing graphics (color images, like photos of people, etc.) rather than just text or solid black.

Gotta make sure it's laserjet, not inkjet. Laserjet loads and quickly dries the ink on its own, while inkjet just throws the ink on and lets it dry, iirc.
@SteffanSoule
@SteffanSoule 9 жыл бұрын
I use INKJET and have had trouble with laserjet! One has to work with ink levels, yes! It is not easy. If there is any finish on the cards, the ink will smear. If you use basic printing and not BEST, the ink delivers the right amount for my printers.

Making a template is simple: get 100 lb paper, use your drawing program to create and print a rectangle the same size as a playing card. Save that drawing file for later use. Then lay a piece of double-sided removable tape right near the top of that rectangle image you just printed, making sure the tape is inside the rectangle. That is now your template! Then, place and fit your "treated" card onto that rectangle. Then insert it into your printer's hopper so that the taped portion represents the top of the image. Then, using your drawing program, paste your desired image onto that rectangle. Then temporarily delete or somehow hide (using your drawing program's layers capability) the rectangle so that it itself doesn't print. Then print! That one piece of double-sided removable tape holding the top of the card is sufficient to hold it as it runs through your ink-jet printer. I use this method all the time and works great. If you're ambitious, you can create and print maybe 4 or more rectangles, save the drawing file you used to create them, and now you have a simple yet effective template for simultaneously printed multiple cards, as many as will fit on a piece of paper. Good luck!

I did not post it recently and I may have lost the template, but...: If you print the rectangle on the actual printer and make a template by trial and error, you will actually have better results in the long run.

Magic effects with cards require real, high quality cards. They will fail with cards that have paper stuck to their front. Acetone is still required. The INK... well I tried a printing company like Office Depot with high quality color laser printers, but it was too hot. The heat ruined the tape. I have never owned a color laser printer. If you find one that works, please let me know. One must turn the ink quality DOWN to make it so the ink does not get too thick. Every printer is different. This is actually a bit hard to do. The TEMPLATE. That is not easy to create. It must be exact. One must build it oneself for clarity. Mine might not work for your printer. It is just a window in the cardstock lined up with a document, but it takes adjusting (many test runs) to get the perfect alignment.

Too messy, too problematic, and too time consuming to rub off with acetone. Just get some good inkjet printer paper, or better: photo paper with matte finish. Lay down 8 blank cards face up, arranged to fit on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. Spray lightly with spray adhesive, then carefully lay that sheet of photo paper. Roll with a brayer, trim, and you're done. You might want to first place a mask to prevent adhesive on the margins; remove the mask when done, then roll with a brayer. Another method, if you don't need high quality matte paper, simply get full sheets of shipping label paper. Peel off the sticky-back protective sheet, lay the paper down with the sticky-back up, then carefully lay blank cards down on it with the blank sides down (of course). Roll with a brayer, then trim. You're done in a couple of minutes!
