After working as a freelance system designer and printmaker, Fergal Coulter specialises in designing a system capable of 4D printing silicone artificial muscles. His team has been exploring how advanced 3D printing technology can create structures that induce a change in form.
After working as a freelance system designer, printmaker and musician, Fergal Coulter now specialises in designing a system capable of 4D printing silicone artificial muscles, which contain varying levels of elastic strain throughout the object's layers. His research interests include cardiac assist devices, soft robotics, printed electronics, bio-sensors, and 3D printing and scanning on inflated structures.

Robots might be less scary if they're squishy like us. 100% for soft robotics.

This makes me think of reaction wood in trees. I wonder if any 3D printing techniques could be developed from studying how pre-stressed wood fibers are grown in place?

He is probably whispering because he tends to talk loudly and is trying to control his voice.

Maybe he could work for darpa and work on robotics. See if he could mimic the human musculature on a skeletal structure.

The problem I keep running into is why we still use old robotic arms that are ran with servo motors on robots like "Pet Man" from DARPA..... Why don't they just use the newest prosthetic arm?? Instead of spending all of their Military money on creating the Human like robot in the first place, they should fund their researches to create a electro conductive polymer or something.

Nice talk but it would be nice if the speaker does not smack his mouth/lips intentionally at the end of every sentence. You know its coming when he furrows his brow and then....SMACK.

Oh my God this guy is annoying. Not good with expressing people skills or talking in general. As an engineer with a high level understanding and application of this subject it bored me to death. This is an old technique and not as leading edge as other better and more flexible methods. How is this only from 2016? Just because it's mated with 3D printing? So far nothing beats a zebtube as an artificial muscle.

I've only just learning and fascinated by these videos recently, but I wondered: is this man not talking about creating bioanimation materials to be used within human/animal bodies whereas the zebtubes are for machinery, like robotics?

Jim Furey There is some projection detected, starting with the discussion of expressing a desire towards concluding that there is a god, and that it's your god, and to suggest that you have a high degree of cognition, if to be compared with that person who made the effort to follow through with their most helpful concept. That tone of superiority must seem impressive to those around you.
