Brings back fond memories .. my late father was a printer, and expert Linotype operator. He taught me the trade as a teen at the Trenton High School Vocational School where he taught printing for 22 years … the C&P was always my favorite

Love your presentation and your C&P press. I like the way you do things to produce a quality job. I had an old G. P. Gordon press in the 1950's and I loved it. I was a young teenager and Ben Franklin was my idol. There is something that is magical about letterpress printing. Thanks.

Amazing Press, Glad seeing the press & the process is still around. The printing results are still very special, there's nothing like Letter Press quality.

Danielle, I wish I had seen this series of videos 10 years ago! I have been printing for a long time but I still found so many tidbits of advice that I know will really help me in the future - from the AI demos to the platen press demos. I have 2 C&P 10x15s and can't wait to try the soft paper guides on them. I have dinged my Boxcar base and smashed many kort adjustable gauge pins ) : . Thank you for these beautifully produced instructional videos!

I was trying to explain this to someone and looked it up...Ahh, really makes me happy, brings back fond memories. I had totally forgotten about adding backing, but now it's all coming back..melting wax over the "clips" (looks like she has blue tape instead of the melted wax, in case that didn't make sense), etc. Such a different world from CLICK-AND-GO!

Nice video Danielle. I own a similar press and use much the same process with foundry type. I like your style of commenting. I am a Graphic Design prof and value slow, well spoken instructions. Great work.

Thanks for sharing your letterpress process. I do agree with you on printing slowly and making sure of the paper set in neatly that is one neat process. definitely helps in getting the finished product perfect, It would have been nice though, to see the results on the 600 GSM paper with the camera zoomed in.

What the heck is 600 GSM Paper? Back in the day we called it 110 pound index stock. Yes, I was a printing press operator for City of Los Angeles. But that was 40 years ago. Yikes!!!!!
@PantheraPress
@PantheraPress 5 жыл бұрын
@@jerrymead3726 GSM is grams per square meter, it tends to be more consistent across stocks when comparing thickness. 300gm is equivalent to 110lb and 600gm is equivalent to 220lb when it comes to most cotton papers.

You should use liquid glycerin on your fingertips to aid your feeding, and get your belt centered on the flywheel, even at the slow pace you are printing if it came off it could injure you and damage your press. You need to learn to feed with one hand, two hands in the press is a good way to get injured.

I have been trying to get that stupid belt centered for ages. I tried building up tape in the center (I remember someone telling me that wheels/cams that have belts on them are raised in the center to keep the belt in place) and it didn't work. I've tried adjusting the angle of the motor and nothing I've done will keep it centered. The belt definitely flings itself off occasionally, but all the happens is the press slows down to a stop it would be no different than suddenly letting off the treadle, it just loses momentum. It always hangs off the left edge, and my particular motor is designed in such a way that there is no risk of it coming off towards the press and tangling. I will definitely look into the glycerin. With compressible pins sometimes I have to use two hands as they have drag on the paper. I feel it is safer to feed in a consistent, quick way (if two handed) than to have constant misfeeds and risk chasing a print by instinct. With regular pins I can feed normally. Not saying you aren't correct though. Fewer hands in the press at a time is obviously better. Thank you for your advice.

@@PantheraPress To center the belt is just a matter of aligning the motor pulley with the throw-wheel. You need to make sure the two are on the same plane, and your problems will go away. The tape is not really helping, and may actually be forcing the belt to the outside. The belt also appears to be much too large for the wheel, if it is hanging off of either side of the wheel it will pull to that side. They make thinner belts these days which are much easier to use, and they have a glued connection so you don't have to used the belt clamps you have taped over.

Efficient hand feeding can be helped by using rubber fingerettes, they have small nipple that grip.

I hated working in the printing industry, the boss/owner employed only cheap labour into his business and he was a right piece of SHIT to work for... The typeface was all battered and completely worn out through years of use and the owner would never replace any of it; trying to do make-ready with battered typefaces was a nightmare... The printing machines in his business were not much better (all clapped out machinery), if a part needed replacing, he would not bother, instead the machines were held together with sellotape and string. I have no fond memories in the printing industry and I was glad to get out!

I sympathize because I’m currently in a bad employment situation. But your experience isn’t a reflection of the industry or printers in general. Many printers today are rescuing old machines and restoring them for use and learning a method of printing that can be so much more satisfying than sitting at a computer. I highly recommend the documentary Pressing On. It is so inspiring. It’s unfortunate you were left with such a negative impression.

I did the voiceover after everything was shot, and was doing a production job where I didn't have time to stop too often. Some things were only determined when I looked back and the footage and remembered what I was thinking. Likewise, I only had a tripod that I couldn't really get right on the press so I wasn't able to get every shot alone in the shop.
