As per your question in the beginning about why Europa is such a common sci-fi setting, the reason is that it's one of the more feasible locations in our solar system to create a habitable environment via terraforming or some other sci-fi method. There are a handful of reasons for this, such as it being similar in composition to a terrestrial planet and the presence of water in the form of an underground ice ocean.
@revolverocelot6334
@revolverocelot6334 Жыл бұрын
Afaik it's not similar in composition, radiation on the surface is also terrible due to Jupiter, it's redeeming quality is the fact that it most likely has liquid water ocean under the ice, but it's not even the only one, there's probably a dozen of such bodies with theorized or "extremely likely to exist" oceans.

For whatever it's worth I'd like to see ya continue this. I don't have anyone else I like who's playin' it but I really want to watch through it. The combat does look a little weird but, from the descriptions at least, it seems like maybe it'd build some nice tension once you're used to it, trying to weave back and forth in really tense moments against multiple enemies and find a break to counter.

theradbrad recently finished a let's play of callisto. he's a huge dead space fan and he enjoyed callisto a lot. one thing i'm getting annoyed by is people dismissing callisto as being melee based, it's not. it's gun play is equally as good as dead space at times, and a skilled player will switch between melee, ranged and environmental attacks like throwing enemies off ledges, into meat grinders, spike traps and even slowing down other enemies by throwing them into each other. the legs can be shot off enemies causing them to crawl along the ground like zombies. it's also not all set inside the prison, there are outdoor areas that are like a cross between dead space 3 and aliens. i also really like the variety of monsters, again a heavy influence from dead space here, which isn't surprising considering it's made by some of the same devs. people talk so much crap about this game without knowing all it has to offer, and yet at the same time praise dead space. yes callisto isn't as polished as dead space 1 and 2, but it's subjectively better than a lot of other horror games based on the atmosphere and mechanics. i would say the melee and story are it's weakest components.

agreed, some of the ray traced lighting is cutting edge for the industry. there are a few lighting issues i noticed, but overall it's a leap forward in atmospheric lighting. the poly count is also very high for a lot of the models, and the pbr materials are very realistic looking, making them react well to the light. graphics wise they just need to polish it more and optimize it for current hardware, but 5 or 10 years from now this could be the standard for triple a games.

I think the Dead Space compilation was one of the first videos I watched on this channel. Haha you've come along way controlling your fears when playing scary games Welonz! :D I've somewhat enjoyed this game myself: the awesome graphics, creepy setting and intruiging premise, the familiar holographic menus (for Dead Space fans), these were all pros for me personally. The plot, characters and horror elements (mostly gore) were not as compelling as I hoped. The potential was there but alas. Single combat gameplay worked well for me, fighting multiple enemies didn't. As well as some issues with awkward camera angles I experienced during and out of combat (sudden extreme close ups obstructing the players 3rd person view mostly). And then there were the performances drops. This was like a B-scifi horror movie: it can be a fun ride if you can overlook certain shortcomings and not compare it with a franchise that did this type of game better imo.

I don't know if you've been playing off camera since posting this, but when you find boxes that look like they might be something, try stomping on them if they don't give you an open option. Also, don't forget to stomp EVERYBODY you kill. The combat can be a bit hard to get used to, but you generally want to dodge a swing then try to hit them back. A or D are dodge while S is block. You WILL take some damage when blocking though so dodging is generally a better idea. Congrats on finding the shower area. I missed that in my playthrough. The reason you didn't really get anything is because you forgot to loot the enemies (till you went back) and didn't know to stomp the blue box. You do get guns a bit later in the game, but ammo isn't all that plentiful so you'll still be doing some melee to save ammo. If you liked DeadSpace, the remake is out at the time of me posting this and it's very cool. I found it to be both easier and harder than Callisto Protocol in some ways. Like you, I thought CP was an ok game. Not spectacular, but playable if you like the sci fi horror type thing.

welonz, if you read this keep in mind that youtube is currently setting age restrictions to some videos of dead space 1 or 2, so even reviewers who have recently talked about the original games are finding their videos can be demonetized. apparently brad had censored several scenes in his callisto let's play, which is very disappointing because i want to see everything the game has to offer, and i really don't like jump cuts in the middle of action sequences. being an adult, i believe i'm old enough to be able to responsibly handle the content of a video game, without it inspiring me to act out in real life the entertainment that i consume. i imagine most sane people feel the same. it also seems random which videos get age restricted. there doesn't appear to be any clear rules defining which type of content not to show to the general audience, so it's a luck of the draw for youtubers. my point is if you play the new dead space game, you might have to censor it, if you intend to earn money from ad revenue. if you do, i recommend informing your audience at the time that you're being forced to do this by youtube, rather than censoring because you're making moral judgements about the content of video games aimed at mature audiences.

It's kind of interesting how the OG Dead Space shifted the genre paradigm from the classical "survival horror" to more "action-oriented horror with few survival elements", and now Callisto Protocol went fully into the realm of "story-hard action-slasher horror". ...On that point, continuation of *Signalis* when.

Your closing thoughts were exactly what I thought when I played it. The general presentation is really excellent, a great looking and sounding game but the gameplay and general tone/scares don't seem to quite come together. It does get a bit better later although I did wish they'd got into the plot a lot quicker. At the outset though the scares just feel very unearned. Full disclosure - I haven't finished it yet, got distracted by the much more fun than expected High on Life. I mean to go back to it. The combat/melee is very clunky though I agree.

Glad that you did a first look on it, and yeah you can see the (huge) progress you've made in playing horror games since your original Dead Space video :D The game looks cool but also a bit average in some areas. That stealth part with the security droid where it talks out loud basically only for the player's sake as it makes no sense that it would say all this stuff to itself, that was pretty silly lol The main critic I've seen about this game is that the gameplay feels a bit irresponsive and random, which seems to match your experience. From the first look it also seems like the kind of horror game that relies on jumpscares instead of managing to create a constant dread. I'd watch it if you keep going but also more interested in your take on SIGNALIS (or one of these days Alien Isolation).

I got really curious after that intro and I was hoping for a full lets play, but o well Third.- The reason europe is often reference in sci-fi genre it's twofold. On one side, it's rather similar to earth in diameter and composition. On the other side, it's a major plot point in "2001 a space odisie" which influence on the sci-fi genre cannot be overstated

welonz, i know you weren't impressed with the 1st hour of callisto, but if you intend to play dead space, it would be sensible in my opinion to practice the various ranged mechanics in callisto, since several of them are almost identical to the original dead space versions. this isn't a genre of game where you just run past or walk around shooting enemies in the head, it's much more tactical than that. sure you can try to go for head shots in both dead space and callisto, but the devs anticipated some players would rely on that, and often the enemies morph into more aggressive forms if players shoot or knock their heads off. anyway, it's your channel so of course play what you think you and your audience will enjoy the most. personally, i'm loving watching other youtubers mastering the mechanics in callisto. for example, theradbrad said once he finished his youtube recordings, he was going to play it again off camera because he found it so satisfying overall, despite him too not liking the melee weapons, until he leveled them up several times, and he doesn't use the dodge unless he has to. he agrees the callisto devs tried a few new things and they weren't all successful, but that didn't detract from the nostalgia he feels with this game. if you weren't aware brad's been on youtube for over 12 years and his avatar is still the main character from dead space, so he's a huge fan of this genre. yes dead space was the first but it doesn't have to be the only game to use these mechanics and creepy atmospheric maps.

welonz, please don't give up on callisto until you've at least tried the gun play. if this is the only part of the game you've seen then you're missing out. it gets a lot more exciting. some players try to mainly use the melee when they could be shooting limbs and heads off of enemies. also the ranged attacks can work very effectively when the enemies are thrown or blasted into environmental hazards. some of those can kill or remove enemies in a single hit, which is very useful when there are areas full of enemies. yes the game isn't as polished as the 1st two dead space games, although in my opinion it's one of the better horror games released in the last year, at least comparable to scorn.

how many other games allow the player to pick up enemies and throw them into meat grinders or spikes? i can only think of a few that have done that over the last decade. the callisto gun play is very similar to dead space, including the dismemberment. for example the player can slow down enemies by shooting their legs off, causing them to have to crawl along the floor. that's not a common mechanic. if you are basing your opinion off the little that welonz showed here, that's not a good representation of everything the game has to offer.
