This is a quick clip of how to repair a faulty capacitor in a second generation 2004 - 2009 Toyota Prius out of my other video "Prius no dash lights" the failed capacitor causes the instrument cluster to not work. Other common symptoms of this weak capacitor includes the door indicator light not working, the back hatch not opening, no dash lights, intermittent lights & the vehicle not shutting off. Also any problems relating to the start button, park switch & gear selection. A whole lot of stuff relying on one stupid capacitor failing. This has fixed my car and I've been driving it for weeks now with no issues

I love the way you illustrate the actual repair and omit the rest, since there are tear-down videos already posted. Your close-up videography is outstanding and perfectly focused, allowing one to see the area close-up. I have the intermittent problem now and for the last year or so- mainly when below 40" F. Thanks for posting this very specific video.. Like Tanasi Tim, I'm also trying to get the nerve - just waiting on part from Amazon. Only concern is the clips to the dash pieces not fitting together as tight as before when putting everything back together. Car has no rattles now and don't want any LOL!

Thanks John for this clip! Just what I was looking for. We've removed the board and have the 220uF ready to go. I've watched some great electronics soldering videos for tips (high heat/short time, etc), but I was stymied by the difference between how the old capacitor is attached vs the new one will be. One prius fix site commenter suggested reinforcing the new attachment with electronics grade silicone for this kind of connection...

Over time vibration could easily crack the solder joints, if you lay it down flat and hot glue it to the PCB it will be much more secure.

My mechanic told me I should replace all 10 capacitors with increased voltage ratings so that it could handle more power, also because you never know when the next ones will go out. Here are the replacement specs for the ones I used and are working in my car currently =) 10uf - 35v original > 10uf - 50v replacement 100uf - 16v original > 100uf - 25v replacement 22uf - 63v original > 22uf - 100v replacement 330uf - 35v original > 330uf - 50v replacement 100uf - 50v original > 100uf - 63v replacement

I have to do this myself. Thanks for posting this. Though I plan to piggyback a new capacitor over the existing one.

Why does everyone always skip the most important part, which is the actual soldering part :(

Did you find that replacing the capacitor with a higher voltage of 200 affected the performance of the car or anything? Curious before I replace mine. What is the reason for the higher voltage? Just curious

Does this mean that, in most cases, Prius owners DO NOT need to replace the entire combination meter? Thanks anyone for responding.

Worked perfect! I picked up a capacitor for $0.50 at a local electronics shop and used this video to get the dash apart kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pshhbNNp37_JhJs.html . Took me about 3 hours total...not bad at all, especially since I hadn't used my soldering iron in maybe 5 years.
