Great video. This coaching style is one of the most beneficial. A lot of people are bashing Brian and giving him tips but think about it. This guy has been playing for many many years as an elite player in the US and coaching as well. I think he knows what he's doing and how to coach. He knows his students and how they learn better than any of us does.

Its been years since i wrote a youtube comment, but i just wanted to say thank you for uploading your videos. You do your best on explaining how to play table tennis and your videos are really helpful for anyone who want to improve :). Some people criticized your way of coaching, to that I say : variety is very important in trying to learn something and i strongly believe that your tips that sometimes differ from mainstream coaching are useful not just because they are informative but also because you can see the same thing explained from a different angle and that truly helps to see a bigger picture :)

Hello Coach, first best regards from france, about the backand of your student, he always bend his body on his left side at the end of the stroke and it seems to me he often hit the ball on its right side so he s giving a kind of small lateral rotation on the ball. i think you should change his backand technique if you have the time to do it. first starting with the bat really lower in front of his belly, then moving the bat from down to high trying to hit the ball with more friction and then at the end of the stoke his bat should be more in front of him, going forward in the direction of the ball going away.,he should also try to use his wrist in a more effective way. i am sure you know every point i mentioned i can see on his tournement than most of his attack strokes on both sides are flat with a lack of rotation. this is a lot of work to do and you will need a little more lessons to train your student on his backand. i think in france he should be around 900 points ranking, my best was 1500 and my backand was always natural and my best stroke. it s funny as i am 1 m 94 cm, with long arms so i have a backand with a lot of power or rotation only with my arm ,my power is coming from my shoulder then my arm then my wrist i am getting older and my legs don't want to move....... or i don't want to move my legs simply..... best regards coach and thanks for your high quality video

I don't get the relationship between the coaching session (where thrust from the legs in the backhand attack was determined to be the major flaw to cure) and the tournament analysis (where good placement with the forhand attack was the major asset perceived). Did you give up on training the backhand attack and replace it with developing the placement? Or are these just unrelated snippets from a whole analysis repository on this player?
@DynamicTableTennisTV
@DynamicTableTennisTV 9 жыл бұрын
***** There has to be some thrust from the legs to complete the stroke. It won't be like the forehand loop, but it is important that the legs aren't inactive during the backhand loop. The reason that we work on this specific drill was to get him to improve his backhand opening attack, that needs more development. It was to also improve the ability to set the backhand up in a sequence of play. What you see in the tournaments is the player doing what he was most comfortable with, which is the forehand loop. I could tell him to keep running the forehand attack, but as a coach I have to focus on helping him develop a balance attack approach. l

IMHO, think he's confused when you said "no legs." When he is hitting the backhand without using the body and legs behind it it would be more beneficial to stop him right then and there and show him how it's done correctly.

luke patel If someone is paying me to be critical of their game because they want to improve two levels by the end of the year, it is important to tell them the truth. When you say I was harsh, I was being "Truthful". If you are wanting to improve, then you have to focus on being an athlete and take your feeling out of the equation. I'm a private coach. I'm pay by the lesson. If I was dealing with my students in a way that was disrespectful and rude, I would have been able to do this job for over 20 years. As a coach, I can only take on the aspirations of my student. If I'm more vocal with my student, it is because that is what they respond to in a positive way.

the trainee doesnt have the proper technical background for training strategy. Most of his strokes are novice quality (serving, pushing, backhand topspin). He should work each stroke independently until they get decent enough to work them in combination.
@DynamicTableTennisTV
@DynamicTableTennisTV 9 жыл бұрын
Emmanuel Dufour Who decides what players is ready for training in strategy? Not you! Not me! It is the client that is paying you to teach them. Just because their technique is not perfect doesn't mean they don't have the aptitude to develop strategy, because they play off each other during the process of development and elevation. The client is a doctor and he lets me know what he wants to work on, and my job is to focus on that. According to your training Arc, you are going to lose a lot of students because you won't allow the development to happen organically, as well as according to the needs and wants of your client. If you are interested in being a coach, then you should also learn to listen to your client.
@emmanueldufour7595
@emmanueldufour7595 9 жыл бұрын
DynamicTableTennisTV The trainee can be wrong like any client in any business, yes you have to listen to them but it's better in the long run to tell "dear client, your money would be better spent doing this or that" when you feel you should, then of course if they insist they can have it their way. By "client is wrong" and "money better spent" , in this case I mean the trainee would see his game improve faster in the long run. In this very specific case the return on investment could come in the short run as well. There are a gazillion of people like this middle aged trainee in clubs, they have been playing for 5 years or more and their level reach a plateau forever. Because they dont want to change their ways, because you only go so far with intuition, because nobody told them that they should sweat until they can do the falkenberg training properly.....

I have been doing this for over 20 years, and it is weird to debate how I should coach by looking at 7 minutes of me working with one of my clients. It is weird to be coach on "How To Coach". Since you have such an opinion on this matter, you should video your lesson with your student to show me how good they are, only to have me critique their game, and I'll decide if they should actually being playing at all, have any talent to success, or if they should quit and do another sport. I can do the same thing you do

DynamicTableTennisTV it's not me against you, I'm not a coach and wont be in the near future. My judgement is not on your coaching talents but rather as you said on a short video. BTW I believe you agree the trainees technique needs improvement as you uploaded another video on his technique issues.

Brian I think your are getting offended way too much. of course This is only a short training clip so there is no way to say too much about the training but as a coach of course if your player wants to train something you should do that with him but if you see that he does not have to level for that you should talk with him and tell him that it's probably better to train something else you can clearly see that he doesn't even have anything near to a backhand loop which is not meant in a mean way.And again you should not get offended by some constructive critic I noticed that you at least in my opinion get offended if someone has an other opinion and then you are telling them for example that they need more training or to listen better

***** The reason have a private training session with World Class Player and National Coach is to get step by step details on how to implement the correct tactics as well as correcting the technical flaws. Because Table Tennis is so repetitious, a player needs to hear something over and over until they understand the most evocative moment of modifying that technique or tactic. If you want less talking, then you don't look for a coach that has my style of teaching, I won't be offended. What you can see is that I was on top of every detail of the technique and the tactics, and that is benefit of having a high level player and coach in a private session. The player can then go off on their own with a training partner, and work on improving those aspects of their game. In the next session, if they do it correctly, they won't hear a word out of me. The job is to coach, not "OVER COACH".

DynamicTableTennisTV 1, I think you got offended after i read your reply, am i right? If yes, why? Are you a quick-tempered man, Brain? 2, Do you really think you are as good as Chinese coach? Do you have chance to visit China National Team or other province team in China and take a look how their coaches teach players? 3, I do think modesty is not your suit, it seems like you are not open to advice. 4, Hope you have more and more clients in your business and better and better when you make a living.

I was not offended at all. I created this page to help people improve in table tennis. What I have done in this lesson is critique my student. It is done in the Chinese way of coaching that I have learned from my Chinese coaching. You think you are looking at a black dude, but in table tennis you are looking at a person that has been trained in the Chinese methods of training. I have found that Chinese table tennis players have the hardest time accepting that. I was developed in the US in Table Tennis, and what that means is if you get to the International Level, then it is a good chance that the Chinese method is what was used. You can't say I was wrong in my assessment of my student in any way, because I can pick up the racket and do it the correct way and win. I don't know you, so I can't say that about you, your level, or your ability to coach. I had 17 world class coaches, and not one of them will EVER say that I'm not open to advice. How do you think I got to this level? It wasn't by be rigid in my ability to learn. If I saw your KZfaq page with instructional videos, then I would be happy enough for you, but not arrogant enough to come to someone's page and critique. I have never posted on a KZfaq page in my life, because I don't feel a need to try to tell an expert what they should do. I'm here to help people become experts at this sport like me. If you don't think the Chinese coaches are harsh in their assessment of their players, then you have never had a Chinese coach that is FROM China. You need to read the Chinese translated website where the coaches do more than critique their players. That lets me know you have no experience with Chinese coaches. If you did you would have recognized my style, assessment, and attention to detail. What you responded to was just my tone, which is more animated than aggressive, because this person is a personal friend of mine, and the person that delivered my son, so there is more excitement for him to do it correctly than aggression in my voice. I don't know you. I don't know your level. I don't know if you are a good player or good coach, but you are looking at one video from 3 years ago and judging my coaching ability. And yes, I have trained in China, and I know that I'm just as good as the Province coaches there, and you don't have enough knowledge about my coaching ability by me coaching a 1500 player in this video. This page has been created to teach people how to play table tennis, and if you know a better way to teach then I would suggest that you start your own coaching page so we can see you methods, then let the world see what they have to say about what you have to offer. I said all of this to say, you should be training, not typing because I'm sure you are about 1700.
