Private Gerald Loraine was a member of Service Company and Colonel Sink's driver but on D-DAY June 6 1944, he took part in the assault on Brecourt Manor alongside members of Easy Co. His portrayal in the series was not fitting of the actual part he played in the real assault.

Thanks for correcting Pvt. Lorraine’s legacy and heroism. He was a part of a generation that will not be repeated for centuries. I will add one thing, awarding the CMH or the DSC to officers without some type of recognition for the soldiers, Marines, Airmen and sailors that served under them seems a disservice to those brave men, and women. That is, unless the officer independently did something so heroic that it deserved honoring he or she with a medal. Just my two cents. In my opinion, anyone who serves in combat is a hero.

In regards to Loraine missing the German running across the field I remembered hearing that Guarnere missed and Loraine hit his target. I was able to find this account in warfare history network. "The team then resumed firing down the trench at the Germans, three of whom leapt out and fled across the field, offering perfect targets. Winters hollered for Lorraine and Guarnere, who were standing close by. All three opened fire. Winters hit his man in the head and Lorraine caught his man with a blast from his Thompson. Guarnere, so full of adrenaline and rage, missed his target. “I never missed!” he thought angrily. “Never missed!”"

@@basher5107 well.... sorry... it is a good series it has redeeming values but i loathe hollywood for screwing with history when they simply did not need to. Not only is the overwhelming arrogance present but they do it to make a buck and promote themselves as "story tellers" and twist the truth. I have always found truth to be more fascinating and rewarding than some phoney baloney version from someone that not only was.not there but would profit from making someone elses heroic story their own version. Yeah, it really sucks how they portray Loraine as kinda a fifth wheel to the unit. In reality, he was very effective. When they were shooting the fleeing Germans while taking the first gun, Loraine is depicted as missing the guys while Guarnere takes them out. In real life it was actually the reverse. Guarnere missed the German he was shooting at, and Winters had to shoot him. All the while, the Germans that Loraine shot went right down. Later on, a German who was stunned by a grenade came out to surrender. Winters was trying to point him to leave the trench, but he had a hard time understanding. Loraine slipped on a pair of brass knuckles and belted the guy. Winters didn't care for treating prisoners that way, but it did the trick. The German suddenly understood to leave the trench to go surrender to someone else. The show depicts Joe Toye as using brass knuckles on a German, but he didn't have any during that attack.

In "A Rumor Of War", Marine Lt Philip Caputo wrote (of Vietnam) that drivers were invariably cheerful and helpful, because surly and uncooperative drivers were likely to be given rifles and sent into the line. It seems Loraine freely chose to fight in combat and accept the higher risk.

One could say that anyone who climbs into a perfectly working yet unarmoured vehicle and then allows themselves to be carried, under fire mind you, into battle then proceeds to jump out of that vehicle into enemy territory, likely during a firefight, for whatever reason that moves them, deserves not only a medal of Meritorious conduct, Gallantry, or Honour but also a well fitting and comfortable straight jacket to pin it upon. Why it takes for the shittiest situations in life to occur to bring out the very best in people is a constant source of amazement to me. Thank the Gods for all the crazy people.

Every 'good' story needs a hero and a 'villain'. This is similar to the Easy Company commander who was criticized for cowardice after allowing the attack on Foy to stall (northeast of Bastogne). The book and TV series intentionally did not mention the man had been shot in the chest. This allowed them to showcase the bravery of the replacement company commander in that fight.

@@josephcjohnson9966 Ah, ok, I thought there was a scene where Winters had to step over his body in the trench at some point. I ran through it about 10 times yesterday and couldn't see it. I remember originally that I thought it a reflective moment where Winters learned that the quick decisions he made on the battlefield would lead to men's deaths. Thanks for clearing that up. It is a little alarming to learn at this date that significant parts of the B of B story were not right and reflected badly on the individuals portrayed.

I suspect much of this portrayal stems from yet another combination of the views (read opinions) of some of the Easy Co vets, rather than actual fact, coupled with Stephen Ambrose's notoriously lazy history work that skewed portrayals, seeing such slights were numerous in BOB, thanks to the reliance on Ambrose's book. Unfortunately BOB gave him short shrift as a result.
