Join me and Kamar, the Tower Supervisor at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (KFXE) as we fly from Pompano Beach, Florida to Wilmington, North Carolina. We discuss the other side of aviation from the perspective of all the amazing controllers that keep us pilots safe!
Routing:
KPMP FEALX2 ETECK GRUBR Y299 SEELO GARIC ILM KILM
On this flight:
- Meet Kamar, a tower supervisor at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport
- Seeing the ATC picture from someone who works it.
- Why he chose Air Traffic Control over flying
- Flow control going out of Pompano and Fort Lauderdale Executive
- Why we were taken off our departure procedure
- His favorite stations to work
- Working at Fayetville Approach Control
- Originally terrified of talking on the radio
- Air traffic control fascinates me
- Beautiful views of Pompano Beach, Florida and the Hillsboro Inlet
- Climb performance of of the Textron Citation CJ3+
- Watching your airspeed on climbs and your scan
- Step climbing out of Pompano and Fort Lauderdale
- Flying with a second pilot
- Where we both learned how to fly and work the radios
- Beautiful weather on the arrival
- Lots of landmarks pointed out in the Cape Fear area
- Bald Head Island, Oak Island, Southport
- Kure Beach, Carolina Beach, Wrightsville Beach
- Fort Fisher Aquarium
- Beatiful arrival over Leland and downtown Wilmington
- Cape Fear Memorial Bridge
- Battleship USS North Carolina
- Cinespace Movie Studios

Wally, my condolences on the passing of your father. I lost my father 25 years ago and still miss him. Your landing at Wilmington was spot on. And the banter between you and Kamar regarding ATC was enjoyable. I love that you are able to spend time with your mom. You are a good son, a seasoned pilot and great editor. Wally, as my last video for 2023, you win a set of "Cast Iron Tires" for the Citation!! Since you took a controller along, I'll throw in a set of lead inner tubes!! When I was a controller I took them along every chance I could (most often guys I worked with). It's amazing when you give them the radios to work. A lot of them vaporlock because they're on the receiving rather than sending side. (In this case, you had a pilot/controller so it wasn't something new to him). The thing that I found got to most non-pilot controllers was their misunderstanding of the workload. In their eyes, they thought flying (a complex twin, for example) was like motoring down the interstate.... Happy new year, my friend... we'll catch you on the next one, next year.

@AccidentalAviator
@AccidentalAviator 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! It is a critical phase of flight, but it's also a 7,000 foot runway on a clear day with no wind. The CJ3+ doesn't have anything special to do on landing too (no reversers). I just deploy flaps ground/speedbrakes and coast down that runway. It doesn't bother me when the right seater comments after touchdown. However, I always ask anyone sitting in the right seat that there's no talking on takeoff / initial climb! What type of planes are you flying?

Thanks as always for sharing! Does Kamar get to log SIC time?
@AccidentalAviator
@AccidentalAviator 5 ай бұрын
Actually, no he can't, and I think this is one of the sillier rulings from the FAA. If he was rated in the plane or if I was a flight instructor, he would be able to. However, since neither of those are true, and I'm single pilot rated, that means he's not a required crew member and therefore he can't log the time. It's a very bizarre FAA ruling that up-and-coming pilots have to be careful with! Another way to be able to log the time is if we were a part 135 company whose ops-specs required 2 pilots. My feeling is if he's in the right seat working the radios he should be able to log that time, but unfortunately the FAA thinks differently.

Quick question here. Seeing as there's a pilot and ATC in the same aircraft which headsets do you recommend for both transmitting and receiving lol. Which one would you NOT recommend
@AccidentalAviator
@AccidentalAviator 4 ай бұрын
I've only ever used two different headsets in my planes. We have the Bose A20's in the Citation (they came with the plane) and I've been very satisfied with those. The are perfect for this plane. I had a friend that tried the Bose ProFlight Series 2 and returned them. He said they were too cumbersome to set up, and really didn't work well with the CJ3 series. We use bleed air to heat the windshield and it got pretty noisy for him, so he didn't like them. In my own personal plane (a Piper Arrow) I have LightSpeed Zulus, and am very pleased with them. Although, I've had them for almost 10 years now and the cords seem to be falling apart. I'll have to ask Kamar (the ATC dude) what he prefers and I'll get back to you! What are you currently using?

“Nose Wheel Steering” is an item on which checklist?
@AccidentalAviator
@AccidentalAviator 5 ай бұрын
It's on the Taxi checklist. Taxi item #5 on the "Full" checklist, and Taxi Item #3 on the "abbreviated" checklist, which is what I've put into the G3000. If I could attach pictures here I would! If you IM me on Instagram I can send you a picture of it! Thanks for watching and Happy New Year!
@157294
@157294 5 ай бұрын
@@AccidentalAviator The item seems superfluous. What is the “Response” to that item?
@AccidentalAviator
@AccidentalAviator 5 ай бұрын
@@157294 Agreed! I've always thought: #1 it's a weird Taxi checklist item, and #2 it's weirder that it's so far down the checklist Which is why I usually respond with "it's obviously working." The response on the checklist is simply "check."
@157294
@157294 5 ай бұрын
@@AccidentalAviator From a macro checklist philosophy standpoint, the mere existence of a “Taxi” checklist is debatable especially in a single pilot, complex airplane operation. Just wondering if “Brakes” are on the “Taxi” checklist? But we could go on and on, back and forth for days on the philosophical purpose of a checklist, the content of that checklist, when to perform that checklist and then there’s the various human factors, CRM/TEM elements of a checklist. Now the comes an ECL, and whether any of the items on that ECL are closed loop (aircraft sensed) or are all the items simply open looped. The entire subject of checklists; when, how, why, who are topics as old as aviation and varies considerably from airplane to airplane, operator to operator. Anyway, I wish you a Happy New Year sir and safe flying. B/r, 157294
@AccidentalAviator
@AccidentalAviator 5 ай бұрын
@@157294 Are you a systems engineer? I'm just basing that on your response here. I'm a computer programmer by trade (not a pilot), thus the "Accidental Aviator" play on words. This system is definitely open loop as I was the one that entered this checklist into the G3000 (using the simplified checklist which is required for single pilot ops). There are some airplanes that use G3000 that have closed loop systems where as you run your flows it's automatically checking off items on the checklist, then you just use the checklist as a backup. Also, when you get CAS warning or cautions, the appropriate checklists are pulled up immediately for you (not in this plane though). I've talked to some airline pilots that say the checklists are even run for you on the newer planes. The avionics know what the issue is and can run the checklist quicker and cleaner than you (unless it requires deducing). I've also debated the brake check... as before start you've put the parking brake on, and I always release it and hold the brakes before taxiing. But, like you said, that's for another discussion. One item that is on the taxi checklist for the CJ3+ is the rudder bias system test, and that's a good reminder in case you forgot to do it. Anyway, we're taught "flows" now in the simulators, and always come back and back it up with a checklist. I have one of my previous videos where (during my flow) I forgot to take the engines out of TO thrust and caught it with the checklist. Had I not caught that, it could have been a costly mistake. Have a great 2024!
