These are the top 3 most common questions I get asked as an instructor about getting starting learning to fly.

Here is my list of recommended things to purchase if you are just getting started flying. Regardless of where you learn to fly, it is good to have these on hand. The FAA manuals can be downloaded for free but I still prefer to have a printed copy. In addition to the FAA material, I recommend you check out the below items from Aviation Ally. Their training aids break down complex topics into easy-to-understand language, making aviation accessible to all. I have personally used all of these materials and believe they can help you.
Aviation Ally:
Private Pilot VFR Checkride Q&A amzn.to/47a7tmx
Private Pilot VFR Flashcards for Oral Checkride Preparation amzn.to/3utgHvx
So You Want to be a Private Pilot amzn.to/47ykOoq
FAA:
AIRPLANE FLYING HANDBOOK amzn.to/3WmsIfi
PILOTS HANDBOOK OF AERONAUTICAL KNOWLEDGE amzn.to/37XxsE2
FAR/AIM amzn.to/3vkXsln
PILOT LOGBOOK I recommend if just getting started: amzn.to/3zOxfxi
and also download pdf versions for free from the FAA here:

Here is an online ground school I often recommend for a home-study course:

Great video, hopefully one day I can start for my license. Got ask, what model of ray bans you have on. Love that style.

Hey thanks for watching. I've actually had these same Ray Bans for about 12 years, yes...12 years, kind of crazy. Ironically, I was just about to order them again as they are starting to show their age for sure. Heres the Amazon link that I am using to get my next ones also...let me know that you think, they have been my favorite flying glasses for a really long time. amzn.to/3sE3ZGF

I’ve been thinking about being a pilot for a while. One of my biggest hurdles is fear/ lack of confidence. Is that something you experienced? Any tips to overcome it?

Hey Josh, thanks for the question, it’s a really good one and more common than you’d think. I learned to fly while in high school and certainly lacked a natural confidence like most everyone else. Our fear or lack of confidence is usually rooted in the ‘fear of the unknown’. Once things start to become ‘known’ confidence naturally increases and your fears or concerns become less of fears and more like wisdom. The more wisdom we gain, the better decisions we make, the more we see ourself making good decisions the more confidence we gain. I think if you give it a shot and let your instructor help slowly build your skills up you’ll overcome this hurdle. I hope this helps a little!

Where would you suggest to look for the best scholarship options?
@FreedomFlight1
@FreedomFlight1 Жыл бұрын
Check out AOPA first, they have a scholarship application ending on Feb 10, it may be limited to high school students, not sure. www.aopa.org/training-and-safety/students/aopa-flight-training-scholarships? I'd also do a google search on flight scholarships. Heres a link to the FAA site that I know keeps an active list of scholarships: www.faa.gov/education/grants_and_scholarships/aviation

Is there a way to get over acrophobia?
@FreedomFlight1
@FreedomFlight1 Жыл бұрын
Hi Kris, I think you might be surprised (we all would actually) if we realized how many pilots would claim to being "afraid of heights". Having acrophobia, or being afraid of heights in some capacity actually seems to play out differently for most when in an airplane cockpit (vs being on a ladder, ski lift, etc). For me personally, I hate extension ladders! I'm not crazy about being up high in anything other than an airplane myself. After acquiring some confidence in your ability to control the situation while up high in an airplane, I think your lack-of-confidence about being up in the sky will decrease. Being strapped securely into an airplane, with the confidence to manipulate its controls is a lot different that standing out on a skydiving platform over the landing gear (for me!). If you are learning to fly, or considering it, I would recommend that you make your instructor very aware of this concern of yours. Make it clear that this is something you need help overcoming. A good CFI will find ways to build your confidence. If they are not able to...find another CFI. I believe FDR say something like this..."courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear." So be courageous, accepting that fear may still be lurking, but your learning and your accomplishment of your dreams and goals are more important. Thanks for watching. David
