Many people consider space to be the next frontier and equally an infinite horizon to explore. But the reality is that not all “space” is the same and there are strategic zones that don’t only matter up there - but down here on Earth. Lower Earth Orbit (LEO) is one of those regions - a zone filled with satellites that support life on Earth, from agriculture to climate to navigation to defense. Unfortunately, these live satellites are not alone in our space highways. LEO is getting increasingly clogged with space debris; we’re polluting our skies just like we’re polluting our land.
In this episode, we have the pleasure of speaking with all three cofounders of Privateer - Steve Wozniak, Alex Fielding, and Dr. Moriba Jah, as they explore just how much junk is up there, how this challenge is expected to progress with time due to lower launch costs, and ultimately, what infrastructure is missing in this fragile ecosystem - from tracking to global treaties to a sharing economy of satellites.
By the end of the episode, listeners should be more equipped to understand how our infrastructure in space vastly impacts life on Earth, how the preservation of this ecosystem is crucial, and how Privateer is providing the map to better understand and fix the issue.
Topics covered:
00:00 - Intro
3:31 - Why space and why now?
9:10 - The changing perception around space
13:51 - Exponential technologies and thinking different

Was such an honor to interview the entire Privateer founding team! My favorite learning from this episode: LEO is closer to Earth than San Diego is to Austin! 🤯

Haven’t even heard 60 seconds but I have to say; in a world of disinterested millennial interviewers, the host was SUCH A GOOD BALANCE of reverent, deferent, informed, insightful and engaging. THANK YOU

I love where Moriba asks where the Host is located and after she answers he exclaims "I'm closer to Low Earth Orbit than I am to you!"

If the number shown are right and considering low orbit is not much more than 100mi, everybody might be closer to space debris than to a cow.

A space elevator would be a useful tool for cleaning up debris and can now be built from current tether material if built in stages. At the center (G.E.O.) where gravity is virtually zero, multiple tethers would be used for added strength with no weight penalty. As you move out from the center, each stage would have fewer and fewer tethers to reduce the weight as you move deeper into the gravity well.

Personal red flag: be very cautious of a business plan pitch based on the existential threat that is promoted as unseen by most people and that can be solved by the gallant efforts of the company pitched.

Yes. I agree with you. The benefit of going / not going to space is unseen by 99.9% of people. This problem was created by the 0.1%, so they should be responsible. In reality, the bills get passed down.
