Here’s a pro tip for gluey mix bus compression: use the sidechain feature to bypass the kick.
Increase the sidechain frequency to around 200 Hz (in this case), so everything below it won’t trigger the threshold.
This lets you raise the threshold and achieve a smoother, gluey sound.

Hey Streaky, love the channel and the daily tips - likewise I’ve been doing this for about 30 years but I love that there’s still something new to learn every day and I’ve picked up some brilliant ideas from you so thank very much! Just one thing… please please please can you find an alternate song to use for demonstrations!? There’s nothing wrong with it and I totally see why it’s a great choice for demonstrating a whole wide range of techniques on, and the copyright issue of course …. But I’m beginning to get the itch to stop watching now when I hear “In and out of love…”! I am (probably quite unfairly) developing a dislike of it to a similar degree to that which I have for my doctors ‘on-hold’ music - which was, I believe, developed during WW2 by the Nazis as a means of ‘coercion’. My apologies to the guy whose song it is… it’s a great song the first few hundred times! 😂 and keep up the excellent work Streaky! You kick will cut through the compressor more and hit your final limiter more and than can distort.

The kick still gets compressed, the only thing you're changing is what triggers the compression, not what is compressed.

So this is what happens when you use an internal sidechain in a compressor as opposed to another (external) track input ? On most compressors or just this one?

Basically all compressors have a side chain and it's always active when the compressor's active. It's simply what dictates when and how gain will be reduced. Unless an external signal is being fed to the side chain, the signal you're compressing will be put through instead. That's more or less always how it is if the compressor's interface won't let you choose what to use as the sidechain, which is the case with most compressors. The knob in the sidechain section of this particular compressor just high pass filters the sidechain to exclude the cut off frequencies from triggering the gain reduction. But even if there was no sidechain section visible on the interface, the side chain would still be there working under the hood.

@@dodo13500 I don’t know how to explain it. Just what I hear. It’s a lower sound that blends in the mix but still has clarity. I lower the sound level but that ain’t it.

You can use an aux with an ex into a bus comp if you don't have the feature and just blend that bus in.

Not really. Compressors have a side chain which is what triggers the compression. It's typically the same signal you're compressing, just with special processing to make it smoother etc. Some compressors, such as the one in question here, let you filter the side chain, so that only certain frequencies remain there triggering the compression. In this case the lower frequencies were cut from the side chain so that they won't trigger the compressor anymore. Typically the loudest thing in the lower frequencies of a mix is the kick drum, so by cutting those frequencies out from the mix bus compressor's side chain, the kick drum will trigger it less or not at all. So in short, no signals will be blended. This just alters what triggers the compressor.

@@JiihaaS I think I'm going to disagree. Because in that case it's just reducing dynamics In the set frequency range. I know how to do it manually through an aux which is kinda the same and I'm bringing it back up on the output gain, but I was just more curious how it's done within the plugin itself. Reducing the dynamics is one thing but they gotta get brought through a make up gain or something unless it does it automatically which is what I'm wondering

@@lalocura1828 it's not reducing dynamics in the set frequency range only. That would be multiband compression. Filtering the side chain of a regular compressor just alters what triggers the compressor, but the compression will still be applied to all frequencies. In other words, the side chain filtering only changes when and how much gain reduction will happen to the whole signal, not what frequencies are being compressed. It's still just one signal with no other processing done by the compressor but simple gain reduction. No other signals to blend with. The rest of your post I'm not sure I understand. What's output / makeup gain got to do with this?

@@JiihaaS thank you that made more sense to me. I was explaining a parallel process that I would do using fab filter comp. That I thought was doing the same but it isn't.
